Sensitive periods in cortical specialization for language: insights from studies with Deaf and blind individuals.

Studies with Deaf and blind individuals demonstrate that linguistic and sensory experiences during sensitive periods have potent effects on neurocognitive basis of language. Native users of sign and spoken languages recruit similar fronto-temporal systems during language processing. By contrast, delays in sign language access impact proficiency and the neural basis of language. Analogously, early but not late-onset blindness modifies the neural basis of language. People born blind recruit 'visual' areas during language processing, show reduced left-lateralization of language and enhanced perfo

Nursing perceptions toward Deaf and DeafBlind individuals: a cross-sectional study.

Communication is a significant barrier for persons who are Deaf and persons who are DeafBlind when accessing healthcare services. Most healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with sign language, which complicates the provision of holistic care. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess differences between employed nursing professionals and nursing students in three areas: motivation to learn Croatian Sign Language, knowledge about persons who are Deaf and persons who are DeafBlind, and opinions toward them. In both questionnaires, the same questions were asked for direct comparison between th

Writing outcomes and expressive language use of deaf high school students.

This study explores the writing performance of deaf high school students, focusing on narrative, argumentative, and argumentative-with-sources genres, and examining the role of expressive language proficiency and early language exposure. Using a descriptive research design, the writing samples of 75 students were scored for idea development, organization, style, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions using automated scoring. Results revealed a range of low to mid performance, with the argumentative-with-sources writing scoring similarly to narrative writing and showing incremental grow

Case Studies of Multilingual/Multicultural Asian Deaf Adults: Strategies for Success.

Case studies of adult d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are few, especially studies of DMLs who learn more than one sign language and read logographic and alphabetic scripts. To reduce this paucity, two descriptive case studies are presented. Written questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, and self-appraisals of language-use rubrics were used to explore (a) the language and literacy histories of two adult Asian DMLs who had learned multiple languages: Chinese (spoken/written), English (written), Chinese Sign Language, and American Sign Language; and (b) how each language

Teachers' use of semiotic resources in the multimodal-multilingual language instruction.

Teaching newly immigrated deaf and hard-of-hearing multimodal-multilingual learners requires the flexible and adapted use of diverse semiotic resources. This study adopts a linguistic ethnography approach to examine how three teachers use various semiotic resources in classrooms where German and German Sign Language (DGS) are taught simultaneously. The study analyzes (a) which semiotic resources are employed and (b) how teachers jointly use them to support students' languages learning. The findings reveal that teachers commonly draw on DGS, written (and spoken) German, and further semiotic res

Deaf patients' preferred communication in clinical settings: implications for healthcare providers.

Deaf patients who communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) experience communication challenges leading to medical errors, treatment delays, and health disparities. Research on Deaf patient communication preferences is sparse. Researchers conducted focus groups based on the Health Belief Model with culturally Deaf patients and interpreters. The ASL focus groups were interpreted and transcribed into written English, verified by a third-party interpreting agency, and uploaded into NVivo. Deductive coding was used to identify communication methods and inductive coding was used to identify theme

A Novel Magnetometer Array-based wearable system for ASL gesture recognition.

Hand gesture classification is of high importance in any sign language recognition (SLR) system, which is expected to assist individuals suffering from hearing and speech impairment. American sign language (ASL) comprises of static and dynamic gestures representing many alphabets, phrases, and words. ASL recognition system allows us to digitize communication and use it effectively within or outside the hearing-deprived community. Developing an ASL recognition system has been a challenge since some of the involved hand gestures closely resemble each other, and thereby it demands high discrimina

Deaf Student-Interpreter Relationships and Feedback Practices in K-12 Mainstream Deaf Education.

This study explores Deaf individuals' and sign language interpreters' perspectives on what it is like to work together in K-12 education. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed Deaf individuals and interpreters offers insights into interactional dynamics (e.g., the deaf student-interpreter relationship) that influence interpreters' work, deaf students' participation and learning, and feedback practices. This study illustrates the significance of the deaf student-interpreter relationship and suggests a correlation between this relationship and deaf students' participation and positioning in mainst

Functional and structural brain connectivity in congenital deafness.

Several studies have been carried out to verify neural plasticity and the language process in deaf individuals. However, further investigations regarding the intrinsic brain organization on functional and structural neural networks derived from congenital deafness are still an open question. The objective of this study was to investigate the main differences in brain organization manifested in congenitally deaf individuals, concerning the resting-state functional patterns, and white matter structuring. Functional and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging modalities were acquired from 18 congeni

[Health policies and definitions of deafness and hearing impairment in the SUS: a monologue?].

Two theoretical definitions are central to the discussion on hearing impairment and deafness: the organic/biological definition and the social/anthropological definition. They differ essentially in the definition of a hypothetical boundary of normality and in the understanding of deaf individuals as a linguistic minority. This study aimed to identify how these definitions were expressed in the health policies for persons with hearing impairment/deafness in the Brazillian Unified National Health System (SUS). A document survey was performed with a focus on health policies for hearing impairment

Evaluation of a specialist cognitive clinic for the Deaf community.

There are significant health inequalities between Deaf and hearing people, including barriers to accessing care and communication difficulties in consultations. Such problems have particularly affected Deaf people with acquired cognitive deficits, leading to late and missed diagnoses. We therefore established a specialist cognitive clinic for the Deaf community in 2011 at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind in the world. In this study, we retrospectively analysed electronic patient records to evaluate the service and its impact

Effects of alternative communication on the communicative effectiveness of an individual with a progressive language disorder.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of two different modes of communication on the communicative output of an individual who is no longer able to communicate verbally, presenting with a primary progressive aphasia and apraxia of speech. The two treatment approaches included training the patient with a text-to-speech alternative communication device and with American sign language. An alternating treatment design was used to compare two communicative approaches (an alternative communication device and American sign language) on the subject's communicative effectiveness. Interventions to improve communication in autism.

Children with autism benefit from intensive, early intervention that focuses on increasing the frequency, form, and function of communicative acts. Available evidence shows that highly structured behavioral methods have important positive consequences for these children, particularly in eliciting first words. However, the limitation of these methods in maintenance and generalization of skills suggests that many children with autism will need to have these methods supplemented with less adult-directed activities to increase communicative initiation and carry over learned skills to new settings

The evolution of the critical period for language acquisition.

Evidence suggests that there is a critical, or at least a sensitive, period for language acquisition, which ends around puberty. The existence of this period is explained by an evolutionary model which assumes that (a) linguistic ability is in principle (if not in practice) measurable, and (b) the amount of language controlled by an individual conferred selective advantage on it. In this model, the language faculty is seen as adaptive, favoured by natural selection, while the critical period for language acquisition itself is not an adaptation, but arises from the interplay of genetic factors

An intelligent fusion-based transfer learning model with artificial protozoa optimiser for enhancing gesture recognition to aid visually impaired people.

Generally, the interaction of gestures presents a set of benefits to persons with disabilities, from improving motor, social, and cognitive skills to delivering a secure and controlled atmosphere for engaging in real-world scenarios. Automatic detection methods, such as hand gesture recognition (GR), are among the most active research fields. Hand gestures, particularly in the form of sign language (SL), are one of the effective modes of non-verbal interaction and a stimulating area of research because they can simplify communication and serve as a standard method of communication, employed in

Developmental experiences alter the temporal processing characteristics of the visual cortex: Evidence from deaf and hearing native signers.

To date, the extent to which early experience shapes the functional characteristics of neural circuits is still a matter of debate. In the present study, we tested whether congenital deafness and/or the acquisition of a sign language alter the temporal processing characteristics of the visual system. Moreover, we investigated whether, assuming cross-modal plasticity in deaf individuals, the temporal processing characteristics of possibly reorganised auditory areas resemble those of the visual cortex. Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) were recorded in congenitally deaf native signe

Professionals' Perspectives on Supporting Deaf Multilingual Learners and Their Families.

Parents frequently report that advice from professionals is important in making decisions about how their child with hearing loss will communicate. Little is currently known about how professionals support parents raising children with hearing loss in spoken language multilingual environments, children who are described as d/Deaf multilingual learners (DMLs). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain insight into professionals' perspectives and experiences working with such families, particularly in relation to supporting parents in decision-making about multilingualism and langua

Understanding 'not': neuropsychological dissociations between hand and head markers of negation in BSL.

Simple negation in natural languages represents a complex interrelationship of syntax, prosody, semantics and pragmatics, and may be realised in various ways: lexically, morphologically and prosodically. In almost all spoken languages, the first two of these are the primary realisations of syntactic negation. In contrast, in many signed languages negation can occur without lexical or morphological marking. Thus, in British Sign Language (BSL), negation is obligatorily expressed using face-head actions alone (facial negation) with the option of articulating a manual form alongside the required
