Network centrality for the identification of biomarkers in respondent-driven sampling datasets.

Networks science techniques are frequently used to provide meaningful insights into the populations underlying medical and social data. This paper examines SATHCAP, a dataset related to HIV and drug use in three US cities. In particular, we use network measures such as betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, and eigenvector centrality to find central, important nodes in a network derived from SATHCAP data. We evaluate the attributes of these important nodes and create an exceptionality score based on the number of nodes that share a particular attribute. This score, along with the underl

The relationship between passive social network site use and sub-threshold depression among college students: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Sub-threshold depression is a prevalent psychological adaptation issue among university students. Although prior research has explored the potential relationship between social media use and depressive symptoms, the findings have been inconsistent, and the potential mediating and moderating mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to examine the relationship between passive social network site use and sub-threshold depression in college students from the perspective of the differential susceptibility to media effects model, investigating the mediating role of fear of missing out

The Double Meaning of Online Social Space: Three-Way Interactions Among Social Anxiety, Online Social Behavior, and Offline Social Behavior.

The present study aimed to investigate how online and offline social behavior interact with each other ultimately to affect the well-being of socially anxious adolescents. Based on previous studies, it was assumed that there might be three-way interactive effects among online social behavior, offline social behavior, and social anxiety regarding the relationship with well-being. To measure social anxiety, online and offline social behavior, and mental well-being, self-report questionnaires such as the Korean-Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, Korean version of the Relational Maintenance Beha

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

Social network correlates of risky sexual behavior among adolescents in Bahir Dar and Mecha Districts, North West Ethiopia: an institution-based study.

BACKGROUND: Behaviors established during adolescence such as risky sexual behaviors have negative effects on future health and well-being. Extant literature indicated that individual attributes such as peer pressure and substance use have impacts on healthy development of young peoples' sexual behavior. The patterns of relationships (social network structure) and the social network content (members' norm regarding sexual practice) established by adolescents' network on adolescents' risky sexual behaviors are not well investigated. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed the roles of soci

OxyContin® as currency: OxyContin® use and increased social capital among rural Appalachian drug users.

Studies have shown that position within networks of social relations can have direct implications on the health behaviors of individuals. The present study examines connections between drug use and individual social capital within social networks of drug users (n = 503) from rural Appalachian Kentucky, U.S.A. Respondent driven sampling was used to recruit individuals age 18 and older who had used one of the following drugs to get high: cocaine, crack, heroin, methamphetamine, or prescription opioids. Substance use was measured via self-report and social network analysis of participants' drug u

Quality over quantity - rethinking social participation in dementia prevention: results from the AgeWell.de trial.

BACKGROUND: Social participation as a protective factor against cognitive decline was one of the targets in the AgeWell.de study, a multi-domain interventional trial in a sample of older adults at increased risk for dementia. This study aimed to examine differential effects of the intervention and other influencing factors on social participation throughout the trial. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis of study data at the primary follow-up after 24 months (n = 819) was conducted. The Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6) was used to assess quantitative aspects of social networks, and self-repor

Social network support for individuals receiving opiate substitution treatment and its association with treatment progress.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Social networks have been hypothesized to protect people from the harmful effects of stress, but may also provide dysfunctional role models and provide cues associated with drug use. This study describes the range, type and level of social support available to patients engaged in UK opiate substitution treatment (OST) programmes, and explores the association between network factors and continued use of illicit heroin. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of a randomly selected sample of OST patients (n = 118) utilised measures of current substance use and social network structur

Later-life social network profiles of male war survivors in Vietnam: Implications for health behaviors.

Emerging research emphasizes early-life war exposure as a key determinant of later-life health in older adults from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet, the linkages between war exposure, social networks, and later-life health behaviors have received little attention. Using data from the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study, we investigate how early-life war experiences relate to the social networks and health behaviors of 1195 Vietnamese men aged 60+ who survived the Vietnam War (1965-1975). We utilize latent class analysis to identify men's network types and examine the associations

Contributions of the posterior cerebellum to mentalizing and social functioning: A transdiagnostic investigation.

BACKGROUND: Mentalizing-our ability to make inferences about the mental states of others-is impaired across psychiatric disorders and robustly associated with functional outcomes. Mentalizing deficits have been prominently linked to aberrant activity in cortical regions considered to be part of the "social brain network" (e.g., dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction), yet emerging evidence also suggests the importance of cerebellar dysfunction. In the present study-using a transdiagnostic, clinical psychiatric sample spanning the psychosis-autism-social anxiety spectrums-we ex

Nor weak ties, nor strong ties: Personal support networks and relations between autistic peers.

The aim of this study is to analyze egocentric social networks of 31 autistic adults in Québec (Canada). We examined the composition of their proximal personal support network and the role of support shared among autistic peers. A mixed method analysis was used. An egocentric network questionnaire that included qualitative prompts was conducted to gather participants' interpretations and reference systems, facilitating an understanding of networks' multidimensional aspect. A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted with a subset of the data from the qualitative prompts. Three main themes were

Structural Inequities and Social Networks Impact Hormone Use and Misuse Among Transgender Women in Los Angeles County.

In order to reduce gender dysphoria and combat stigma, transgender women often affirm their gender through social and medical transition, which may include cross-sex hormone therapy. This study examined associations between medically monitored hormone use and hormone misuse (non-prescribed hormone use including "fillers"), structural inequities (access to housing, health insurance, and income), and social network dynamics among 271 transgender women in Los Angeles. Hormone use status was coded trichotomously (hormone use, hormone misuse, no hormone use), and robust multinomial logistic regress

A Bayesian Framework for the Network Analysis of Transmission Dynamics in Infectious Disease.

Understanding the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases is critical for effective public health intervention. Traditional models often rely on simplifying assumptions that overlook the complexity of real-world contact patterns. In this study, we present an extended Bayesian framework that integrates genomic, temporal, and network data to reconstruct transmission networks with greater accuracy. By incorporating network structure as a prior, the model accounts for social and spatial proximity, allowing transmission probabilities to vary with contact or social distance. We further enhance

Social media use and early adolescent brain structure: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

Many adolescents initiate social media use during early adolescence, but the associations of early social media use with neurodevelopment have not been extensively studied. We utilized neuroimaging data from the U.S. Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to investigate the association of social media use (hours per day) or social media addiction (Social Media Addiction Questionnaire) with brain morphology in early adolescence. We analyzed data from 7,614 participants with high-quality structural MRI and complete covariate data at Year 2 (2018-2020, ages 10-13). In addition to pre

How Does Migration Affect HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Involuntary Bachelors? The Mediating Roles of Neighborhoods and Social Networks.

The sex ratio imbalance in China since the 1980s has resulted in a large number of involuntary bachelors in rural China. Previous studies have found an association between migration and HIV sexual risk behaviors among involuntary bachelors, but how migration affects these bachelors' HIV sexual risk behaviors remain poorly understood. Using data from a cross-sectional survey in 2017 (a sample of 740 male respondents who had rural household registration, had never been married, and were aged 28-49 years), we investigated the relationship between migration and HIV sexual risk behaviors. Alteration of resting-state functional connectivity network properties in patients with social anxiety disorder after virtual reality-based self-training.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a mental disorder characterized by excessive anxiety in social situations. This study aimed to examine the alteration of resting-state functional connectivity in SAD patients related to the virtual reality-based self-training (VRS) which enables exposure to social situations in a controlled environment. Fifty-two SAD patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group who received the VRS, or the control group who did not. Self-report questionnaires and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were performed to assess clinical symptoms a

The social network of international health aid.

International development assistance for health generates an emergent social network in which policy makers in recipient countries are connected to numerous bilateral and multilateral aid agencies and to other aid recipients. Ties in this global network are channels for the transmission of knowledge, norms and influence in addition to material resources, and policy makers in centrally situated governments receive information faster and are exposed to a more diverse range of sources and perspectives. Since diversity of perspectives improves problem-solving capacity, the structural position of a
