[Basic investigation of saliva SIgA].

Saliva, which contributes to maintaining health in the oral environment, is affected by the physiological functions of the organism and their condition. Dental caries and periodontosis, both of which are oral diseases with frequent occurrence, require the presence of bacteria to occur. SIgA (secretory IgA), an immune globulin that is found in large quantities in substances secreted during salivation, has an antibacterial action. Thus, in conducting a basic investigation on the relationship between these factors, the author investigated what effect the speed of saliva secretion, a physiological

Trigger activation of the paradoxical salivatory response to atropine in the parasympathetically denervated human parotid gland.

The author describes a specific intermediate condition of the response to atropine during the 2nd stage of denervation of the human parotid gland. Of the entire cohort of 110 subjects, some 20 subjects have been observed systematically. They demonstrated an extremely intense atropine salivation that followed an additional trigger activation, namely food or acid irritation of the mouth mucosa. The initial phase of such a stimulation was characterized by a sharp, explosive increase in secretion. The following conclusions have been inferred: (1) in the 2nd stage of parasympathetic denervation of

"Practical suggestions on facial plastic surgery--how I do it". Parotid duct transfer in xerophthalmia.

Xerophthalmia, or dry eye, is an old human affliction. Among the many causes are trachoma, surgical or traumatic destruction of the lacrimal gland, and paralysis of the greater superficial petrosal nerve after Bell's palsy or from the presence or removal of an intracranial posterior fossa tumor. The technique of parotid duct transfer is a well established effective means to rehabilitate the dry eye. A method of parotid duct transfer is described.

Clinical observations from a study comparing two different treatments for bluetongue in sheep.

In September 2023, the official national reference laboratory confirmed the presence of BTV serotype 3 in The Netherlands. In the following weeks, it appeared that the infection caused very severe clinical signs in sheep, but it was challenging for the involved veterinary clinicians to select appropriate labeled drugs to treat them. The objective of this study was therefore to document the clinical presentation and survival outcomes of sheep affected by bluetongue and to evaluate the effects of a treatment protocol with and without antihistamines. From a group of 83 sheep with acute and clear

Clinically estimated signs of hyposalivation in older adult residents of long-term care.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the estimation of clinical signs of hyposalivation is applicable in recognising long-term care facility (LTCF) residents with poor oral health, and which individual characteristics are important in that respect. BACKGROUND: A common inconvenience among older adults, dry mouth, particularly hyposalivation, can cause many complications, such as greater susceptibility to root caries and oral infections, and it can lead to further deterioration of oral health. However, very little is known about the association of clinically assessed signs of hyposalivation with the o

Severe seizures in pigs naturally infected with Taenia solium in Tanzania.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) caused by Taenia solium is a serious neurological disease. In humans neurological symptoms have been thoroughly studied and documented, however, there is limited information on clinical signs in pigs infected with T. solium cysticerci. Among the scientific community, it is in fact believed that pigs with NCC rarely show neurological signs. The aim of this study was to describe clinical manifestations associated with NCC in pigs and correlate the manifestations to the number and distribution of cysticerci in brains of naturally infected pigs in Tanzania. Sixteen infecte

Field observations during the bluetongue serotype 8 epidemic in 2006. I. Detection of first outbreaks and clinical signs in sheep and cattle in Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

Starting August 2006, a major epidemic of bluetongue (BT) was identified in North-West Europe, affecting The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the North of France. It was caused by BT virus serotype 8 (BTV-8), a serotype previously unknown to the European Union (EU). In this outbreak, the virus caused clinical disease in a few individual animals within cattle herds, whereas overt clinical disease was usually restricted to sheep. Investigations in Belgium suggested that the first clinical signs of BTV-8 appeared mid July 2006 in a cattle herd, while the first suspicion of a BT-outbr

Determination of Streptococcus Mutans and Lactobacillus Counts and their Association with Resting pH of Saliva and Dental Caries in Preschool Children in Lagos.

BACKGROUND: Caries is controlled by several factors including exposure to diets rich in carbohydrates, tooth susceptibility, and the presence of some oral flora bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacilli sp. Tooth demineralisation occurs when the pH in the oral cavity is lower than the critical pH of 5.5 which occurs because of the production of acid by the acidogenic bacteria in the oral flora when they break down sugars (substrate) for energy. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the salivary Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus counts and their

Successful snakebite treatment in three juvenile African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) with polyvalent antivenom: a Namibian case report.

This article reports the first documented treatment of venomous snakebite with a polyvalent snake antivenom from the South African Institute for Medical Research in endangered African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus). Three juvenile male animals (6.5 months of age) showed clinical signs after being bitten by an unidentified venomous snake. The signs included loss of appetite, disorientation, impaired locomotion, excessive facial swelling, profuse salivation, reduced respiratory effort and an apparent depressed mental state. Intravenous treatment with isotonic Ringer lactate solution, hetastarch 6% an

[Paroxysmal sympathetic storm after diffuse axonal head injury].

The term paroxysmal sympathetic storms is used to define episodic alterations in body temperature, blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate, size of pupil, and level of consciousness coinciding with hyperhidrosis, excessive salivation and extensor posturing. All the cases were presented after severe diffuse axonal head injury. We present two young patients with diffuse axonal head injury that develop in their evolution hypertension, tachycardia and fever without evidence during the episodes of epileptiform activity and without any infectious cause with excellent answer to the treatment with

Oral pilocarpine for the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca with central corneal irregularity.

A 31-year-old female physician with bilateral myopia had unilateral myopic laser in situ keratomileusis in the right eye. The patient was overcorrected with the initial treatment and had 2 subsequent hyperopic treatments, resulting in central corneal irregularity. During the course of treatment, the patient was diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome with marked keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The patient had anisometropia, aniseikonia, and monocular diplopia and was unable to tolerate contact lenses. Oral pilocarpine (Salagen) was prescribed, which improved salivation, lacrimation, and keratoconjunctiv

Submandibular gland excision: short- and long-term complications.

During a 10-year period, 159 benign submandibular gland excisions were performed in 157 patients. 86 of the patients were available for follow-up evaluation. Both short- and long-term complications were listed. Neurapraxia to the mandibular branch of the facial nerve was frequent after the operation, but restoration of function was seen in 92.3%. Scar problems, sensation changes, reduced salivation and taste perception were noticed by the patients in several cases, but rarely caused dissatisfaction. 18.2% of the patients in the salivary stone group had residual stones in Wharton's duct after t

Adult respiratory distress syndrome from organophosphate poisoning.

A 46-year-old man after an accidental exposure to organophosphates developed florid adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A markedly suppressed level of pseudocholinesterase and red blood cell cholinesterase with profuse salivation and sweating confirmed the diagnosis of organophosphate poisoning. Within 48 hours, patient developed respiratory distress needing intubation. Despite maximum ventilatory support and positive end-expiratory pressure, hypoxia persisted, Swan Ganz (Baxter Healthcare Inc, Irvine, CA) pressures showed low pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and patient died on the

Salivary changes associated with seasickness.

Salivary composition and flow rate were measured in 13 healthy male volunteers exposed to a real seasickness situation. The flow rates of whole unstimulated and stimulated saliva were significantly reduced at sea in about 80% of the subjects. Salivary flow rate was negatively correlated with seasickness severity. These results contrast with the classic concept of increased salivation during seasickness. At sea, the potassium concentration of both unstimulated and stimulated saliva was significantly reduced, while sodium concentration was consistently elevated. The sodium and protein concentrat

Effect of diphenhydramine on organophosphorus insecticide toxicity in mice.

Male mice were treated orally with the organophosphorus insecticides fenamiphos and dichlorvos at 10 and 150 mg/kg, respectively. The insecticides produced signs of toxicosis characteristic of cholinesterase inhibition, and induced death in all treated mice. Pretreatment of mice with diphenhydramine HCl (20 and 30 mg/kg, subcutaneously) 15 min before either insecticide significantly (P less than 0.05) reduced the incidence of toxic manifestations (excessive salivation, Straub tail, and whole body tremor), delayed the onset of death, and increased the percentage of survivors. Doses of diphenhyd

A rare pitfall in the diagnosis of oesophageal atresia.

The diagnosis of oesophageal atresia (OA) is usually made soon after birth. Two diagnostic criteria are failure to pass a nasogastric (NG) tube and a chest radiograph demonstrating a curled NG tube in the upper oesophageal pouch. A 6-day-old neonate was referred to our institution with persistence of symptoms following exclusion of the diagnosis of OA on the basis of an NG tube radiologically confirmed to reach the stomach. Persistent oxygen desaturations and copious salivation led to further investigations, and a delayed diagnosis of oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula was mad

[Anaesthesia and spontaneous return of sensation following resection of the mandibular continuity with primary alloplastic materials].

Resection affecting the continuity of the mandible and the mandible nerve leads to complete anaesthesia of the lower lip and mental area, furthermore to deformity and functional disturbance like uncontrolled salivation. In our long term follow up study on multimodal neurological investigation sensibility is reported to have uncomplete regenerated spontaneously often already after one year. Complete sensory, however, could not be found; the incomplete sensory return was to be measured in individually different degrees of hypaesthesia. Furthermore the axonal qualities of the mandible nerve show

Achalasia sicca--juvenile Sjögren's syndrome with achalasia and gastric hyposecretion.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in its classical form, which includes keratoconjunctivitis sicca, xerostomia and recurrent enlargement of the salivary glands, is associated with a connective tissue disease in at least half the patients. According to the present study of three patients with SS, achalasia and gastric hyposecretion seem to be either further manifestations of SS, or separate phenomena associated with SS. The gastric hyposecretion involves both the hydrochloric acid and the total volume of the secretion, but the gastric mucosa has a normal appearance on microscopy. Because of the simultane

Salivary gland organoid transplantation as a therapeutic option for radiation-induced xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is a pathological condition characterized by decreased salivation due to salivary gland dysfunction and is frequently attributed to irreversible damage as a side effect of radiation therapy. Stem cell-derived organoid therapy has garnered attention as a promising avenue for resolving this issue. However, Matrigel, a hydrogel commonly used in organoid culture, is considered inappropriate for clinical use due to its undefined composition and immunogenicity. In this study, we aimed to develop a method for culturing collagen-based human salivary gland organoids (hSGOs) suita
