HMG-CoA reductase is regulated by salinity at the level of transcription in Haloferax volcanii.

The moderately halophilic archaeon Haloferax volcanii was surveyed for protein profile changes correlated with growth at high and low salinity. A single polypeptide with an approximate mass of 46 kDa was conspicuously more abundant during growth at high salinity. This protein was identified as HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR), encoded by the hmgR gene. HMGR is a key enzyme in the mevalonate pathway of isoprenoid biosynthesis, the sole route in haloarchaea for lipid and carotenoid production. Enzymatic assays confirmed that HMGR activity is more abundant in cells grown at high salinity. Low salt cultur

Effects of salinity manipulations on blood pressures in an osmoconforming chordate, the hagfish, Eptatretus cirrhatus.

Arterial and venous pressures were measured in hagfishes subjected to acute changes in salinity. The osmotic pressure of the seawater (SW) was increased or decreased by approximately 10%. Sixty minutes after the change in medium osmolarity the osmotic pressure of the blood corresponded with that of the medium. Following transfer to 90% SW all measured parameters changed as predicted for a passive increase in blood volume, apart from the pressure in the posterior cardinal vein (PCV) which fell. By 2 h dorsal aortic (DA) pressure and pressure in the PCV and supraintestinal vein had returned to p

Salinity Effects on Water Potential Components and Bulk Elastic Modulus of Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.

Pressure volume curves for Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. (alligator weed) grown in 0 to 400 millimolar NaCl were used to determine water potential (Psi), osmotic potential (psi(s)), turgor potential (psi(p)) and the bulk elastic modulus (epsilon) of shoots at different tissue water contents. Values of psi(s) decreased with increasing salinity and tissue Psi was always lower than rhizosphere Psi. The relationship between psi(p) and tissue water content changed because epsilon increased with salinity. As a result, salt-stressed plants had larger ranges of positive turgor but smalle

Proteomic adaptation of the hypervirulent pandemic Vibrio parahaemolyticus ST36 lineage to salinity and temperature stress.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a halophilic Gram-negative bacterium widely distributed in marine and estuarine ecosystems, and a leading cause of seafood-borne gastroenteritis worldwide. Among its genetic lineages, sequence type 36 (ST36) has emerged as a pandemic clone with remarkable environmental persistence and global dissemination. Its pathogenicity is closely associated with environmental conditions, particularly salinity and temperature, which modulate the expression of virulence factors, stress-response proteins, and metabolic pathways. In this study, we investigated the differential prote

Influence of root morphology and salinity on PFAS uptake by ten Australian wetland plant species.

Constructed Floating Wetlands (CFWs) show promise as nature-based technology for attenuating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water. However, few studies have investigated plant morphological and physiological characteristics that promote PFAS uptake. This study assessed ten wetland plant species exposed to PFAS-spiked stormwater (PFBS, PFPeA, PFHxS, PFOA, PFOS, 30 µg/L each), for 28 days, under two salinity conditions (200 and 1000 mg/L). At low salinity, all species accumulated PFAS, with variation according to species. T. triandra, P. labillardieri, and S. validus were

QTL mapping and haplotype analysis reveal candidate genes for seedling-stage salinity tolerance in rice.

INTRODUCTION: Soil salinization is a major constraint on rice production, and severe salinity levels lead to pronounced yield losses. Therefore, elucidating the genetic architecture of salinity tolerance and identifying candidate genes underlying this trait are crucial for molecular design breeding. METHODS: In this study, a population of 253 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the salt-sensitive japonica cultivar Jileng 1 (JL1) and the salt-tolerant indica cultivar Milyang 23 (MY23) was evaluated for seedling-stage salinity tolerance under 0.9% NaCl stress. RESULTS: Using multiple

The Estuary Effect: Variations in Temperature and Salinity Alter msh Promoter Activity in Vibrio cholerae.

UNLABELLED: Vibrio cholerae , the facultative pathogen underlying cholera, naturally inhabits warm aquatic estuaries. Environmental persistence is enhanced by the ability of V. cholerae to colonize host reservoirs and form multicellular biofilms, causing seasonally endemic outbreaks in many tropical regions. Most toxigenic strains utilize the type IVa mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) pilus for host reservoir colonization and biofilm formation. Temperature and salinity can alter V. cholerae biofilm formation, yet their impact on MSHA production specifically remains largely unknown. Here,

Thermal and salinity tolerance of feral and pet-traded cherry shrimp Neocaridina davidi (Bouvier, 1904).

Temperature and salinity are key abiotic factors influencing the physiology, distribution, and survival of aquatic organisms, yet their combined effects remain poorly understood, especially in landlocked freshwater decapods. We provide experimental data on the single and, for the first time, combined effects of temperature and salinity in atyid shrimps, focusing on Neocaridina davidi, an exotic and potentially invasive species widely traded in the aquarium industry. We used dynamic assays (CTmin, CTmax, and LTmax) and reaction norms to compare pet-traded and feral N. davidi populations with di

Salinity-regulated interfacial interactions of asphaltene subfractions: Mechanistic insights into petroleum emulsion stability and destabilization.

Asphaltenes are problematic petroleum components that contribute to persistent oil-water emulsions and complicate produced water treatment. However, how asphaltene subfractions with distinct interfacial activities respond to brine salinity and regulate emulsion stability remains insufficiently understood. Here, the salinity-dependent adsorption, interfacial film formation, and intermolecular interactions of interfacially active asphaltenes (IAA) and interfacially non-active asphaltenes (INAA) were investigated at different NaCl concentrations using dynamic interfacial tension measurements, int

Homoeologous exchange-associated ABA catabolism rewiring contributes to salinity tolerance in a synthetic tetraploid rice.

Altered ABA-related regulation is associated with transgressive salinity tolerance in a synthetic tetraploid rice carrying extensive post-polyploidy homoeologous exchanges. Plant polyploids often show higher environment resilience than their congeneric diploid progenitors. However, it remains unclear whether these traits arise directly from whole-genome duplication (WGD) or evolve through post-WGD changes. Here, we show that transgressive salt tolerance occurs in ca. 1.71% of an early-generation synthetic rice tetraploid from japonica-indica subspecies hybridization. Genome resequencing unrave

Long-Term Stable Cross-Linked Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Nanofiltration Membranes at Extreme pH and High Salinity.

High chemical stability is key for nanofiltration (NF) membranes used in challenging separation processes. An especially challenging stream to treat is one where high salinities and extreme pH values are combined, as extreme pH values can chemically degrade the cross-links that ensure membrane stability at high salinity. In contrast, polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) membranes based on PDADMAC (poly-(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)) and PSS (poly-(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)) exhibit excellent stability at extreme pH, but they lack stability at high salinity. This study systematically investig

Foliar application of allantoin and serotonin mitigates salinity stress in bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.).

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is a climbing species frequently employed in traditional medicine to treat a wide number of diseases. Soil salinity represents a primary abiotic constraint on plant growth, impacting nearly 50% of irrigated farmland and constantly increasing. Previous studies revealed the individual benefits of allantoin and serotonin, in mitigating abiotic stresses. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated their ability, both individually and combination, ameliorating the damaging consequences of salt stress on the development and physiological and biochemical att

Hydrogen Gas Enhances Salinity Tolerance in Tomato Seedlings by Regulating the S-Nitrosylation of MEK1.

Hydrogen gas (H2) effectively alleviates abiotic stress in horticultural plants. Protein S-nitrosylation, a key post-translational modification, serves as a critical mechanism for nitric oxide (NO) to exert its biological function under adverse conditions. However, the relationship among H2, NO and S-nitrosylation in response to salt stress remains poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate that NO participated in H2-enhanced salt tolerance in tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom). H2 triggered an increase in NO levels and S-nitrosothiol (SNO) content under salt stress, e

Gradual salinity acclimation drives continuous co-production of ectoine and microbial proteins from carbon dioxide.

Transforming carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value products remains a major challenge for next-generation biorefineries, largely due to the limited robustness and stability of current microbial systems. Among the most promising targets, ectoine and microbial proteins (MPs) stand out for their high value in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. However, low productivity and growth inhibition continue to constrain the scalability of CO2-based bioprocesses. This study presents a bioproduction strategy based on gradual salinity acclimation of a salinity-selected halophilic microbial consor

Comparative Effects of Hydropriming and NaHS-Priming on Salinity Tolerance in Brassica napus L. Seedlings.

Salinity stress significantly restricts crop productivity by impairing germination and early seedling growth through osmotic, ionic, and oxidative damage. The present study evaluated whether sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) priming confers greater protection than hydropriming in B. napus (Brassica napus L). Seeds were primed with water, 0.1 mM NaHS, or 10 mM NaHS and then germinated under saline conditions. Parameters measured included germination rate, root length, endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content, antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress markers, and membrane integrity. Salinity reduced ger

DNA methylation as a biomarker of salinity and contaminant stress in mangrove crab Ucides occidentalis.

Epigenetic modifications provide underlying mechanisms of organism responses to environmental stressors, yet their role in estuarine species that are exposed to combined natural and anthropogenic pressures remains poorly understood. Here, we quantified global 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) representing epigenetic alteration in the red mangrove crab Ucides occidentalis across 14 sites with varying salinity levels and contamination profiles in the Guayas Estuary (Ecuador). To obtain comprehensive view of crabs' environmental stressors, we measured concentrations of 10 metals and three common pesticides

Endophyte-mediated mechanisms of drought and salinity tolerance in rice: physiological, molecular, and field perspectives.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is highly susceptible to drought and salinity, two major abiotic stresses that severely constrain global productivity under climate change. Endophytic microorganisms have emerged as promising biological tools for enhancing stress tolerance; however, their mechanisms and field applicability in rice remain insufficiently integrated. This review synthesizes current advances in rice-endophyte interactions with a specific focus on mechanistic and functional outcomes. Evidence from bacterial and fungal endophytes, including Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, and Trichoderma

Sugarcane under siege: integrated physiological, molecular responses and mitigation strategies to salinity and drought stress.

Saline soil and drought are among the most devastating abiotic stresses constraining sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) production globally, with soil salinity affecting over 1,125 Mha worldwide and drought causing severe yield losses in tropical and subtropical agroecosystems. As a glycophytic C4 crop supplying ~80% of the world's sugar, sugarcane is particularly vulnerable, with threshold salinity tolerance at a mere 1.7 dS m-1 electrical conductivity (EC). This review integrates recent developments in the physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of sugarcane during stress conditions. Und
