A cross-cultural study of cognitive development.

This Monograph summarizes a comparative study of recall memory among children from two Guatemalan towns and one American city. The age interval of greatest improvement in serial recall of pictures, words and orientations of dolls varied across settings by as much as 4-6 years, but performance improved with age in all communities. It was suggested that the activation of varied strategies to aid recall memory emerged in all children during the preadolescent years, but environmental factors, as yet unspecified, determined both the slope of the growth function and its asymptotic level.

Transcranial direct current stimulation enhances retention of a second (but not first) order conditional visuo-motor sequence.

This study examined the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus in the implicit learning and retention of a 'simple' first order conditional (FOC) sequence and a relatively 'complex' second order conditional (SOC) sequence, using anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS). Groups of healthy adults received either a-tDCS (n = 18) over the left inferior frontal gyrus or sham/placebo (n = 18) stimulation. On separate days, participants completed a serial reaction time (SRT) task whilst receiving stimulation. On one of the days, participants were presented with a FOC sequence and in a

Development of a novel rodent rapid serial visual presentation task reveals dissociable effects of stimulant versus nonstimulant treatments on attentional processes.

The rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task and continuous performance tasks (CPT) are used to assess attentional impairments in patients with psychiatric and neurological conditions. This study developed a novel touchscreen task for rats based on the structure of a human RSVP task and used pharmacological manipulations to investigate their effects on different performance measures. Normal animals were trained to respond to a target image and withhold responding to distractor images presented within a continuous sequence. In a second version of the task, a false-alarm image was included,

Conditioning learning in an attentional task relates to age and ventricular expansion in a nonhuman primate (Microcebus murinus).

The grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) is a promising nonhuman primate model for brain ageing and neurodegenerative diseases. Age-related cognitive decline in this model is well described, however, data on possible relations between attention and age, as they are known from humans, are missing. We tested 10 mouse lemurs in a touchscreen-based version of the 5-choice-serial-reaction-time-task (5CSRTT) on visuo-spatial attention: subjects had to interact with a briefly presented stimulus occurring unpredictably in one out of five locations on the touchscreen. Animals were trained to an 80 % p

Differential recruitment of the sensorimotor putamen and frontoparietal cortex during motor chunking in humans.

Motor chunking facilitates movement production by combining motor elements into integrated units of behavior. Previous research suggests that chunking involves two processes: concatenation, aimed at the formation of motor-motor associations between elements or sets of elements, and segmentation, aimed at the parsing of multiple contiguous elements into shorter action sets. We used fMRI to measure the trial-wise recruitment of brain regions associated with these chunking processes as healthy subjects performed a cued-sequence production task. A dynamic network analysis identified chunking struc

Acute effects of motor learning models on technical efficiency in strength-coordination exercises: a comparative analysis of Olympic snatch biomechanics in beginners.

Despite the development of various motor learning models over many decades, the question of which model is most effective under which conditions to optimize the acquisition of skills remains a heated and recurring debate. This is particularly important in connection with learning sports movements with a high strength component. This study aims to examine the acute effects of various motor learning models on technical efficiency and force production during the Olympic snatch movement. In a within-subject design, sixteen highly active male participants (mean age: 23.13 ± 2.09 years), who were ab

Prediction of recovery grade in Bell's palsy using machine learning models.

While most cases of Bell's palsy resolve successfully, some patients do not fully recover despite medical treatment. Various tools have been developed to assess the status of facial nerve palsy (FNP), enhance prognostic accuracy, and guide early rehabilitation or more intensive therapies. However, existing evaluation tools often struggle with accurately predicting moderate cases of FNP. Recently, machine learning algorithms have shown promise in predicting clinical outcomes across various diseases by analyzing historical medical data. This study aimed to establish machine learning models for p

Intact motor sequence learning but altered error-related brain activation in writer's cramp.

Writer's cramp (WC) is a task-specific arm dystonia with involuntary contractions during writing. While motor circuit dysfunction is well-characterized in WC, the roles of motor learning and error processing remain unclear. We investigated implicit motor sequence learning in WC patients using fMRI during Serial Reaction Time Task (SRTT), focusing on cerebellar activity and error-related processing. 25 WC patients and 17 healthy controls were compared. Both groups showed a comparable sequence-specific advantage with faster reaction times and lower error rates in sequence versus random blocks. W

Deep neural networks allow expert-level brain meningioma segmentation and present potential for improvement of clinical practice.

Accurate brain meningioma segmentation and volumetric assessment are critical for serial patient follow-up, surgical planning and monitoring response to treatment. Current gold standard of manual labeling is a time-consuming process, subject to inter-user variability. Fully-automated algorithms for meningioma segmentation have the potential to bring volumetric analysis into clinical and research workflows by increasing accuracy and efficiency, reducing inter-user variability and saving time. Previous research has focused solely on segmentation tasks without assessment of impact and usability o

A new superfluity deep learning model for detecting knee osteoporosis and osteopenia in X-ray images.

This study proposes a new deep-learning approach incorporating a superfluity mechanism to categorize knee X-ray images into osteoporosis, osteopenia, and normal classes. The superfluity mechanism suggests the use of two distinct types of blocks. The rationale is that, unlike a conventional serially stacked layer, the superfluity concept involves concatenating multiple layers, enabling features to flow into two branches rather than a single branch. Two knee datasets have been utilized for training, validating, and testing the proposed model. We use transfer learning with two pre-trained models,

These business leaders act, learn, and build their way into the future. Managers in traditional organizations can do the same, starting with smart, low-risk steps that follow simple rules: Use the means at hand; stay within an acceptable loss; secure only the com

Delayed primacy recall in AVLT is associated with medial temporal tau PET burden in cognitively unimpaired adults.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be diagnosed by in vivo abnormalities of amyloid-β plaques (A) and tau accumulation (T) biomarkers. Previous studies have shown that analyses of serial position performance in episodic memory tests, and especially, delayed primacy, are associated with AD pathology even in individuals who are cognitively unimpaired. The earliest signs of cortical tau pathology are observed in medial temporal lobe (MTL) regions, yet it is unknown if serial position markers are also associated with early tau load in these regions. This study of cognitively unimpaired older

How AI sycophancy shapes learner autonomy in digitalized learning: the mediating roles of metacognitive laziness and AI dependence.

INTRODUCTION: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tutors rarely disagree. Drawing on cognitive offloading theory, this study examines how perceived AI sycophancy (PAS) and perceived AI intellectual stimulation (PAIS) relate to learner autonomy through the serial mediators of metacognitive laziness (MCL) and AI dependence (AIDEP). METHODS: Responses from 542 university students using generative AI for coursework were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), necessary condition analysis (NCA), and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Infant neural speech encoding is associated with pre-reading skill development.

OBJECTIVE: We longitudinally investigated whether infant P1 and N2 ERPs recorded in newborns and at 28 months could predict pre-reading skills at 28 months and 4-5 years. METHODS: We recorded ERPs to a pseudoword in newborns and at 28 months in a sample over-represented by infants with familial dyslexia risk. Using multiple linear regression models, we examined P1 and N2 associations with pre-reading skills at 28 months and 4-5 years. RESULTS: Shorter latencies of the newborn P1 predicted faster serial naming at 28 months. Larger amplitudes and shorter latencies of P1 at 28 months predicted

Preservation of striatal tissue and behavioral function after neural stem cell transplantation in a rat model of Huntington's disease.

Cell replacement has the potential to become a frontline therapy to remedy behavioral impairments in Huntington's disease. To determine the efficacy of stem cell transplantation, behavioral assessment and in vivo monitoring of the lesion environment are paramount. We here demonstrate that neural stem cells from the MHP36 cell line prevented the development of a deficit on the beam walk test while providing partial recovery of learning in the water maze. However, no beneficial effect on rats' impairment in the staircase test was observed. By quantification of the lesion from serial magnetic res

Evaluation of implicit motor learning across body segments in Parkinson's disease vs. healthy controls.

Alterations in motor learning are associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). Possible body segment-specificity remains unexplored and could have practical implications for testing and rehabilitation. Our aim was to investigate sequence-specific implicit motor learning differences in alternative task movements in people with early stages PD vs. age-matched healthy controls (HCs). Thirty participants with PD (67.6 ± 8.0 yrs, 1.9 ± 0.7 H&Y) and 30 HC (69.6 ± 5.2 yrs) performed three Serial Reaction Time Tasks (SRTTs), which differed for the body segment used to perform it: Hands, Arms, and Feet te

Serial position effects in the Logical Memory Test: Loss of primacy predicts amyloid positivity.

BACKGROUND: Story recall is a frequently used neuropsychological test of episodic memory with clinical populations and for screening participants in drug trials for Alzheimer's disease. However, it is unclear at this stage which underlying mechanisms confer the test its sensitivity. In this paper, we examined serial position effects, that is, better recall for items learned early and late on a list, in story recall, and their usefulness to predict early changes associated with neurodegenerative markers. METHODS: We analysed data from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention. First, w
