BACKGROUND: Physical and mental well-being after critical illness may be objectified by the ability to work. We examined return to work among patients with myocardial infarction (MI) by cardiogenic shock (CS) status.
METHODS: Danish nationwide registries were used to identify patients with first-time MI by CS status between 2005 and 2015, aged 18-63 years, working before hospitalization and discharged alive. Multiple logistic regression models were used to compare groups.
RESULTS: We identified 19 799 patients with MI of whom 653 had CS (3%). The median age was similar for patients with and

Appropriate supports and accommodations are necessary to ensure full concussion recovery and return-to-work (RTW). This research investigated barriers and facilitators to concussion recovery and RTW, and resource gaps reported by adults with concussion ('workers') and workplace and healthcare professionals ('workplaces'). Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with workers (n = 31) and workplaces (n = 16) across British Columbia. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Facilitators to workers' concussion recovery and RTW included treatment, social support, and

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries and about 50% of myocardial infarctions occur in working age individuals. Return to work rates are determined by cardiovascular parameters as well as by psychosocial factors and a Cardiac Rehabilitation program after an acute coronary syndrome or coronary revascularization has shown to improve the cardiovascular outcome, occupational recovery and professional reintegration through a multidisciplinary intervention including physical exercise, lipid and blood pressure control, smoking cessation progra

Persisting post-concussive symptoms are challenging to treat and may delay return-to-work (RTW). The aims of this study were to describe a multidisciplinary and holistic vocational rehabilitation (VR) program for individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and to explore course and predictors of employment outcome during VR. The VR program was described using the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) framework. Further, a retrospective, cohort study on individuals with mTBI receiving VR was conducted based on clinical records (n = 32; 22% males; mean age 43.2 years; 1.2 years since inju

OBJECTIVE: Burn and other major injuries often impair survivors' capacity to work. We investigated predictors for not returning to work by six months after acute burn. Differences in demographic, clinical and psychiatric characteristics between burn patients returning to work and those not were examined.
METHOD: All consecutive acute burn patients (N=107) admitted to the Helsinki Burn Center were assessed with a structured psychiatric diagnostic interview at baseline. Of the 60 patients working at baseline, 53 patients (88%) participated in the six-month follow-up interview. Variables predict

BACKGROUND: The ability to understand factors associated with an increased duration of missed work postoperatively could be used to more effectively select patients with the greatest opportunity for a successful outcome. We set out to determine the effect of preoperative depression on postoperative return to work in patients undergoing transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for degenerative spondylolisthesis.
METHODS: Fifty-eight patients undergoing TLIF for symptomatic grade I degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis were included in this analysis. Patient demographics, clinical presenta

OBJECTIVE: Although the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the workforce is at the top of the policy agenda in Norway, the number of people with disabilities who return to work (RTW) is rather low. Studies have found that, in addition to disabled people's physical ability level, employers' attitudes and skills seem to be of vital importance for a positive return process. The objective of this study was therefore to examine the inclusion process from the employers' perspective, by gathering knowledge regarding the factors that employers experience as essential for positive RTW for person

Hand injuries are the main cause of work-related disability in young adults. We have devised the Modified Hand Injury Scoring System to quantify hand, wrist and forearm injuries. This study aims to determine its value in predicting ability and time taken to return to work after such injury. Prospectively-assigned MHISS at presentation was compared with demographic, injury, employment and quality of life information 40-52months after acute hand or forearm injury. MHISS score was the only variable investigated found to predict ability to return to work. Factors not associated included age at inj

For addressing, and eventually being able to predict and prevent, both disease-related complications and changes in social status in long-term acute leukemia survivors, the follow-up is the most important factor after treatment. To this end, we assessed the complications following the attainment of complete remission in adult acute leukemia patients and the changes in social status of patients surviving more than 5 years after disease onset. In our study population of 42 survivors, 24 (57.1%) suffered from various combinations of 18 types of identified complications including posttransfusion h

The purpose of this Dutch prospective population-based study was to identify prognostic factors for return-to-work of employees with 3-4 months sick leave due to low back pain (LBP). A cohort of 328 employees was formed and baseline data were collected. One year after the first day of the sick leave, 91% of the original cohort participated in a second interview (n=298). During the baseline measurement, information was collected about health status, history of LBP, occupational variables, job characteristics and social economic variables. At the second interview, 66% of the employees had return

BACKGROUND: The return to work after maternity leave is reported to be a stressful event for many mothers. Yet, little is known about their experience just before returning. This descriptive study explored mothers' evaluation of this period, their levels of anticipatory postpartum work resumption stress (APWRS), their caregiving decisions, and factors that could support them.
METHODS: Self-reported data were collected from 236 Dutch mothers of infants planning to return to work within the next month.
RESULTS: One in five mothers in our sample assigned an unsatisfactory evaluation rating (fiv
