A Review of Questionnaire Measures for Assessing the Social Climate in Prisons and Forensic Psychiatric Hospitals.

Significant time and resources are devoted to the monitoring of social climate in secure settings. However, if these efforts are to help (rather than hinder) attempts to improve the functioning of such units, the monitoring of social climate must be based on sound psychometric methods. The aim of this review was to determine what questionnaires exist to measure the social climate in secure settings and what evidence exists regarding their psychometric properties. Twelve questionnaire-based measures of social climate were identified. The Essen Climate Evaluation Schema has received the most con

Executive Functions and Behavior Problems in Children Exposed to Child Sexual Abuse: The Moderating Role of Attachment Security.

While executive functions are known predictors of behavior problems in normative samples, they remain understudied among sexually abused children. Little is known about potential moderators, such as attachment security, which may influence the association between executive functions and behavior problems. This study explored attachment security as a moderator in the association between executive functions and behavior problems in school-aged, sexually abused children in Quebec, Canada. The sample included 212 children aged six to twelve. Teachers completed questionnaires on behavior problems,

Is working from home changing the meaning of work?

Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home (WFH) has become a common practice in the workplace. This raises the question of whether WFH changes the non-monetary benefits of work, such as job quality or social contacts. Thus, in this article, we investigate how working from home affects Jahoda's latent functions of employment as well as job quality measures. To this end, we use panel data from the German Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security (PASS) and estimate the effects of changing work patterns on the aforementioned outcomes. Our findings reveal basically no effects o

Active-shooter events in the workplace: Findings and policy implications.

Employees and citizens generally view places of business as inherently safe. Business leaders sometimes make hasty security decisions in hopes of protecting their employees and customers. Leadership should have empirical data to aid in the decision-making process. This paper provides an exhaustive breakdown of active-shooter events in the workplace. The data are disaggregated by business function (eg retail, factory/warehouse, and office space) and include information on the shooter, the event itself, and how the event was resolved. The analyses are followed up by an in-depth discussion of pot

[Treating patients on the court-ordered therapy programme].

Psychologists and a psychiatrist testify to the clinical condition of people sentenced to socio-judicial supervision with court-ordered therapy. Despite the extension of the indication of the programme, this complex supervision often concerns the perpetrators of intra and/or extra familial sexual abuse. Preventing reoffending through the global treatment of the patient is a major concern both for the doctor-coordinators as well as the doctor and psychologists delivering the therapy.

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication - Afghanistan and Pakistan, 2009.

Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nigeria are the four remaining countries where indigenous wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission has never been interrupted. This report updates previous reports and describes polio eradication activities in Afghanistan and Pakistan during January-December 2009 and proposed activities in 2010 to address challenges. During 2009, both countries continued to conduct coordinated supplemental immunization activities (SIAs) and used multiple strategies to reach previously unreached children. These strategies included 1) use of short interval additional dose (SIAD) SIAs

The impact of including passive benefits in cost-effectiveness analysis: the case of automated external defibrillators on commercial aircraft.

OBJECTIVE: Traditional cost-utility analysis assumes that all benefits from health-related interventions are captured by the quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained by the few individuals whose outcome is improved by the intervention. However, it is possible that many individuals who do not directly benefit from an intervention receive utility, and therefore QALYs, because of the passive benefit (aka sense of security) provided by the existence of the intervention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact that varying quantities of passive benefit have on the cost-effectivenes

Cluster-randomized controlled trial of a mobile produce market designed to address diet and food insecurity in underserved communities.

BACKGROUND: Veggie Van (VV) is a multi-level mobile produce market intervention that increased fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption in lower-income communities in an efficacy study. The aim of this study was to understand the impact of the VV intervention delivered by multiple community partners on food security and diet-related behaviors. METHODS: This cluster-randomized trial was conducted in partnership with nine organizations (e.g., food focused non-profits) across four states in the United States. Partner organizations selected 33 community sites that reached individuals with lower-incom

National public health response to an outbreak of toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae among asylum seekers in England, 2022: a descriptive epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: In July, 2022, an increase in diphtheria cases caused by toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C diphtheriae) was reported among asylum seekers arriving by small boats to England. Rising case numbers presented challenges for case and contact management in initial reception centres, prompting changes to national guidance and implementation of population-based control measures. This study aimed to describe the outbreak of toxigenic C diphtheriae among asylum seekers arriving by small boats to England during 2022 by use of national surveillance data. METHODS: We undertook a descript

Updated Core Competencies for Disaster Medicine and Public Health.

IMPORTANCE: In 2012, the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH) created a set of core competencies for disaster medicine and public health through an expert stakeholder panel. The COVID-19 pandemic and other significant events have reshaped experts' understanding of which core competencies should be prioritized to ensure that health professionals are prepared for disasters and public health emergencies. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the original core competencies should be updated given the many advancements in the field over the last decade. DESIGN, SETTING, AND

Optimization of infectious disease intervention measures using reinforcement learning with UK COVID-19 epidemic data.

Globally, the outbreaks of infectious diseases have exerted an extremely profound and severe influence on health security and the economy. During the critical phases of epidemics, devising effective intervention measures poses a significant challenge to both the academic and practical arenas. There is numerous research based on reinforcement learning to optimize intervention measures of infectious diseases. Nevertheless, most of these efforts have been confined within the differential equation based on infectious disease models. Although a limited number of studies have incorporated reinforcem

Comparison of Tensile Properties and Knot Security of Surgical Sutures: An In Vitro Mechanical Study.

PURPOSE: Studies on the mechanical properties and knot security of smaller sutures used in oral and maxillofacial surgery are limited. The objective of this study is to measure the tensile properties and knot security depending on the suture materials, knotting techniques, and number of throws using 5-0 sized sutures. METHODS: Seven 5-0 sized sutures were measured in both straight-pull and knot-pull according to the procedures outlined by the United States Pharmacopeia. Regarding knot security, there were 3 predictor variables: suture material, knot technique, and number of throws. Two surgic

Psychedelics and Mental Health: An Alternative Strategy to Treat Mental Impairments Triggered or Aggravated by COVID-19.

Despite the discovery of vaccines for COVID-19, one of the best security measures to contain the spread of the virus is social distancing and isolation. However, isolation might trigger negative mental outcomes, such as onset of a depressive and anxious condition, increased consumption of alcohol and drugs, relapse to substances of abuse, and even induce post-traumatic stress disorder. Interestingly, recent research with psychedelics suggests that when these substances are used in combination with psychotherapy, they may reduce these mental impairments. Nevertheless, scientists are still worki

An accidental decapitation resulting from head protruding out of bus.

Decapitation is the separation of the head from the neck. Accidental decapitation is rare, and very few cases are cited in the literature. In this case, the victim was asleep during an overnight trip with her head sticking out of the window, and she was decapitated by a truck travelling in the opposite direction. Lack of security grilles on windows, high-speed driving, narrow roads and night travel were contributing factors. This case is presented for its rarity and pattern of injuries during the fatal mishap and to consider possible preventive measures.

Cybersecurity of Large Language Models Across the Deployment Life Cycle in Health Systems.

In this Viewpoint, we highlight the principal cybersecurity measures that should be implemented to facilitate safe and effective integration of large language models (LLMs) into health care and propose a conceptual, life cycle-based framework synthesizing evidence from security and clinical informatics literature. While LLMs offer significant potential for applications in clinical documentation, triage, and medical education, their deployment creates novel vulnerabilities that can compromise patient safety and data confidentiality. We argue that these vulnerabilities must be addressed across t

Organic Crystals with Methyl Lock Effect for High-Efficiency X-Ray Scintillation and Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting.

Organic crystal scintillators that convert X-rays to visible photons have broad application prospects in medical radiography and security screening as sustainable materials. Although molecules with high photoluminescence properties under UV excitation are usually transplanted as scintillators for X-ray detection, the development of scintillant materials is still far behind that of photoluminescent counterparts. Here, a hypothesis is proposed that chemical bond inversion induced by high-energy radiation is a key factor responsible for the suppression of scintillation in organic materials. A "me
