Identifying fungal species from cultures remains a significant challenge for clinical labs in resource-limited settings. Here we evaluated the performance of the CHROMagar™ C.neoformans (X136) medium for the presumptive identification of Cryptococcus neoformans/C. gattii isolates. The color and appearance of the colonies of 53 yeast isolates, whose characteristics are well established using reference methods (genomic and proteomic methods) were analyzed. These isolates included: 36 C. neoformans/C. gattii (33 C. neoformans and 3 C. gattii), 5 non-neoformans/non-gattii Cryptococcus (4 Cutaneotr

BACKGROUND: Fungemia caused by non-Candida yeasts is rare but represents an emerging clinical problem that remains less well recognized and studied. These organisms often exhibit intrinsic resistance or reduced susceptibility to commonly used empirical antifungal agents, such as fluconazole and echinocandins. This poses significant challenges for empirical antifungal therapy.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical characteristics, antifungal treatments, and outcomes of pediatric patients with bloodstream infections due to non-Candida yeasts and to summarize the antifungal susceptibility profile

Wild and synanthropic birds harbour a diverse range of yeasts, including species of recognised clinical relevance. Given their close interaction with human activities, these birds represent a valuable source for investigating environmental yeasts and assessing the performance of identification methods. We investigated yeasts recovered from cloacal and crop samples of birds from Gran Canaria and compared routine identification methods with molecular sequencing. Twenty-four isolates were examined by biochemical profiling (API ID32C) and MALDI-TOF MS. Molecular identification based on ITS sequenc

Traditional fermented horsemeat and horsemeat sausages in Xinjiang are rich in microbial resources, mainly including lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. Although the probiotic effects of lactic acid bacteria have been widely studied, there is relatively little research on the probiotic properties of yeasts, which limits their application in functional food development. This study isolated 44 yeast strains from traditional fermented horsemeat products in Xinjiang, and 16 strains exhibiting strong tolerance to temperature, acidic pH, simulated gastrointestinal fluids, and high bile salt solution we

Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus) is widely distributed and can transmit many infectious diseases, and insecticide-based interventions play an important role in vector control. However, increased insecticide resistance has become a severe public health problem, and the clarification of its detailed mechanism is a matter of urgence. This study found that target-site resistance and metabolic resistance could not fully explain insecticide resistance in field Ae. albopictus, and there were likely other resistance mechanisms involved. The 16S and internal transcribed spacer sequencing revealed sign

Bioconversion of biosynthetic heterocyclic compounds has been utilized to produce new semisynthetic pharmaceuticals and study the metabolites of bioactive drugs used systemically. In this investigation, the biotransformation of natural heterocyclic alkaloid papaverine via filamentous fungi was explored. Molecular docking simulations, using protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase (PL) as target enzymes, were performed to investigate the antidiabetic potential of papaverine and its metabolites in silico. The metabolites were isolated from biotransformation of

Artisanal cayote jam consumption is widespread in Latin-American countries. This jam is prepared from the pulp of Cucurbita ficifolia Bouché. Here, an artisanal cayote jam recipe and a reduced-calorie artisanal cayote jam recipe were defined through sensory analysis. The defined jams showed higher overall acceptance and flavour quality compared to commercial ones. The low-calorie jam showed overall acceptance similar to the artisanal product, with no differences in the flavour quality. The cayote jams were characterised by determining physicochemical parameters and microbial flora. Artisanal j

Indoor environments may impact human health significantly since microbial diversity made of various bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms constitutes the habitat's microbiome. These microorganisms originate from diverse sources, such as the environment, humans, and pets. Understanding such microbial diversity is crucial for assessing related health impacts. The aim of this study was to investigate bacterial and fungal microorganisms from different surfaces in a set of houses on Corsica Island (southeastern France). We conducted sampling and high-throughput sequencing of PCR-amplified micro

Neurons rely on their metabolic coupling with astrocytes to combat oxidative stress. The transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) appears important for astrocyte-dependent neuroprotection from oxidative insults. Indeed, Nrf2 activators are effective in stroke, Parkinson disease, and Huntington disease models. However, key endogenous signals that initiate adaptive neuroprotective cascades in astrocytes, including activation of Nrf2-mediated gene expression, remain unclear. Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) plays an important role in cell signaling and is an attractive

The human oral microbiome is a complex, dynamic ecosystem critically involved in maintaining oral health and contributing to systemic well-being. Many bacteria and fungi are involved in oral cavities such as Penicillium, Rhodotorula, Saccharomycetales, Streptococcus, Veillonella, Neisseria, Actinomyces, and Schizophyllum. Disruption of microbial homeostasis, or dysbiosis, underpins a wide spectrum of oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal disease, endodontic infections, and mucosal conditions. Recent advances in microbiome research have elucidated the mechanisms by which pathogeni

An amplicon metagenomic approach based on the ITS2 region of fungal rDNA was used to investigate the diversity of fungi associated with mature strawberries collected from a volcanic orchard and open-air market stands. Based on the Kruskal-Wallis test, no statistically significant differences were observed in both non-phylogenetic and phylogenetic alpha diversity indices. According to beta diversity analyses, significant differences in fungal communities were found between groups (orchard vs. market). Taxonomic assignment of amplicon sequence variables (ASVs) revealed 7 phyla and 31 classes. Th
