The treatment of sclerosing skin diseases [systemic sclerosis, localized scleroderma, lichen sclerosus et atrophicus, sclerodermoid graft-vs.-host disease, scleredema adultorum (Buschke), scleromyxedema and necrobiosis lipoidica] is difficult and remains a great challenge. Numerous treatments, some with potentially hazardous side effects, are currently used with only limited success. The introduction of phototherapy and photochemotherapy for sclerosing skin diseases has considerably enriched the therapeutic panel and proven useful in a number of sclerosing skin diseases especially in localized

Thirty-two toxic oil syndrome (TOS) patients were selected because they presented with scleroderma-like changes and were observed during the first 36 months of evolution of the disease. Initially, these patients presented with a noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, eosinophilia, arthralgia/arthritis, peripheral edema, and myositis. Histologic investigations showed a widespread chronic interstitial infiltrate with lymphocytic vasculitis. They subsequently developed peripheral neuropathy, joint contractures, scleroderma-like changes, Raynaud phenomenon, pulmonary hypertension, sicca syndrome, and liv

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre (LScs) is a variant of localized scleroderma. This disease typically occurs in patients in their 20s or younger individuals and predominantly occurs in the forehead area. A 26-year-old man with linear scleroderma was surgically treated at our center with Medpor (porous polyethylene) and dermal fat graft for the forehead lesion. After 26 months of postoperative follow-up, the depressed lesion that appeared scarred as well as the margins improved significantly. The surgical treatment of LScs using Medpor and dermal fat graft is an effective treatment modality

A 21-month-old infant presented with simultaneous localized scleroderma and severe cardiomyopathy with heart failure. Cardiac abnormalities and serological changes (positive rheumatoid factor assay, elevated IgM and IgG levels, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate) reverted to normal with prednisone therapy, and there was substantial, though incomplete, resolution of her skin changes during the same period. To our knowledge, this is the first patient with definite, clinically significant cardiac involvement associated with focal scleroderma. The possibility of internal organ involvement

BACKGROUND: The scleroderma is a complex autoimmune collagen disorder that can affect many organs simultaneously, as it occurs in the systemic sclerosis (SS), or only the skin, as it occurs in the localized scleroderma (LS). The neurological presentation is extremely uncommon, and even more uncommon are the symptoms of the scleroderma in the cerebellum.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 56-year-old male with cerebellar lesions mimicking a brain abscess. After surgical excision, the histopathological diagnosis deposed for an ischemic necrosis caused by a vasculopathy. All the bacteriol

We report two patients with scleroderma, 73-year-old female and 67-year-old female, who developed anti neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA) associated rapid progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN). Both patients have had a long history of scleroderma (23 and 14 years, respectively) when ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis occurred. In the first patient, scleroderma was localized in both fingers. She has been followed-up as CREST syndrome rather than systemic sclerosis. The complaints on admission were leg edema and left chest pain in the first patient, and a pyrexia and dyspnea in the secon

Scleroderma-like disorders are widely disparate conditions mimicking either systemic sclerosis or cutaneous localized scleroderma, not infrequently displaying features of both. Some are exclusively sclerotic, some scleroatrophic with prevailing sclerosis or atrophies. The recognition of scleroderma-like disorders is of practical importance because by establishing the cause of the disease, it is possible to introduce an effective therapy, as in scleredema Buschke or scleredema diabeticorum, sclerodermiform porphyria, Borrelia burgdorferi-induced sclerodermiform acrodermatitis atrophicans, scler

Sclerosing skin manifestations are more a symptom than a diagnosis and must therefore be meticulously clarified. Systemic scleroderma as a multiorgan disease must be distinguished from localized scleroderma or morphea because in addition to a different clinical picture they have a different prognosis and necessitate other therapeutic procedures. Rare sclerosing skin diseases with implications for internal medicine are eosinophilic fasciitis, Buschke's scleredema adultorum, scleromyxedema and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Linear scleroderma, also known as "en coup de sabre," is a subtype of localized scleroderma that warrants aesthetic correction because it appears on the forehead region in children.
OBJECTIVE: To report dermal fat grafting as a novel and effective surgical treatment option in linear scleroderma.
METHODS: Under local anesthesia, a dermal fat graft was successfully placed into a subcutaneous pocket that was prepared underneath the depressed scar. The donor site was closed primarily.
RESULTS: No early or late complications developed postoperatively. After 1-year follow-up, the derm

INTRODUCTION: Coexistence of lichen sclerosus and scleroderma is well demonstrated. However, clinical and histological lesions of lichen sclerosus and scleroderma, in a linear pattern, do not seem to have been reported.
CASE REPORT: We report the case in a six years old boy, of both lichen sclerosus and linear scleroderma lesion that involved his left lower limb. Immunological and inflammatory investigation was normal or negative, as well as, bone and muscles analyze of the leg. Further outcome was benign.
DISCUSSION: This new case confirms the possibility of an association, inside a same li

Morphea is a subtype of scleroderma that does not involve Raynaud's phenomenon or internal organ involvement. It is a connective tissue disease that features the excessive deposition of collagen in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, leading to a thickening of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, eventually forming a scar-like lesion. We represent a 19-year-old male Saudi patient displaying a white patch on the marginal gingiva of tooth #21 and multiple yellowish papules on the outer surface of the lip. Both teeth #21 and #22 have experienced recession and bone loss. The patient's clinical hist

Localized scleroderma and vitiligo only rarely have been reported to occur simultaneously. Here we report a case of a 21 year old man affected with both linear scleroderma of the left upper limb and homolateral segmental vitiligo of the trunk. Since the two diseases appeared during the same period, involved the same side of the body and their progression paralleled, a possible non-coincidental association between these two diseases is discussed.

Linear scleroderma is a form of localized scleroderma characterized by sclerotic lesions distributed in a linear, band-like pattern. The "en coup de sabre" subtype of linear scleroderma is more often associated with systemic morbidity, including ocular, oral, and neurological abnormalities. Here, we report one patient with typical linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (LSCS). Initially, he presented with refractory partial seizures before the characteristic skins lesion on his head developed. This was a rare case with obvious brain parenchyma involvement. We did not prescribe medication but pe

Scleroderma is characterized by fibrotic changes of the skin and organ systems. The disease presents in a variety of forms, ranging from the most aggressive progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), to the three less aggressive, CREST syndrome, morphea, and the more localized form, linear scleroderma. The oral manifestations of the disease result from deposits of collagen in the tissues or as a result of collagen deposition around nerves and vessels. All oral tissues are affected. In scleroderma patients, the oral manifestation most commonly recognized is wide periodontal ligament spaces. Limited

Fiftyone patients with a diagnosis of erythema chronicum migrans (ECM), lymphadenosis cutis benigna (LABC), systemic progressive sclerosis, localized scleroderma and lichen sclerosus et atrophicans were investigated in order to obtain serological evaluation of Borrelia burgdorferi circulating antibodies. In addition sera from 9 patients with pellagroid erythema, prurigo and panniculitis were performed: in these dermatoses there was no evidence of a possible borrelia relationship. Indirect immunofluorescence assay was used for serologic testing. Elevated IgG antibody titers were detected in one

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Treatment of scleroderma in children is challenging since little is known about its pathogenesis. Herein, we review the most recent evidence regarding the treatment of juvenile scleroderma.
RECENT FINDINGS: According to the recent recommendations for Pediatric Rheumatology in Europe (SHARE), systemic treatment in localized scleroderma is needed when there is a risk for disability, such as in generalized or pansclerotic morphea and progressive linear scleroderma. In juvenile systemic sclerosis, the introduction of the severity score, J4S, has standardized the assessment of t

Systemic sclerosis or clinical patterns indistinguishable from systemic sclerosis have previously been demonstrated in workers in the polyvinylchloride industry and in mine-workers exposed to silica dust. In recent years, an increasing number of cases of systemic sclerosis, localized scleroderma, and scleroderma-like disease have been diagnosed in women after implantation of silicone gel prosthesis either following operations for breast cancer or cosmetic augmentation mammoplasty. We present two cases of systemic sclerosis or scleroderma-like disease appearing after silicone implants. Together

Scleroderma is an autoimmune, rheumatoid factor-positive disease that may be localized or systemic, affecting the skin, lungs, kidneys, and cardiovascular system. Dental effects include xerostomia, microstomia, idiopathic resorption of tooth and bone, oral effects of medications, erosion and decay caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and poor oral hygiene due to physical and emotional effects of the disease. All dentists have the knowledge and ability to treat those suffering with scleroderma.
