The impact of pension on the health behavior of elderly rural residents: evidence from China.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy behavior is an important factor threatening the health of older rural residents in China. We examine the effects of receiving pension on elderly rural residents' health behavior (namely conscious control of sugar, salt, and edible oil intake, as well as learning health or wellness knowledge), also including effect heterogeneity by income level and gender. METHODS: Using China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS) in 2020, we used the policy rule of the China's New Rural Pension Scheme that only those people who are over 60 years old can have access to pension as the natural

METHODS: Data were obtained from the baseline survey of the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS), which included over 10,000 junior high school students. This study used myopia, the most common vision problem among junior high

Ethnic Disparities in Utilization of Maternal and Child Health Services in Rural Southwest China.

BACKGROUND: Studies in China on ethnic disparities in access to health care in remote and rural population remain insufficient. METHODS: A multi-stage sampling scheme was used to randomly recruit women from 40 townships in 14 remote prefectures of extremely remote areas in Yunnan. From birth records, we identified and recruited 303 Han

Head growth of undernourished children in rural Nepal: association with demographics, health and diet.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate HC measurements in a population of rural Nepali children and relate these measurements to demographics, health and diet. METHODS: An observational study of head growth was nested within a longitudinal evaluation of a livestock-based agricultural intervention in

Visceral Leishmaniasis in Rural Areas of Alborz Province of Iran and Implication to Health Policy.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala-azar mainly affects children in endemic areas. This study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of VL using direct agglutination test (DAT) in children living in rural districts of Alborz Province located 30 km from Tehran capital city of Iran. Multi-stage cluster random sampling was applied. Blood samples were randomly collected from 1,007 children under 10 years of age in the clusters. A total of 37 (3.7%) of the studied population showed anti-Leishmania infantum antibodies with titers of ≥1:800. There was a significant association between positive

Perceptions and use of maternal health services by women in rural coastal Madang Province.

Maternal mortality remains exceptionally high in Papua New Guinea (PNG) at 733 per 100,000 live births. There has been little, if any, improvement in maternal mortality or maternity services since the 1980s. In 1992-1993 a survey of 550 women in rural coastal areas of Madang Province was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of maternal risk factors and parous women's utilization of and attitudes towards the existing health services. Women were classified as at risk on the basis of previous obstetric complications, parity, stillbirths and neonatal deaths. On this basis 67% of women were cla

Effect of health expenses on household capabilities and resource allocation in a rural commune in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Significant health expenses can force households to reduce consumption of items required for daily living and long-term well-being, depriving them of the capability to lead economically stable and healthy lives. Previous studies of out-of-pocket (OOP) and other health expenses have typically characterized them as "catastrophic" in terms of a threshold level or percentage of household income. We aim to re-conceptualize the impact of health expenses on household "flourishing" in terms of "basic capabilities." METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a 2008 survey covering 697 households,

Zoonoses: an occupational hazard for livestock workers and a public health concern for rural communities.

Farming employs one of the most diverse work forces, while at the same time it is one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S. Individuals associated with the livestock industry face an additional risk: zoonotic diseases. In an effort to improve the overall well-being of the farming community, this review addresses zoonoses as a health concern for the farming community. The discussion of agriculturally acquired zoonoses includes infections naturally transmitted from vertebrate animals to man (e.g., rabies) and those common to animals and man (e.g., Salmonella). Special consideration is gi

Differences and similarities in poisoning admissions between urban and rural health centers in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Toxicoepidemiological data from rural areas of developing countries is scarce. Most studies examine admissions to urban referral hospitals and extrapolate to lower level health facilities. The validity of this approach was examined in this work. METHODS: A retrospective review of all poisoning admissions was conducted at the provincial hospital (PH) and six district hospitals (DH) in Mashonaland Central province, Zimbabwe for the period January 1998 to December 1999 (inclusive). Patient records were traced by hand from medical ward registers. Relevant information was collected usi

Characterization of agricultural tasks performed by youth in the Keokuk County Rural Health Study.

Injury and illness among youth working on farms are important problems. The types of farm tasks performed by children and the ages at which they begin these activities have not been well characterized. This cross-sectional study characterized agricultural work performed by adolescents in a rural Iowa county to better understand the patterns and extent of exposures to agricultural risk factors. This information will help to develop prevention strategies for agriculture-related injury and illnesses for children working on farms. The Keokuk County Rural Health Study is a prospective cohort study

Causes of blindness in Northern Tanzania: a hospital and rural health centre based study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the main causes of blindness in Northern Tanzania. METHODS: Ophthalmic patients at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and on outreach clinics in the Kilimanjaro region of Northern Tanzania were examined. The cause of blindness was documented for any eye seeing less than 3/60 Snellen. If more than one factor contributed to the visual loss, the single factor deemed to be the most visually disabling was documented. RESULTS: 1045 blind eyes of 781 patients were examined. 264 patients were bilaterally blind. The main cause of bilateral blindness was cataract [39%]. Th

A health and nutritional profile of rural school children in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

A community-based cross-sectional study was undertaken to measure anthropometric indices, micronutrient status and prevalence of parasite infections in 579 rural South African primary school children. Eleven schools were selected randomly from a Magisterial District in southern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). In each school, all pupils aged between 8 and 10 years were selected. The following outcome measures were obtained: anthropometric--height for age, weight for age and body mass index; micronutrient status--anaemia, serum ferritin and vitamin A; and prevalence of parasite infections--Ascaris lumbrico

The health and nutritional status of school children in two rural communities in Sri Lanka.

There is growing evidence of considerable burden of morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases and undernutrition in school children. This study describes the nutritional status and parasitic infections of school children in two areas of rural Sri Lanka. All children in four primary schools in the Moneragala district of Sri Lanka were included in the study. The height and weight of children were measured and anthropometric indices calculated. Stool and blood samples were examined for evidence of intestinal helminthiasis, malaria and anaemia. A greater proportion of boys than girls were
