Social and structural determinants of health associated with drug use patterns among female sex workers in Iran: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) experience adversities regarding social determinants of health (SDH) and behavioural factors including illicit drug use. This study aimed to assess the clustered impact of SDH on illicit drug use among FSWs in Iran. METHODS: We surveyed 1,347 FSWs in 13 major cities in 2015. Latent class analysis was conducted to identify distinct classes of five measured SDH including low education, unemployment, unstable housing, last-year incarceration and sexual violence. We examined the association of these classes with five illicit drug use patterns using multivaria

Can social network analysis help to include marginalised young women in structural support programmes in Botswana? A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: In Botswana, one fifth of the adult population is infected with HIV, with young women most at risk. Structural factors such as poverty, poor education, strong gender inequalities and gender violence render many young women unable to act on choices to protect themselves from HIV. A national trial is testing an intervention to assist young women to access government programs for returning to education, and improving livelihoods. Accessing marginalised young women (aged 16-29 and not in education, employment or training) through door-to-door recruitment has proved inefficient. We inve

Experiences of structural vulnerability among exotic dancers in Baltimore, Maryland: Co-occurring social and economic antecedents of HIV/STI risk.

BACKGROUND: Women who grow up in economic scarcity often face limited opportunities for upward mobility, as a result of challenges securing stable housing, quality education, and steady employment. Chronic instability may limit the capacity of women to protect themselves against HIV/STI-related harm when engaging in sexual activity or drug use. Characterizing the structural contexts that facilitate HIV/STI risk among women are critical to effective design and implementation of drug and sexual harm reduction interventions. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were completed with 25 fem

Type 1 diabetes patients' experiences of, and need for, social support after attending a structured education programme: a qualitative longitudinal investigation.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore patients' experiences of, views about and need for, social support after attending a structured education programme for type 1 diabetes. BACKGROUND: Patients who attend structured education programmes attain short-term improvements in biomedical and quality-of-life measures but require support to sustain self-management principles over the longer term. Social support can influence patients' self-management practices; however, little is known about how programme graduates use other people's help. DESIGN: This study was informed by the principles of grounded the

Social and structural risks for HIV among migrant and immigrant men who have sex with men in Moscow, Russia: implications for prevention.

Moscow has a large population of immigrants and migrants from across the Former Soviet Union. Little is studied about men who have sex with men (MSM) within these groups. Qualitative research methods were used to explore identities, practices, and factors affecting HIV prevention and risks among immigrant/migrant MSM in Moscow. Nine interviews and three focus group discussions were conducted between April-June 2010 with immigrant/migrant MSM, analyzed as a subset of a larger population of MSM who participated in qualitative research (n=121). Participants were purposively selected men who repor

An approach of dual attention-driven multi-levelled graph neural architecture for rich-structural social graph analysis and representation learning.

In recent years, graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged as a dominant paradigm for learning from graph-structured data, achieving strong performance across a wide range of graph mining tasks, including node classification, clustering, and relational inference. Despite these advances, most existing GNN architectures primarily rely on message-passing mechanisms that aggregate smoothed high-order local neighborhood information. While effective for capturing local proximity patterns, such designs often struggle to model richer multi-level graph structures, particularly in scenarios where both f

Health Status in Informal Urban Settlements of Barishal, Bangladesh: Social Determinants, Environmental Risks, and Treatment-Seeking Behavior as Structural Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization in low- and middle-income countries has intensified health inequalities within informal settlements, yet empirical analyses often isolate behavioral factors from structural determinants. In Bangladesh, unplanned urban growth has produced vulnerable settlements where social inequalities intersect with infrastructural deficits, particularly in secondary coastal cities such as Barishal, a climate-sensitive region characterized by migration, poverty, and weak municipal capacity. AIM: This study examines the socio-demographic and socioeconomic patterning of self-repo

Building social and structural connections for the prevention of opioid use among youth experiencing homelessness: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are exposed to significant adversities while living on the street, and many experienced child abuse and neglect prior to leaving the home setting. Multiple social determinants of health (SDoH) are uniquely associated with youth homelessness, driving substance use and adverse mental health consequences. However, limited research has identified pragmatic interventions that have a long-term ameliorating impact on the complex, multi-symptomatic issues that YEH face. This study overcomes prior gaps in research through the testing of a multi-componen

County-Level Associations Between Structural Inequalities in Social Determinants of Health and Stroke Prevalence Among U.S. Adults: An Ecologic Study.

INTRODUCTION: Women and racial minority groups bear a disproportionate burden of stroke. Stroke disparities have been partially explained by gender and race differences in individual-level SES and neighborhood-level education and residential segregation. This study explored whether structural sexism and structural racism, operationalized as structural inequalities between gender groups and between race-ethnic groups across multiple social determinants of health at the county level, could be contributors by investigating their associations with stroke prevalence. METHODS: County-level age-adju

Guideline-Concordant Provision of Extended Prophylaxis for Venous Thromboembolism After Major Cancer Surgery Differs by Social and Structural Determinants of Health.

IntroductionPatients undergoing major cancer surgery face an increased risk of venous thromboembolism. Despite guidelines recommending extended pharmacologic prophylaxis for 30 days after surgery, adoption remains low. Differences in adherence to guidelines for extended prophylaxis based on social and structural determinants of health have not been examined, but if present, may contribute to observed disparities in cancer surgery outcomes.MethodsA single-center retrospective cohort study was performed to identify patients undergoing major gastrointestinal, gynecologic, or urologic cancer resec

Social and structural determinants associated with the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among female commercial sex workers in Dhaka City, Bangladesh.

Female commercial sex workers (FCSWs) bear higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among key populations. The association of structural determinants and STIs among FCSWs was not at the forefront of research earlier in Bangladesh. This study examined how structural factors correlate with the prevalence of STIs at physical/social/economic/policy levels among FCSWs in Dhaka city. 495 FCSWs were screened for HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis. Structural variables (Individual risks, high-risk sexual behaviors, work environments) were extracted from the previous multi-level study on FCSW

Attrition and social vulnerability during 2-year-long structured care in type 2 diabetes, the ERMIES randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes self-management education is exposed to attrition from services and structured ambulatory care. However, knowledge about factors related to attrition in educational programs remains limited. The context of social vulnerability due to low income may interfere. The aim of this study was to identify the sociodemographic, clinical, psychometric, and lifestyle factors associated with attrition from the ERMIES multicentre randomized parallel controlled trial (RCT) that was interrupted due to the combination of both slow inclusion and high attrition. METHODS: The ERMIES trial wa

Comparing the Effectiveness of Brain Structural Imaging, Resting-state fMRI, and Naturalistic fMRI in Recognizing Social Anxiety Disorder in Children and Adolescents.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common anxiety disorder in childhood and adolescence. Studies on SAD in adults have reported both structural and functional aberrancies of the brain at the group level. However, evidence has shown differences in anxiety-related brain abnormalities between adolescents and adults. Since children and adolescents can afford limited scan time, optimizing the scan tasks is essential for SAD research in children and adolescents. Thus, we need to address whether brain structure, resting-state fMRI, and naturalistic imaging enable individualized identification of SAD

Understanding the psycho-social context for a new early intervention for resistance to change that aims to strike a beneficial balance between structure and flexibility.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioural problems linked to changes to expectations - resistance to change - are linked to disability in neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Prader-Willi (PWS) and fragile X syndromes (FXS). Structuring routines is best practice for minimising current resistance to change. But complete structure is impractical and flexibility in early life may actually reduce later resistance by supporting cognitive development. We aimed to examine the psycho-social context of families with children at risk of developing resistance to change so a

Pattern of structural brain changes in social anxiety disorder after cognitive behavioral group therapy: a longitudinal multimodal MRI study.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fears of social and performance situations. Cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) has in general positive effects on symptoms, distress and avoidance in SAD. Prior studies found increased cortical volumes and decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) in SAD compared with healthy controls (HCs). Thirty-three participants diagnosed with SAD attended in a 10-week CBGT and were scanned before and after therapy. We applied three neuroimaging methods-surface-based morphometry, diffusion tensor imaging and network-based statistics-each with specific lo
