The identification of a novel compound heterozygous mutation in hereditary human coagulation factor VII deficiency following a bamboo leaf green snake bite.

Hereditary factor VII (FVII) deficiency is an uncommon autosomal recessive disorder associated with mutations in the F7 gene, and laboratory investigations usually reveal isolated prolongation in prothrombin time (PT)/international normalized ratio (INR). Venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy (VICC) is distinguished by the activation of the coagulation pathway, which is triggered by procoagulant toxins in snake venom. Diagnosing snakebites in patients with hereditary FVII deficiency presents a challenge because prolonged time PT/INR is considered the most valuable diagnostic method for VICC.

Clinical Profile and Outcome of Snake Bite Patients from Tertiary Healthcare Center: In Sub-Himalayan Region: A Medical College-based Study.

OBJECTIVE: Snake bite is an emergency in tropical and subtropical countries. It is a neglected disease and is most commonly seen in rural setups, where people are ignorant about the venomous snake bites. It results in increased mortality and morbidity because precious time is wasted, either in consulting traditional healers or waiting for the development of signs and symptoms of envenomation. Then only the patient is shifted to a health center. Here we studied the clinical profile, management, and outcome of snake bite patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was done by retrieving the rec

An Unnecessary Russell's Viper Bite on the Tongue Due to Live Snake Worship and Dangerous First Aid Emphasise the Urgent Need for Stringent Policies.

India suffers the highest incidence of snakebite envenomation (SBE) in the world. Rural communities within India and other countries have long-held cultural beliefs surrounding snakes and SBE treatments, with snake statues present in numerous Hindu temples. While most cultural beliefs are well respected and do not affect anyone, some people worship live venomous snakes without any safety precautions. Moreover, they practice various inappropriate first aid and traditional treatments that exacerbate SBE-induced complications. We report an unusual case of SBE on the tongue of a patient who was bi

IgG subclass distributions of anti-horse serum antibodies and natural venom-antibodies produced in response to antivenom injection or snake bite in humans.

The Japanese Mamushi (Agkistrodon halys blomhoffi, BOIE) is the most common snake in Japan. Bite victims treated with antivenom (horse serum) can produce antibodies against the horse serum and the snake venom. We studied distributions of the IgG subclasses of both these antibodies produced in response to antivenom injection and snake bite. We found that IgG1 and IgG4 of each antibody in the victims' serum were present for a long period of time.

Management of snake bite during third trimester of pregnancy with coagulopathy and delivery of a live baby in resource-limited setting in Nepal: a case report.

We reported a case of snakebite in an 18-year-old woman, Gravida 2 Para 1+0 in the third trimester of pregnancy who presented with pain and swelling over the left hand and forearm and vaginal spotting. The laboratory investigations revealed coagulopathy attributed to green pit viper envenomation. On the fourth day of admission, the patient developed sudden abdominal pain and massive per vaginal bleeding with haemorrhagic shock, most likely abruptio placentae. In Nepal, no anti-snake venom has been developed for green pit-viper. So, she was managed conservatively, including blood transfusion, a

[Pedicled thoraco-abdominal skin flap applied in early repair of deep ulcer of upper extremity resulting from snake-bite injury].

The ulcer resulting from snake-bite injury was characterized by deep and wide tissue necrosis and secondary infection. The patient was at high risk of loss of function of his extremity. From 1989 to 1996, 16 cases with deep ulcer of the upper extremity resulting from snake-bite injury were treated with different types of axial thoraco-abdominal skin flaps, depending on the location of the ulcer. Thoraco-umbilical skin flap was used in 2 cases, lateral thoracoabdominal skin flap in 1 case, iliolumbar skin flaps in 5 cases, lower abdominal skin flaps in 6 cases, lower abdominal divided foliated

High incidence of bites and stings by snakes and other animals among rubber tappers and Amazonian Indians of the Juruá Valley, Acre State, Brazil.

Among forest-dwelling Amazonian Indians and rubber tappers (seringueiros) of the Juruá valley in Acre State, north-western Brazil, snakebite is an important cause of morbidity and death. Overall, 13% of a surveyed population had been bitten during their lifetime. Seventeen per cent of Katukina Indians, but only 8% of Ashaninkas, had been bitten by snakes reflecting, perhaps, different levels of traditional knowledge of the forest and its dangers. Most bites occurred in the jungle or on jungle trails (56%), while people were working (41%) or walking (26%), and were inflicted on the feet (54%).

Delayed presentation of a snake bite with multiple life threatening complications in third trimester pregnancy successfully managed in resource limited setting: case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Snakebite envenoming is a potentially life-threatening condition and a common public health problem, particularly in developing countries. Envenomation during pregnancy is rare but carries serious consequences for both the mother and the fetus. Antivenom is the primary treatment; however, its unavailability, along with limited healthcare facilities in developing countries, contributes to significant mortality. In the reported case, we present a 35-year-old woman in her third trimester who developed multiple complications from a snakebite and was managed at our inst

Wound Botulism Complicating a Snake Bite Wound Following Traditional Application of Raw Goat Skin Successfully Treated with Botulinum Antitoxin: A Case Report.

Wound botulism is a rare, life-threatening neuroparalytic disease caused by neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum in contaminated wounds. Traditional wound care practices, such as applying animal products, may increase the risk. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman from Afghanistan who presented with progressive descending neurological deficits, including bilateral ptosis, blurred vision, diplopia, nasal speech, dysphagia, and respiratory distress. Symptoms began nine months after a snake bite to the left lower leg that evolved into chronic non-healing calf ulcers. Traditional tre

A bite by the emerald snake, Hapsidophrys smaragdinus Schlegel, 1837 (Colubridae, Colubrinae) causing atopic eczema with comments on the formal documentation of non-front-fanged snakebites.

The mixed quality evidence about non-front-fanged snake bites has included unsupported speculation and presumption; the possible role of atopy and/or primary hypersensitivity have often been prematurely discounted. Described is a medically insignificant bite by a captive African emerald snake, Hapsidophrys smaragdinus Schlegel, 1837 (Colubridae, Colubrinae) that caused the development of moderate Type IV hypersensitivity; the 44-year-old male victim experienced persistent pruritis and an erythematous bite site maculopapular dermatitis that slowly resolved and required 6 days for full resolutio

A randomized blinded clinical trial of two antivenoms, prepared by caprylic acid or ammonium sulphate fractionation of IgG, in Bothrops and Porthidium snake bites in Colombia: correlation between safety and biochemical characteristics of antivenoms.

A randomized blinded clinical trial was performed in 53 patients bitten by Bothrops sp. and Porthidium sp. in Antioquia and Chocó, Colombia, in order to compare the efficacy and safety of two antivenoms made of whole IgG obtained by either ammonium sulphate (monovalent anti-B. atrox) or caprylic acid (polyvalent) fractionation. Additionally, antivenoms were compared by electrophoretic and chromatographic analyses and anticomplementary activity in vitro. With a protocol of 2, 4 and 6 antivenom vials for the treatment of mild, moderate and severe envenomings, respectively, both antivenoms were e

The legitimacy of rattlesnake bites in central Arizona.

Previous authors have classified poisonous snake bites as being legitimate or illegitimate, depending on whether the victim was taking unnecessary risks with a snake before being bitten. We reviewed medical records of 86 consecutive rattlesnake bite victims cared for at a single medical center to determine legitimacy of snake bites. A bite was considered illegitimate if, before being bitten, the victim recognized an encounter with a snake but did not attempt to move away from the snake. A legitimate bite was said to have occurred if a person was bitten before an encounter with a snake was reco

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Triggered by Snake Bite: Diagnostic Utility of Triple-Phase Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography-Computed Tomography Bone Scan-Case Report.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain disorder with complex pathophysiology involving neurogenic inflammation and autonomic dysfunction. While CRPS is typically associated with trauma or surgery, its occurrence following a snakebite is extremely rare. We report the case of a 47-year-old man who developed persistent pain, swelling, and hypersensitivity in the left foot after a snakebite to the dorsum. Despite prompt administration antivenom and admission to the intensive care unit, the symptoms progressed without systemic infection. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed ev

Pediatric scorpion and snake envenomation in Türkiye: clinical features, management, and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Scorpion stings and snake bites are significant public health problems in Türkiye, particularly among children. In Türkiye, Androctonus crassicauda and Mesobuthus eupeus scorpions often cause systemic neurotoxic effects, while Vipera species snake bites mainly result in local tissue injury and hematological abnormalities. These envenomations may lead to serious complications if not promptly recognized and managed. We describe the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of pediatric envenomations caused by scorpions and snakes. METHODS: This retrospective study included pediat
