Theological presuppositions of the evolutionary epic: From Robert Chambers to E. O. Wilson.

We can trace the "evolutionary epic" (named by E. O. Wilson, 1978) back to earlier writers, beginning with Robert Chambers (1844). Its basic elements are: fixation on seeing human history as rooted in biology; an aspiration toward telling the whole history of humankind (in its essential features); and insistence on the overall coherence of the projected narrative. The claim to coherence depends on assuming either that the universe possesses an "embedded rationality," or that it is guided by divine purpose. This article proposes the term "idealism" to refer to these two assumptions taken togeth

From information to existence: the Information-Meaning-Existence (IBE) framework as a meta-method for second-order observation.

Sociological systems theory offers a rich vocabulary for meaning, observation, and communication, but that vocabulary has proven difficult to translate into executable, testable, and revisable procedures. This gap has become more consequential as large language models are increasingly used to read, summarize, and simulate social-scientific discourse without any shared standard for distinguishing genuine semantic stabilization from fluent but ungrounded continuation. This paper introduces the Information-Meaning-Existence (IBE) framework, which reconstructs Luhmannian second-order observation a

Electrical feedthrough governs symmetry of phononic frequency combs in MEMS resonators.

Understanding parasitic electrical feedthrough in microelectromechanical (MEMS) resonators is essential for controlling nonlinear spectral phenomena. Here, we demonstrate that electrical feedthrough fundamentally governs the symmetry of phononic frequency combs in a capacitively transduced MEMS resonator. Rather than acting as a mere measurement artifact, feedthrough forms a coherent electromechanical feedback pathway through direct AC coupling between drive and sense ports. This additional electrical channel modifies the effective electrostatic stiffness and damping, reshapes the intrinsic Du

Dynamical freezing for magnetometry in an interacting spin ensemble.

Understanding and controlling non-equilibrium dynamics in quantum many-body systems is a fundamental challenge in modern physics1-5, with profound implications for advancing quantum technologies. Typically, periodically driven systems in the absence of conservation laws thermalize to a featureless 'infinite-temperature' state, erasing all memory of their initial conditions6-8. However, this pattern can break down through mechanisms such as integrability9, many-body localization2,3,10,11, quantum many-body scars4 and Hilbert space fragmentation12,13. Here we report the experimental observation

Three distinct patterns of mental health response following accidents in mountain sports: a follow-up study of individuals treated at a tertiary trauma center.

The restorative effect of physical activity in alpine environments on mental and physical health is well recognized. However, a risk of accidents and post-accident mental health problems is inherent to every sport. We aimed to characterize mental health in individuals following mountain sport accidents requiring professional medical management. Adult victims of mountain sport accidents treated at the hospital of the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) between 2018 and 2020 completed a cross-sectional survey at least 6 months following the admission (median 44 months, n = 307). Symptoms o

Psychosocial Characteristics of Patients Evaluated for Kidney, Liver, or Heart Transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial parameters play a pivotal role in organ recipient evaluation before wait-listing for transplantation because of their impact on organ and patient outcome. Patients in need of heart (HTx), liver (LTx), or kidney transplantation (KTx) face distinct physical and psychological challenges. This study compares the psychosocial characteristics and preferences for additional therapy for patients undergoing assessment for these three types of organ transplantation to optimize patient-tailored psychological, social, and other supportive interventions. METHODS: We conducted a cro

Successful Aging Among Older U.S. Military Veterans: National Trends, Correlates, and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary, nationally representative data on the prevalence and correlates of successful aging among older U.S. veterans are limited. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 1,944 veterans aged ≥60 years (mean = 74.1) who participated in the 2025-2026 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study. Successful aging was assessed using a composite measure that integrated self-ratings of successful aging with multidimensional indicators of well-being. Multivariable logistic regression and relative weights analyses were conducted to identify key correlates of this measure of successful

Integrated bionic LiDAR for adaptive 4D machine vision.

The human eye achieves high resolution and energy efficiency through adaptive focusing on pertinent details. This natural capability sets a benchmark that current machine vision systems struggle to emulate due to rigid parallel-sensing mechanisms. Efforts to achieve retinal-level resolution through brute-force scaling of channels can lead to prohibitive cost, complexity, and power consumption. Here, we address this bottleneck with a retina-inspired chip-scale LiDAR architecture featuring dynamic gazing capability. By synergizing an agile external cavity laser with reconfigurable electro-optic

Optimising Health Literacy and Access (Ophelia) in Florence, Italy: a cluster analysis to guide cardiovascular prevention among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women in a vulnerable urban setting.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular risk increases markedly in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women and social disadvantage can intensify barriers to prevention. In these settings, limited health literacy may further restrict women's ability to understand cardiovascular risk, access appropriate services and translate advice into daily behaviours-potentially widening inequalities. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated health literacy profiles among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women living in a socioeconomically vulnerable urban area of Florence, Italy, and examined how these profiles may guide l

The development of narrative identity in the psychodynamic treatment of avoidant personality disorder: A case study.

Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is characterized by feelings of shyness, inadequacy, and restraint in intimate relationships and has been associated with a disturbance in narrative identity, which is the internalized and evolving story of past, present, and future experiences. Study findings have indicated that an improvement in overall mental health through psychotherapy may increase narrative identity. However, there is a lack of studies incorporating not only the examination of narrative identity development before and after psychotherapy but also within psychotherapy sessions. This ca

Quantum sensing for precision agriculture and environmental monitoring: opportunities and challenges.

Rapid climatic fluctuations and increasing global resource pressures are driving the need for high-precision, real-time monitoring of agro-environmental systems. Precision agriculture formulates this requirement as a complex measurement problem, where various physical, chemical, and biological parameters have to be detected with high sensitivity and selectivity. Addressing these critical aspects, this review examines quantum sensing and quantum-material-assisted sensing as an emerging framework that utilizes quantum phenomena, such as coherence, confinement, and correlated optical interactions

[The anosognostic psychosyndrome. Studies and reflections on a case of acoustic agnosia].

We analyse structure and dynamics of anosognostic behavior by means of a case with auditory agnosia for both linguistic and non-linguistic material. First we investigate on the observational level the structural interweaving of conditions. Second we make an attempt of a structural dynamic analysis with inclusion of both neurophysiological and psychodynamic aspects within a frame which is orientated towards system theories. By doing this, the anosognostic syndrome which is describable in a phenomenalistic sense as a disturbance of body-scheme, neuropsychologically as a neglect-or extinction-syn

Quantum Interference Supernodes, Thermoelectric Enhancement, and the Role of Dephasing.

Quantum interference can strongly enhance thermoelectric response, with higher-order "supernodes" predicted to yield scalable gains in thermopower and efficiency. A central question, however, is whether such features are intrinsically more fragile to dephasing. Using Büttiker voltage-temperature probes, we establish an order-selection rule: the effective near-node order is set by the lowest among coherent and probe-assisted channels. Supernodes are therefore fragile in an absolute sense because their transmission is parametrically suppressed with order. However, once an incoherent floor domina

The neuropsychology of starvation: set-shifting and central coherence in a fasted nonclinical sample.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research suggests certain neuropsychological deficits occur in anorexia nervosa (AN). The role of starvation in these deficits remains unclear. Studies of individuals without AN can elucidate our understanding of the effect of short-term starvation on neuropsychological performance. METHODS: Using a within-subjects repeated measures design, 60 healthy female participants were tested once after fasting for 18 hours, and once when satiated. Measures included two tasks to measure central coherence and a set-shifting task. RESULTS: Fasting exacerbated set-shifting difficulties
