A laser capture microdissection-based transcriptome analysis on salt glands highlights salt secretion mechanism in mangrove plant Avicennia marina.

Salt glands, developed in the epidermis of salt-secreting mangrove plant Avicennia marina leaves and specialized in salt secretion, are critical for improving the survival under high saline habitats. However, the salt secretion mechanism in A. marina remains poorly understood. In this study, laser capture microdissection was employed to isolate salt glands from the upper epidermis of A. marina, followed by transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) to comparatively analyze gene expression profiles of salt glands under 0 mM NaCl and 400 mM NaCl treatments. Additionally, non-invasive micro-test technolo

The EkSLK2-EkAACT regulatory module enhances drought and salt stress resistance in Euphorbia kansui by promoting triterpene synthesis.

Drought and salt stress are critical limiting factors for plants growth, development, and geographical distribution. Currently, plants have formed a variety of regulatory mechanisms to cope with these stresses. SEUSS protein is a transcription regulator involved in responses to multiple abiotic stresses via biomolecular condensation. Nevertheless, due to complexity of the protein function and regulatory mechanism in response to drought and salt stress, the function of SEUSS protein in plants still require further exploration. In this study, a SEUSS-LIKE gene EkSLK2 was isolated from Euphorbia

Rhizobacteria-Mediated Reprogramming of Phytohormone Landscapes for Mitigating Salinity Stress in Plants.

Salinity stress is one of the major stressors that limits yield potential in field crops. Salinity-led imbalances in ionic and water potential, as well as oxidative damage, impair photosynthesis. Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) have been demonstrated to mitigate salinity-stress-induced damage through various mechanisms such as biofilm and exopolysaccharide production, modulation of plant root architecture or molecular signaling involving modulation of sodium/potassium efflux transporters. PGPRs are known to induce biosynthesis and signaling of various phytohormones in plants. PGPR

Genome-Wide Identification of CRK Family Members in Solanaceae Crops and Functional Characterization of CaCRK10 and SmCRK6 in Salt Stress Response.

Salt stress severely limits crop growth and productivity, particularly in horticultural crops. Cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases (CRKs) are important membrane-associated signaling proteins involved in plant environmental responses; however, their functions in salt stress adaptation in Solanaceae crops remain limited. In this study, a genome-wide identification and comparative analysis of the CRK gene family was performed in pepper (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). 37 CRK genes were identified in pepper. Comprehensive analyses, including phylo

Dopamine regulates nitric oxide biosynthesis, optimizes carbon utilization, and maintains potassium retention to support wheat productivity under salt stress.

Dopamine, a ubiquitously known catecholamine neurotransmitter in animals, has recently gained prominence for its role as a signaling molecule regulating plant physiological and metabolic activities. However, its potential to mitigate environmental stressors, particularly salt stress, through nitric oxide (NO)-mediated regulation of physiological changes remains largely unexplored in cereal crops such as wheat (Triticum aestivum). The present study investigates the role of dopamine seed priming in enhancing wheat salt tolerance by modulating NO biosynthesis, redox metabolism and ionic balance t

Identification of sugar transporter MrSTP20 responding to high-salt stress and hexoses induction in apple rootstock (Malus robusta Rehd).

BACKGROUND: Sugar distribution regulation, especially in the roots, is an important pathway for plants to cope with abiotic stress. Sugar transport proteins (STPs) mediate the transmembrane transport of hexoses such as glucose and fructose; however, the molecular mechanism underlying the response to salt stress remains unclear. RESULTS: Here, we identified 22 STP genes in apple (Malus domestica) using genome-wide screening. Under salt stress, 17 genes were detected in the roots of the apple rootstock Malus robusta Rehd; of them, MrSTP3, MrSTP7, MrSTP14, and MrSTP20 showed stronger positive re

The Physiological Mechanism of Exogenous Melatonin on Improving Seed Germination and the Seedling Growth of Red Clover (Trifolium pretense L.) under Salt Stress.

Salt stress can affect various physiological processes in plants, ultimately hindering their growth and development. Melatonin (MT) can effectively resist multiple abiotic stresses, improving plant stress resistance. To analyze the mechanism of exogenous MT to enhance salt tolerance in red clover, we conducted a comprehensive study to examine the influence of exogenous MT on various parameters, including seed germination indices, seedling morphological traits, and physiological and photosynthetic indicators, using four distinct red clover varieties (H1, H2, H3, and H4). This investigation was

Ultraviolet B radiation improves salt-induced responses in the facultative halophyte Chenopodium quinoa.

In natural environments, plants are continuously exposed to multiple abiotic stresses, such as high salinity and excess ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation. While responses to individual stresses are well understood, less is known about their combined impact. Here, we treated quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) seedlings with salt (0 and 200 mm NaCl) under either photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation (313 nm, 1 h/d, 1.71 W/m2) to investigate their response to combined salt and UV-B stress. While salinity had minimal effects on plant growth, it decreased stomatal co

H2S-mediated protein persulfidation regulates redox metabolic flux underlying salt-stress resilience in rice.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) functions as a gaseous signaling molecule in plant stress responses through the persulfidation of protein cysteine (Cys) residues. A comprehensive, Cys site-specific map of the plant persulfidome has been lacking, despite its importance for achieving a systems-level understanding of the biological roles of Cys persulfidation. Using a state-of-the-art N-ethylmaleimide-biotin-based proteomics strategy, we generate a dynamic map of 1,691 persulfidated Cys sites in the rice (Oryza sativa) leaf proteome. Our results reveal a global dynamic changes in protein persulfidation du

Effects of short-term salt stress on photosynthetic characteristics, physiological metabolism, and ion homeostasis in soybean seedlings.

BACKGROUND: Salt stress is a major abiotic stress limiting soybean production, with the seedling stage being the most salt-sensitive period. Elucidating the growth, photosynthetic, and physiological response mechanisms of soybean seedlings to salt stress holds significant theoretical value for breeding salt-tolerant cultivars. METHODS: In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of varying NaCl stress intensities (0-160 mmol⋅kg⁻¹) on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant physiology, and ion homeostasis using a salt-tolerant cultivar (Zh

Label-Free Proteomics Reveals the Response of Oat (Avena sativa L.) Seedling Root Respiratory Metabolism to Salt Stress.

Soil salinity is among the crucial factors influencing agricultural productivity of crops, including oat. The respiratory metabolic pathways are of great significance for plants to adapt to salt stress, but current research is limited and there are few reports on salt-tolerant crops such as oat, which is necessary to conduct in-depth research. In this study, we conducted a pot experiment to determine the effects of salt stress on oat root growth and respiratory metabolism. Three salt stress levels-control (CK), moderate, and severe-were applied to compare the salt tolerance of the salt-toleran

Integrating multitrait physiological approaches to characterize salinity tolerance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity is a major constraint to wheat production because it disrupts plant water relations, photosynthesis, oxidative balance and yield formation. Although numerous physiological traits have been investigated individually, integrative approaches for evaluating coordinated physiological responses to salinity remain limited. This study investigated whether multitrait physiological integration could contribute to the characterization of salinity tolerance in the evaluated wheat genotypes using conventional physiological analyses together with cost-benefit slope analysis and the

Identification of the NaCl-responsive metabolites in Citrus roots: A lipidomic and volatomic signature.

It is known that the first osmotic phase affects the growth rates of roots immediately upon addition of salt; thus, dissecting metabolites profiling provides an opportunity to throw light into the basis of plant tolerance by searching for altered signatures that may be associated with tolerance at this organ. This study examined the influence of salt treatment on fatty acid composition and chemical composition of the essential oil of C. aurantium roots. Results proved that, under salt treatment, an increase of double bond index and linoleic desaturation ratio was pointed out. On the other hand
