Integrating Peer Support Into Medicare-Funded Care: A Qualitative Study of System-Level Insights From Early Implementation.

PURPOSE: In 2024, Medicare introduced principal illness navigation peer support (PIN-PS) reimbursement codes, creating the first nationwide reimbursement mechanism specifically for peer-delivered support services under Medicare. Little is known about early implementation of these codes. This study identified barriers and facilitators to PIN-PS adoption across clinical, organizational, and policy settings. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, qualitative interviews with 20 participants representing physicians, certified peer support specialists and leaders, policy professionals, payer repres

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of women living in Australia who engaged with informal online support following stillbirth. METHOD: In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 women aged 29 to 45 years (Mage = 3

Semi-structured interviews were conducted in person, by phone, or virtually. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic

Newly diagnosed oncology patients' perceptions of 'hope to cure': a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In oncology, hope and cure are deeply linked. Hope helps patients endure treatment uncertainty, while cure remains the ultimate goal. Yet cancer diagnosis and treatment reshape how patients perceive this link as 'hope for cure'. AIMS: This study explores how newly diagnosed oncology patients perceive 'hope for cure' during treatment phases. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative research design was employed. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 13 participants, who were chosen through purposive sampling. The collected data were then examined using conventional c

Stigma experience of female infertility patients in China: A phenomenological study.

Stigma is a psychological issue prevalent among patients with infertility. We employed qualitative research methods to explore the experiences of Chinese women with infertility-related stigma in the context of their cultural environment. We selected twelve participants who underwent infertility treatment at The First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University between March and April of 2024. Data collection involved semi-structured in-depth interviews, which we analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological seven-step analysis method. We identified ten subthemes across three main themes: emo

Diagnostic Odysseys of New Daily Persistent Headache.

The term diagnostic odyssey refers to patients' difficult journeys to obtain a diagnosis, particular in the case of rare or contested illnesses. This paper describes the diagnostic odyssey of patients with New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH), a rare headache disorder notable for its persistence, resistance to treatment, and impact on quality of life. Studies conducted to date have taken a medical perspective focusing on characterizing NDPH as opposed to patient construction of the illness experience. This study fills that gap by analyzing 17 semi-structured interviews with participants with N

Effectiveness of decision aids on cancer-screening decision-making: an umbrella review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Although systematic reviews have shown how decision aids about cancer-related clinical decisions improve selection of key options and shared decision-making, whether or not particular decision aids, defined by their specific presentation formats, delivery methods and other attributes, can perform better than others in the context of cancer-screening decisions is uncertain. Therefore, we planned an overview to address this issue by using standard umbrella review methods to repurpose existing systematic reviews and their component comparative studies. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will

Decision aids for female BRCA mutation carriers: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Women who inherit a pathogenic mutation in Breast Cancer Susceptibility Genes 1 or 2 (BRCA1 or BRCA2) are at substantially higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer than the average woman. Several cancer risk management strategies exist to address this increased risk. Decisions about which risk management strategies to choose are complex, personal and multifactorial for these women. This scoping review will map evidence relevant to cancer risk management decision making in BRCA mutation carriers without a personal history of cancer. The objective is to identify and desc

Transgender Adolescents' Uses of Social Media for Social Support.

PURPOSE: Transgender adolescents are at higher risk for negative mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality, compared with cisgender adolescents. Social media may be an effective venue for addressing these health disparities because most adolescents have access to online information and socialization. This study used qualitative inquiry to explore transgender adolescents' uses of social media for social support. METHODS: Transgender adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 years with a social media profile were recruited from a pediatric gender clinic in the Midwest

Stranger support: How former prisoners with mental illnesses navigate the public landscape of reentry.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners with mental illnesses (MI) are released from prison into environments where they are under-treated and under-supported by our criminal justice, social service, and health systems. Public space and interactions within those spaces have been shown to have positive effects in similar populations, including individuals with MI. This qualitative study explored the role different interactions play during the course of reentry. The study aimed to understand the more everyday relational dynamics that former prisoners with MI experience in public and private spaces. METHODS: Semi

Pushing the frontiers of science--the Mellon reproductive biology centers.

The 20-year history of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's support for US reproductive biology centers and junior investigators is summarized. The main results of the Foundation's program during the 1990s are described under the following headings: research generated by seed money, research generated by the twinning program, and commercial partnerships. The twinning program supports research collaborations between US centers and reproductive biology centers in developing countries, and was recently reviewed by an external panel. Both the seed money and twinning mechanisms were judged to have bee
