The centrality of event scale: a measure of integrating a trauma into one's identity and its relation to post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

We introduce a new scale that measures how central an event is to a person's identity and life story. For the most stressful or traumatic event in a person's life, the full 20-item Centrality of Event Scale (CES) and the short 7-item scale are reliable (alpha's of .94 and .88, respectively) in a sample of 707 undergraduates. The scale correlates .38 with PTSD symptom severity and .23 with depression. The present findings are discussed in relation to previous work on individual differences related to PTSD symptoms. Possible connections between the CES and measures of maladaptive attributions an

Intersectional Social Identity, Perceived Discrimination, and Mental Health Among Older Adults in India.

Although adverse mental health outcomes linked to discrimination among older adults have been well acknowledged, our understanding of the discrimination-mental health link in non-Western paradigms is still limited. Using data from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) with an intersectional approach, we examined how perceived discrimination was linked to the level of depressive symptoms among older adults in India and how this association was moderated by caste and gender. Our ordered logistic regression models indicated that higher levels of perceived discrimination are associated with

Exploring resource profiles among trauma exposed youth: An identity-focused, cultural, and person-centered approach.

OBJECTIVE: Resilience is a multi-faceted construct comprised of both internal and external resources that support adaptive functioning following trauma exposure. The role of resilience in ameliorating internalizing symptoms may depend on its typology as opposed to its presence alone, suggesting the existence of distinct subpopulations with heterogeneous resource profiles. The current study employs Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify and characterize profiles of resilience-related resources among youth exposed to trauma from an identity-focused, cultural lens. METHOD: Patterns of resourc

The Transformation of Group Identity Among Parents of Children With Cochlear Implants in China: A Social Identity Perspective.

This study aims to explore the transformation of parental perspectives on the identity of being a parent of a child with cochlear implant (CI), termed CI parent herein, within the context of Chinese culture. Narrative interviews were conducted with six parents from three families who have children with CIs. Using a narrative inquiry approach, this study reveals that the group identity of Chinese CI parents is dynamic. Their group identity changes through three stages: happy to be a CI parent, striving to be a parent of hearing children, and becoming a parent of excellent children. Additionally

Associations between gendered racism, racial identity, and nicotine use among Asian American men.

OBJECTIVES: The present study utilized an intersectional framework to examine if two forms of gendered racism, psychological emasculation and messages about Asian American men being undesirable partners, were associated with Asian American men's nicotine use. We also examined the potential mediating roles of two racial identity statuses, racial conformity and racial immersion. METHODS: A sample of 356 Asian American men living in the United States of America (USA) completed a cross-sectional survey via Qualtrics containing measures assessing the aforementioned constructs of interest. The prim

Becoming incapacitated? Long-term sickness benefit recipients and the construction of stigma and identity narratives.

The transition to becoming 'incapacitated' and receiving sickness benefits represents a significant shift in an individual's narrative. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 25 long-term sickness benefits recipients in North-East England, this article focuses upon how individuals perceived and managed becoming 'incapacitated', particularly in relation to stigma and identity. The findings show that participants negotiated changes to their identity in varying ways - constructing new dimensions of self, validating their illness and pursuing aspirations. Importantly, the transition onto sickness ben

The effect of social and situational factors on the intended response to aggression among adolescents.

In this study, I explored intended response to aggression among adolescents. I drew hypotheses from social identity theory, cost/benefit considerations, and social information processing model. I asked 217 Jewish and Muslim male adolescents in this study to assess their intended use of aggression in 12 hypothetical conflict situations (vignettes), in which I manipulated the opponent's religion, gender, acquaintance, and severity of aggression. I mainly found that male adolescents respond to aggression by same-religion opponents more moderately than to cross-religion aggression; their response

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate sexual orientation disclosure and mental health among young men who have sex with men (YMSMs). To this end, we constructed a chained multimediator model of sexual minority stigma, sexual minority identity, social support, and resilience, with the moderator of sexual orientation disclosure. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 345 YMSMs in Nanning, China. Bivariate analysis was used to evaluate factors associated with sexual orientation disclosure. Sexual minority stigma was used to predict identity, with social support as the step 1 m

Advocacy Communication and Social Identity: An Exploration of Social Media Outreach.

Increasingly, advocacy organizations employ social networking sites as inexpensive and often effective ways to disseminate outreach messages. For groups working to reach lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth, social media provide key platforms for connecting with target audiences. Although these young people increasingly utilize social media, little is known about how digital advocacy campaigns influence their sexual identity formation. This article applies concepts of social identity to examine how LGBTQ youth understand advocacy campaigns, how they perceive LGBTQ as a

Factors associated with alcohol abstinence in North American Indigenous youth: Age, gender, and cultural identity.

BACKGROUND: North American Indigenous youth are at increased risk for alcohol use, yet little literature explores why some choose to abstain from alcohol use. This study aimed to: characterize the reasons why Indigenous youth abstain from alcohol; explore how these reasons vary by age, sex, and whether or not the youth reside on or off a reservation; and examine how reasons for abstaining may mediate the relationship between cultural identity and intentions to drink 5 years in the future. METHODS: Data were sourced from the Substance Use Among American Indian Youth: Epidemiology and Etiology,

The Changing Process of Disability Identity: A Trajectory Equifinality Model Analysis of Japanese with Physical Disabilities.

This study examines the development of disability identity in Japan’s disability community. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three Japanese participants with physical disabilities who had active interaction with others with disabilities. The interview transcription was analyzed using the KJ method and the Trajectory Equifinality Model developed in Japan. The analysis showed that the participants coped with a sense of isolation from society and experienced dilemmas about their invisible disabilities. They broadened their views from personal to general disability issues at several

The strong Black woman stereotype and identity shifting among Black women in academic and other professional spaces.

BACKGROUND: Black women, relative to their Black male and White counterparts, may be more prone to experiencing racism and sexism in academic and other professional settings due to the "double jeopardy" or stigma of being both Black and a woman. Few studies have quantitatively studied how Black women in academic and professional spaces may mitigate the oppressive circumstances experienced by engaging in a coping strategy called identity shifting. OBJECTIVES: This study used an intersectional framework to investigate the relationships between the strong Black woman (SBW) stereotype, gendered r

Ethnic Identity and Past 30-Day Opioid Misuse: Mediating Effect of Relational Support.

INTRODUCTION: Black Americans in Kentucky are disproportionately dying from opioid overdoses compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Despite increased mortality among this population, limited research examines factors associated with recent opioid misuse among Black adults in Kentucky. Previous literature shows that relational support and ethnic identity protect racial and ethnic minority groups from substance use behaviors, but limited research examines how these factors are associated with opioid misuse among Black adults. Grounded in Social Identity Theory, the present study examines th

An intervention to build social identities improves mental health and wellbeing in people with elevated social anxiety: Evidence from a single-arm clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Current best-practice treatments for social anxiety disorder do not directly address loneliness, despite its role in the maintenance of the condition. The current study targets this issue directly, using mixed methods to provide an initial test of the efficacy of an established loneliness intervention, Groups 4 Health (G4H), among 33 people with clinically elevated social anxiety symptoms. DESIGN: A single-arm design was used and outcomes were assessed at baseline, programme completion and 5-month follow-up (3 months after programme completion). METHODS: Loneliness, social anxiet

The moderating role of sexual identity centrality in the association between gay community stress and social anxiety among sexual minority men.

Gay community stress has been linked to social anxiety among sexual minority men; however, the moderating role of identity-related processes (e.g., sexual identity centrality) has yet to be examined in this association. The present study investigated the association between gay community stress and two measures of social anxiety (i.e., self-reported social anxiety symptoms and interviewer-based diagnostic assessment of social anxiety disorder), as well as the moderating role of sexual identity centrality. Data come from the baseline assessment of a randomized controlled trial testing an LGBTQ-

I. INTRODUCTION: MOVING THROUGH ADOLESCENCE: DEVELOPMENTAL TRAJECTORIES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN AMERICAN YOUTH.

In this monograph, we investigate the developmental trajectories of a predominantly middle-class, community-based sample of European American and African American adolescents growing up in urban, suburban, and rural areas in Maryland, United States. Within risk-protection and positive youth development frameworks, we selected developmental measures based on the normative tasks of adolescence and the most widely studied indicators in the three major contexts of development: families, peer groups, and schools. Using hierarchical linear growth models, we estimated adolescents' growth trajectories
