A Multimodal Adaptive Wireless Control Interface for People With Upper-Body Disabilities.

This paper describes a multimodal body-machine interface (BoMI) to help individuals with upper-limb disabilities using advanced assistive technologies, such as robotic arms. The proposed system uses a wearable and wireless body sensor network (WBSN) supporting up to six sensor nodes to measure the natural upper-body gesture of the users and translate it into control commands. Natural gesture of the head and upper-body parts, as well as muscular activity, are measured using inertial measurement units (IMUs) and surface electromyography (sEMG) using custom-designed multimodal wireless sensor nod

Robotic learning from demonstration of therapist's time-varying assistance to a patient in trajectory-following tasks.

The number of people with physical disabilities and impaired motion control is increasing. Consequently, there is a growing demand for intelligent assistive robotic systems to cooperate with people with disability and help them carry out different tasks. To this end, our group has pioneered the use of robot learning from demonstration (RLfD) techniques, which eliminate the need for task-specific robot programming, in robotic rehabilitation and assistive technologies settings. First, in the demonstration phase, the therapist (or in general, a helper) provides an intervention (typically assistan

Metabolic and kinematic parameters during walking with poles in Parkinson's disease.

In healthy people, energy expenditure is generally higher during walking with poles (WP) than during conventional walking (W). In persons with Parkinson's disease (PD), walking is slower and may be associated with greater energy consumption, stride-to-stride variability, and difficulty in regulating stride length. The aim of this study was to determine whether treadmill WP at three different speeds could induce changes in gait kinematics and oxygen consumption in PD patients. The study sample was 20 patients with mild-to-moderate PD and 20 age-matched healthy controls. Subjects underwent 5-min

"It Gives Me My Freedom": Technology and Responding to Bodily Limitations in Motor Neuron Disease.

People living with motor neuron disease (MND) experience profound and rapidly progressing impairment. In order to maintain their physical and social functioning, people so affected employ a range of technologies and technological aids (body auxiliaries) to enhance their life and maintain well-being. Using a phenomenological study design, we explored the experiences of 42 men and women who had been diagnosed with MND. Although many participants initially resisted the adoption of aids (often-electronic devices that enabled continued participation in daily life) or tools (the instruments that all

Overview and Categorization of Robots Supporting Independent Living of Elderly People: What Activities Do They Support and How Far Have They Developed.

Over the past decades, many robots for the elderly have been developed, supporting different activities of elderly people. A systematic review in four scientific literature databases and a search in article references and European projects was performed in order to create an overview of robots supporting independent living of elderly people. The robots found were categorized based on their development stage, the activity domains they claim to support, and the type of support provided (i.e., physical, non-physical, and/or non-specified). In total, 107 robots for the elderly were identified. Six

Promoting safe use of equipment for neurogenic bowel management.

Nurses have a responsibility to monitor patient safety related to the use of equipment. Existing bowel care/shower chairs used by persons with neurogenic bowel can pose serious safety risks for patients. Twenty-four percent of persons with spinal cord dysfunction reported development of pressure ulcers and cuts from the seats, and 35% reported a history of falls from bowel care/shower chairs. Of those who reported injuries due to falls, more than 23% reported that they were hospitalized from 1 month to 4 years due to injuries from the fall. Many of the pressure ulcers and falls that occur from

Adoption and usability of a braille communication assistive device (CAD) for face-to-face and remote communication in two users with deafblindness.

PURPOSE: There are currently no best practice training methods with communication assistive devices (CAD) for individuals with deafblindness using a braille display notetaker connected to an iPhone. Therefore, to capture adoption and usability of braille CAD in clinic, the Technology development and evaluation model of Schulz et al. (2015) was applied. Objectives were 1-to measure the level of difficulty in life habits involving communication before, during and after training with a braille CAD, 2-to document the feasibility of training for face-to-face and remote communication, 3-to simulate

Assistive technologies, including orthotic devices, for the management of contractures in adults after a stroke.

BACKGROUND: Contractures (reduced range of motion and increased stiffness of a joint) are a frequent complication of stroke. Contractures can interfere with function and cause cosmetic and hygiene problems. Preventing and managing contractures might improve rehabilitation and recovery after stroke. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of assistive technologies for the management of contractures in adults after a stroke. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, five other databases, and three trials registers in May 2022. We also searched for reference lists of relevant studies, con

Modification of a Ventricular Assistance Device for a Hemiplegic Left Ventricular Assist Device Patient.

Neurologic events occur in up to 18% of patients with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The current form of the LVAD equipment is not suited to serve patients who are impaired by a stroke. By creating an assistance device for the LVAD equipment, we have been able to greatly improve the quality of life and self-dependence of a hemiplegic LVAD patient.

Exoskeletal meal assistance system (EMAS II) for progressive muscle dystrophy patient.

This paper introduces a 4-DOFs exoskeletal meal assistance system (EMAS II) for progressive muscle dystrophy patient. It is generally better for the patient to use his/her hands by himself in daily life because active works maintain level of residual functions, health and initiative of him/her. The EMAS II that has a new joystick-type user interface device and three-DOFs on a shoulder part is enhanced for an easier operation and more comfortable support on eating, as the succeeding model of the previous system that has two-DOFs on a shoulder. In order to control the 4-DOFs system by the simple

Assistive devices, orthotics, and prosthetics.

Deciding on which supportive device, orthotic, or prosthetic is best suited for a given patient is a complex process involving many different factors. The ability to manage biomechanical abnormalities successfully may be enhanced by an understanding of the properties of the various materials that comprise these devices, their effect on functional performance, and other associated patient factors. Veterinary health care providers are faced with the challenge of effectively addressing the physiologic and fiscal needs of the patient in a rapidly changing patient care environment.

Evaluating self-assistance during functional reach with a passive hydrostatic exoskeleton under artificial impairment.

BACKGROUND: Practicing functional upper-extremity tasks with manual self-assistance may promote motor recovery and restore voluntary control to an impaired limb, reducing reliance on external aid. However, most evidence comes from studies involving tasks with limited coordinative demands. In a functional task like reaching for and lifting an object, learning to generate coordinated assistive forces with an external device may pose bilateral sensorimotor challenges that limit motor learning in the impaired limb. To address this question, we developed a passive hydrostatic exoskeleton (hEXO) tha

Symbolic keyboard for computer aided instruction of deaf children.

We describe a computer-based method for the special education of deaf children in their stage of expanding an initial vocabulary; the method uses a symbolic keyboard to facilitate real-time communication between the deaf child and the machine. The lack of auditory feedback is partially compensated by using visual and proprioceptive sensorial modalities as alternative representations of words and concepts. To illustrate the use of the computer with display and symbolic keyboard we comment on a program for the teaching of spatial relationships. The same method is used in teaching the structure o
