Activity of thieves-type protective blends and their individual components (cinnamon, clove, rosemary, eucalyptus and lemon essential oils) against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius strains isolated from canine otitis externa.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a natural component of the normal microbiota of the skin and mucous membranes of dogs. However, it can also act as a causative agent of pyoderma and otitis externa. The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains of this staphylococcus has prompted the search for new antimicrobial agents. The so-called "Thieves" blend, a relatively little-known mixture of essential oils, is based on a medieval recipe and comprises the following essential oils (EOs): cinnamon, clove, rosemary, eucalyptus, and lemon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrob

Combination of rosemary extract and buffered vinegar inhibits Pseudomonas and Shewanella growth in common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

BACKGROUND: Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-production sector, and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the most cultivated fish species in the world. Due to its intrinsic characteristics, fish meat is highly susceptible to microbiological spoilage. Pseudomonas and Shewanella are the primary and secondary occurring microbiota during storage of fish meat, with significant contribution to spoilage with the formation of hydrolytic enzymes (lipases and proteases). RESULTS: With in vitro testing, we show that rosemary extract (Inolens4), buffered vinegar and their combination (SyneROX)

An overview of herbal alternatives in androgenetic alopecia.

The second most common alopecia-Androgenetic alopecia (AGA)-occurs due to hormonal imbalance. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) an androgenic hormone is a sex steroid, produced in the gonads. The target sites of DHT are similar to that of testosterone, and it attaches easily remaining bound for 53 minutes as compared to 35 minutes of testosterone. Excess of DHT causes miniaturization of hair reducing the anagen phase and increasing the telogen phase leading to hair loss. Normally up to ten percent of testosterone in the body irreversibly gets converted into DHT by the action of enzyme 5-alpha-reductas

CCl4 induces tissue-type plasminogen activator in rat brain; protective effects of oregano, rosemary or vitamin E.

The high metabolic rate and relatively low antioxidant defenses of the lipid-rich brain tissue render it highly susceptible to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, whereas the implication of ROS in the pathogenesis of several diseases in the central nervous system is well-established. The plasminogen activator (PA) system is a key modulator of extracellular proteolysis, extracellular matrix remodeling and neuronal cell signaling and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of these diseases. This study evaluates the role of tissue-type PA (t-PA) in oxidative stress and the protec

Defect-Engineered Tetragonal ZrO2 Nanoparticles for Biomaterial Interfaces: Green Synthesis, Biointerfacial Interactions, and SERS Biosensing.

Zirconia (ZrO2) is a widely used biomaterial in dental and orthopedic applications due to its excellent biocompatibility, chemical stability, and mechanical properties. However, the role of defect structure and phase composition in governing biomolecule-surface interactions at the biointerface remains insufficiently understood. In this work, we demonstrate a synthesis-driven strategy for engineering defect-rich tetragonal ZrO2 nanoparticles via conventional wet-chemical and plant-extract-mediated green routes using Laurus nobilis, Salvia rosmarinus, and Ficus benghalensis. Plant-mediated synth

Biobased chitosan films incorporating rosemary-mediated silver nanoparticles for enhanced antimicrobial activity and catalytic applications.

Chitosan (CS), a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from chitin, is widely recognized for its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, making it an attractive candidate for sustainable functional materials. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) possess remarkable antimicrobial and catalytic properties but are often produced through energy-intensive and non-ecofriendly chemical routes. In this work, we report the green synthesis of AgNPs using Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extract as both a reducing and stabilizing agent, and their subsequent incorporation into CS matrices to pr
