BACKGROUND: Military sexual trauma (MST) has been linked to a range of negative mental health outcomes-posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) most notably. This article uses a causal inference framework based on the Rubin Causal Model to investigate the relationship between MST exposure and PTSD symptom severity.
METHODS: Using data from 2488 treatment-seeking veterans and service members, we reconstructed a hypothetical randomized control trial consisting of a group with MST exposure and one without. We used Student's test-statistic and estimated regression coefficients to study the isolated e

Black pregnant females experience disproportionately higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated health complications, which may be exacerbated by exposure to sexual trauma. Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, including progesterone, may also play a key role in modulating PTSD symptoms. The current study assessed how PTSD symptoms change over pregnancy and how sexual trauma and progesterone independently impact the trajectory of PTSD symptoms in a sample of under-resourced pregnant Black females. Participants (N = 283) completed up to three interviews assessing PTS

Every year, millions of people experience intimate partner violence (IPV) and commercial sexual exploitation (CSE), with researchers increasingly discussing the overlap between these two forms of interpersonal violence. However, researchers have not yet used quantitative methods to examine the link between IPV and CSE or to explore potential mechanisms underlying the overlap, including child maltreatment risk factors and psychological mechanisms. One potential mechanism is trauma-related shame, a symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder commonly experienced by both victims of CSE and IPV. The

BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth (FoB) is experienced to some degree by most pregnant people and can be intense enough to merit treatment. Despite significant research on the topic of FoB, studies investigating various forms of maltreatment and mental health symptoms in relation to FoB are very limited. In particular, studies including multiple forms of maltreatment along with mental health symptoms as predictors of FoB are extremely limited. We sought to fill this gap and clarify the relative contributions of these variables to the prediction of FoB.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of d

Objective: Eating disorder (ED) and trauma have often been associated, and there is evidence that early experiences of traumatic events are associated with subsequent ED. Research results point toward an increased prevalence of sexual trauma in individuals with ED, and it has been suggested that sexual trauma precedes and contributes to the development of ED. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of sexual trauma as well as other types of traumatic life events in a clinical sample of children, adolescents, and adults with ED. Method: Patients (N = 329), median age 16.9 [Interquart

BACKGROUND: Exposure to maltreatment in childhood can lead to increased risk for poor health outcomes in adulthood. Child maltreatment and later poor health may be linked by premature biological aging. We tested whether childhood sexual abuse (CSA) was associated with telomere length (TL) in adult females. We further tested the hypothesis of intergenerational transmission of CSA-related effects by measuring TL in both CSA-exposed and non-exposed mothers and their children.
METHODS: Participants were a subset of females and their children in a prospective-longitudinal cohort study of sexually

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There is limited information about prevalence of insomnia in general populations of veterans of recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. No studies have examined insomnia in veterans with military sexual trauma (MST). We assess prevalence of insomnia, identify types of services sought by veterans with insomnia, and examine correlates of insomnia in veterans with and without MST.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of first-encounter veterans registering to establish care.
SETTING: Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System.

According to a long-standing clinical tradition, sexually traumatic experiences are processed and recalled differently from other experiences, often leading to memory impairment. In this study, we compared the characteristics of traumatic memories for sexual violence and two other types of emotional experiences. N=44 women recruited from a local sexual trauma agency were asked to recall and describe three autobiographical events: sexual abuse/assault, a non-sexual trauma, and a positive emotional event. The characteristics of the three memory types were compared on both subjective and objectiv

The incidence of survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) diagnosed with cancer is unknown. It is estimated that one in three women and one in six men in the United States are survivors of CSA. Survivors of CSA diagnosed with cancer are presented with multiple and potentially accumulating traumas. The re-traumatizing nature of a cancer diagnosis and treatment affects all elements of the CSA survivor's care and may impede her/his treatment. To date, the impact of CSA on the medical treatment of people with cancer has been unexplored with the existing studies on female survivors of CSA with can

IMPORTANCE: Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with substantial psychiatric sequelae, but treatment options lack evidence-based protocols tailored to this specific trauma.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a MST-focused treatment using an 8-week virtual delivery format compared with an active control treatment to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial compared Warrior Renew (MST-focused group) with Health and Wellness (active control group) at baseline, week 8 (after treatment), and week 16 (foll

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent and causes numerous deleterious effects on survivors. This study investigated the association between mental health counseling (MHC) and resilience among a large cohort of U.S. veterans who served in support of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Data were collected over 6.5 years (Wave 1: n = 9,566, Wave 8: n = 2,970). Female veterans who experienced sexual harassment, β = -.12, and both sexual harassment and unwanted sexual contact, β = -.21, had lower baseline resilience scores. For male v

INTRODUCTION: Emergency medicine (EM) providers often care for patients who present with concerns related to sexual assault (SA) or intimate partner violence (IPV). However, many providers feel uncomfortable discussing SA and IPV with patients. We aimed to design a curriculum using trauma-informed care principles to improve self-assessed competency in caring for this patient population.
METHODS: EM learners, including residents, EM physician assistant fellows, and medical students, attended a 25-minute didactic session introducing the concept of trauma-informed care and important questions to

OBJECTIVE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations have substantially higher rates of most psychopathologies. Several theoretical models have been proposed attributing the disparities to either a) additional stressors related to their minoritized status (i.e., minority stress) or b) that stressors interact with a pre-existing vulnerability. A parallel body of research posits minority stress as a form of trauma and connects discrimination to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
METHOD: The present study attempts bridge these two areas of literature by testing if SGM status-a proxy for m

Given the alarming increase in incidences of child sexual abuse (CSA), the present study was conceived to conduct a feasibility trial for a brief CSA-focused cognitive-behavioral intervention for children. A quasi-experimental single-group pre-post design with convenient sampling was adopted. The intervention module was administered to 20 children aged 7-13 years (M = 10.4, SD = 1.3) with a CSA history. The intervention was spread across a minimum of six required sessions and a maximum of 12 sessions held weekly for approximately 90 to 120 minutes' duration to restore the child's functioning a

South Africa has extraordinarily high levels of CSA with profound immediate and long-term mental health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the mental health adjustment of children who experienced CSA and accessed support services using mixed methods. Structured interviews using validated mental health screening tools were conducted with children, between the ages of 7-18 years at three intervals over a 10-month period. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with primary caregivers to explore their views on the child's adjustment, and a validated parenting measure was used

Sexual abuse (SA) perpetration is a significant public health problem; SA perpetration is most likely to emerge during adolescence and youth ages 13 to 17 account for a significant portion of all child sexual abuse. While research shows that these youth have high rates of adversity, once they have engaged in problem sexual behavior (PSB), their own trauma histories are often ignored with treatment primarily focused on reducing risk for reoffending. Although sexual re-offense rates among adolescents with PSB are very low, the rates of non-sexual recidivism are considerably higher; with almost h

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent, and some initial evidence suggests it is associated with impaired employment outcomes. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers supported employment (SE) and Community-Based Employment Services (CBES), which consist of individualized employment support integrated with mental health treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and effect of MST on competitive employment outcomes following participation in SE or CBES. Participants were a national set of Veterans who participated in VHA SE or CBES services between 2015 and

BACKGROUND: Youth who have experienced sexual abuse sometimes also experience non-supportive responses, such as accusations of lying, from people in their family and social environment. Little is known about how such responses from different sources (caregivers, friends, other adults) correlate with one another and operate together in the prediction of youth problematic thinking, such as self-blame, and trauma symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: To better understand how non-supportive responses from different sources relate to one another and contribute to youth problems following sexual abuse.
