Alcohol-based hand sanitizers: severe intoxication in children.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are an alternative to hand washing with soap and water when water is unavailable. Their use has increased over the last decade. Cases of acute intoxication have been reported in children after accidental ingestion of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, sometimes leading to inebriation, agitation, drowsiness, impaired consciousness, and blood alcohol levels sometimes exceeding 2 g/I. In practice, alcohol-based hand sanitizers should be kept out of reach of children and should only be used when hand washing with soap and water is not possible. The possibility of alcohol

Trends in pediatric household cleaning product exposures before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a national poison data system analysis (2016-2023).

BACKGROUND: Unintentional exposures to household cleaning products remain a common cause of pediatric poison center calls in the United States, particularly among children under six. Most exposures involve toddlers and rarely result in severe outcomes. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on exposure patterns has not been well characterized. This study evaluates trends in pediatric exposures from 2016 to 2023, with a focus on changes in 2020. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of unintentional exposures to household cleaning products reported to the National Poison Data System from

Adequacy of sanitization and storage of catheters for intermittent use after washing and microwave sterilization.

PURPOSE: Clean intermittent catheterization is used to treat neurogenic bladders and it can be adequate to maintain sterile urine. Typically polyvinylchloride, individually packaged catheters are used but they are not intended for repeat use by the manufacturer. Antibacterial soap alone or combined with microwave heating was advocated to decrease pathogens and bacterial residue, which could inoculate the bladder from a colonized catheter. We assessed the efficacy of catheter sanitizing and storage for reuse. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Catheters were inoculated with a 24-hour broth culture of Esch

Contact allergy to methyldibromo glutaronitrile--data from a 'front line' network.

The preservative methyldibromo glutaronitrile (MDBGN) has caused an epidemic of contact allergy in Europe. However, most data concerning contact allergy comes from hospital departments of dermatology. As a part of the primary health care sector, Danish dermatologists in private practice provide the front line of care for patients with skin diseases. Data from this source may therefore better reflect trends in the general population than material from hospital departments of dermatology. In this study, the frequency of MDBGN allergy and the characteristics of patients seen by dermatologists in

Handwashing among female college students.

Handwashing has been recognized as a critical factor in infection control policies. Whereas handwashing compliance among health care workers and school-aged students has been previously documented, practices among college students remain relatively unknown. The objective of this study was to determine handwashing compliance of female college students after using the bathroom. A researcher situated in a toilet stall unobtrusively observed handwashing compliance among 100 female students. Most students (63%) washed their hands, 38% used soap, 32% washed with soap for 5 or more seconds, but only

[Photoallergy: results of photo patch testing in dermatological patients (author's transl)].

150 patients with light sensitivity of unknown aetiology were photo patch tested at the 2nd Department of Dermatology University of Vienna. 22 patients showed photoallergy. The identified photoallergens were mostly halogenated salicylanilides and other phenolic compounds. These substances are used as antimicrobials in soaps and cosmetics and as antimycotics in dermatological preparations. Four of the patients showed allergic contact photosensitivity to chlorpromazine. In two patients a new photoallergen has, perhaps, been discovered, namely a derivative of phthalic acid which is employed as fu

Hand hygiene infrastructure and point-of-care resource availability in public hospitals in Sierra Leone: a national multicentre cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores hospital hand hygiene (HH) infrastructure and point-of-care (POC) resource availability in Sierra Leone's public hospitals. METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional survey was conducted in 19 public hospitals between February to March 2025. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) Ward Infrastructure Survey tool (WIS), 155 wards were assessed. Outcomes included ward-level availability of water, soap, alcohol-based handrub (ABHR), towels, posters, and audits, plus POC indicators such as sink/dispenser density and bedside ABHR access. Analyses were descriptive,

Bacterial contamination of mobile handwashing stations in hospital settings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: As part of the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile handwashing stations (mHWS) were deployed in healthcare facilities in low-resource settings. We assessed mHWS in hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for contamination with Gram-negative bacteria. METHODS: Water and soap samples of in-use mHWS in hospitals in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi were quantitatively cultured for Gram-negative bacteria which were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. Meropenem resistant isolates were assessed for carbapenemase enzymes using inhibitor-based disk and immunochromatographic tes

Efficacy of selected hand hygiene agents used to remove Bacillus atrophaeus (a surrogate of Bacillus anthracis) from contaminated hands.

CONTEXT: The intentional use of Bacillus anthracis transmitted via the US mail in October-November 2001 resulted in 22 people developing inhalation or cutaneous anthrax. Glove use with handwashing prior to and after contact with potential contaminated environmental surfaces and cutaneous lesions has been recommended. However, only limited data are available on the susceptibility of B anthracis to antiseptics. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of several hand antiseptics (interventions) and soap and water (control) against Bacillus atrophaeus, a surrogate of B anthracis. DESIGN, SETTING, AN

Estimation of the safe use concentrations of the preservative 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) in consumer cleaning products and sunscreens.

1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT; CAS # 2634-33-5) is a preservative used in consumer products. Dermal exposure to BIT at sufficient dose and duration can produce skin sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis in animals and susceptible humans. The purpose of this study is to derive a maximal concentration of BIT in various consumer products that would result in exposures below the No Expected Sensitization Induction Level (NESIL), a dose below which skin sensitization should not occur. A screening level exposure estimate was performed for several product use scenarios with sunscreen, laundr

Calcium inhibits the damaging and compensatory proliferative effects of fatty acids on mouse colon epithelium.

Intrarectal instillations of the fatty acids (FA), lauric, linoleic or oleic acids induce inflammation and superficial lysis of the colon epithelium. This reaction is followed by increases in colonic mitotic activity and the number of cells engaged in DNA synthesis in compensatory regeneration for the cells that were lost. This explains, in part, the promotional effect of dietary fat in carcinogenesis. Concomitant oral administration of calcium salts, as CaCO3, largely reduced the mitogenic effects of fatty acids on colon epithelium, presumably by forming biologically inert calcium soaps. Calc

Best products for skin antisepsis.

BACKGROUND: Skin antiseptics are used for several purposes before surgical procedures, for bathing high-risk patients as a means of reducing central line-associated infections and other health care associated infections. METHODS: A PubMed search was performed to update the evidence on skin antiseptic products and practices. RESULTS: Current guidelines for prevention of surgical site infections (SSIs) recommend preoperative baths or showers with a plain or antimicrobial soap prior to surgery, but do not make recommendations on the timing of baths, the total number of baths needed, or about th

Evaluation of the effects of repeated disinfection on medical exam gloves: Part 2. Changes in mechanical properties.

Many healthcare professionals have been forced, under acute shortages, to extend medical exam gloves beyond their intended single use. Despite limited available literature, the CDC proposed a set of guidelines for repeated exam gloves use, indicating a maximum number of treatments for three widely available disinfectants. This study examines how these treatments affect the mechanical properties of latex and nitrile gloves. Furthermore, an acceptability threshold is proposed for changes in tensile property, specifically elastic modulus, as an indication of degradation. This proposed criterion w

Triclosan exposure, transformation, and human health effects.

Triclosan (TCS) is an antimicrobial used so ubiquitously that 75% of the US population is likely exposed to this compound via consumer goods and personal care products. In September 2016, TCS was banned from soap products following the risk assessment by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, TCS still remains, at high concentrations, in other personal care products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, and surgical soaps. TCS is readily absorbed into human skin and oral mucosa and found in various human tissues and fluids. The aim of this review was to describe TCS expos

Dose response relationships in delayed hypersensitivity to quinoline dyes.

Repeat insult patch testing of the quinoline dyes, D & C Yellow No. 10 (Acid Yellow No. 3) and D & C Yellow No. 11 (Solvent Yellow No. 33) demonstrated that concentrations as high as 1,000 ppm of the former induced no delayed contact hypersensitivity, whereas, concentrations of 20 ppm and 10 ppm of D & C Yellow No. 11 induced delayed hypersensitivity reactions in human volunteer panelists. No definitive hypersensitivity resulted from testing with 5 ppm of this dye. 2 persons who had been demonstrated to have reacted allergically to the use of a soap bar that contained D & C Yellow No. 11 did n

Effects of washing on the bacterial flora of the stallion's penis.

Six stallions were subjected to extensive cleansing of the penis and prepuce with water, Ivory Soap and water, or Betadine surgical scrub and water. The stallions were all washed for 14 days, and then allowed 14 days respite. This pattern of washing and resting was repeated consecutively. Swabs were taken from all 7 stallions twice weekly and semen was collected once a week for bacteriological examination. All forms of cleansing altered the bacterial flora of the stallion's penis; the Ivory Soap tended to encourage the replacement of the normal flora with coliform organisms, while Betadine fav

Efficacy of water-based skin decontamination of occupational chemicals using in vitro human skin models: a systematic review.

Percutaneous absorption of chemicals is a potential route of topical and systemic toxicity. Skin decontamination interrupts this process by removing contaminants from the skin surface. Decontamination using water-only or soap and water solutions is the current gold standard despite limited efficacy data. A summary of studies evaluating their efficacy in decontaminating occupational contaminants from in vitro human skin models is presented. Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles and data extracted from 15 investigations that reported on 2
