Medical informatics and the concept of disease.

This paper attempts to address the general question whether information technologies, as applied in the area of medicine and health care, have or are likely to change fundamental concepts regarding disease and health. After a short excursion into the domain of medical informatics I provide a brief overview of some of the current theories of what a disease is from a more philosophical perspective, i.e. the "value free" and "value laden" view of disease. Next, I consider at some length, whether health care informatics is currently modifying fundamental concepts of disease. To this question I wil

Looking forward: using a sociocultural perspective to reframe the study of learning disabilities. VODD group.

The purpose of this series has been to invite educators involved with individuals with learning disabilities to look through other lenses and listen to other voices. In this article, the authors use a sociocultural perspective of teaching and learning, based on cultural-historical and activity theory, to synthesize the articles of this series and to project where inquiry in the field of learning disabilities might be headed. A model is used to organize the discussion and help illuminate the sociocultural nature of the pathways of ideas, expectations, and activities that either foster or hinder

Science, philosophy, and society: some recent books.

The essay discusses a number of issues developed in several recent books on philosophical and ethical problems in the natural sciences, both pure (especially biology) and applied (especially medicine). The scaffolding of the discussion can be outlined as follows: Science is most coherently portrayed as a set of activities through which societies deal with a distinctive, but continually evolving set of interwoven practical, empirical, and conceptual problems. Consequently, approaches which attempt to delineate universal features of "scientific methods" or to depict the sciences as providing an

Value-Based Health Care in Undergraduate Medical Education.

PROBLEM: Value-based health care (VBHC) is an innovative framework for redesigning care delivery to achieve better outcomes for patients and reduce cost; however, providing students with the skills to understand and engage with these topics is a challenge to medical educators. APPROACH: Here, the authors present a novel, VBHC curriculum integrated into a required course for post-core clerkship students-launched in 2018 at Harvard Medical School and taught in conjunction with Harvard Business School faculty-that highlights key principles of VBHC most relevant to undergraduate medical education

A Dilemma of Dogma: Specifying the Personality Root of Sexual Prejudice.

The current study integrated prior research demonstrating 1) a mediational process by which the Five-Factor Model personality factor Openness to Experience, transmitted through right-wing authoritarian ideology, predicts sexual prejudice and 2) that the Five-Factor Model personality facet Openness to Values may be the more precise personality root of this process. Participants were 79 college students who completed a comprehensive measure of Five-Factor Model personality factors and facets and other relevant measures. Results supported hypotheses. In particular, facet-level Openness to Values

Value correlates of ambivalent attitudes toward gender relations.

This study related measures of hostile sexism, benevolent sexism, hostility toward men, and benevolence toward men to value priorities. It was predicted that these variables would be positively related to the importance of power values for self and negatively related to universalism and benevolence values and that measures of benevolent sexism and benevolence toward men would be positively related to tradition values and negatively related to self-direction values. These predictions were supported in a study in which student participants in Adelaide, South Australia, completed the Glick and Fi

Reference data for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: what results are equivalent to the established limits of office blood pressure?

In 1039 subjects ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed to define threshold values, which are equivalent to the established limits of the office blood pressure. Mean values and proportions of elevated single readings were correlated to office blood pressure by regression analyses. To avoid impact of varying sleeping periods on 24 h blood pressure, only daytime readings were considered. Correlations between average daytime blood pressure and office blood pressure were linear: Mean daytime values of 135 mmHg (systolic) and of 84 mmHg (diastolic) were equivalent to the casual blood pr

Focal stimulation of the temporoparietal junction improves rationality in prosocial decision-making.

We tested the hypothesis that modulation of neurocomputational inputs to value-based decision-making affects the rationality of economic choices. The brain's right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) has been functionally associated with both social behavior and with domain-general information processing and attention. To identify the causal function of rTPJ in prosocial decisions, we administered focal high definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) while participants allocated money between themselves and a charity in a modified dictator game. Anodal stimulation led to improved

Exploration of the relationship between social cognition and PTSD using data from the ALSPAC cohort.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Previous studies have shown an association between social cognition (emotion recognition, social perception, attributional style, and mentalization) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but there have been no longitudinal studies on this topic. We hypothesize that childhood social cognitive differences are associated with subsequent trauma exposure and PTSD. STUDY DESIGN: Data from the Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used. The Social Communications Disorder Checklist (SCDC) at age 7.5 years, the Diagnostic Analysis of Non-Verbal Accura

Responding to Suffering:Development Course and Social Dimensions of Palliative Care.

A review of the development course of palliative care reveals that its goal of alleviating suffering determines the indispensability of the social dimension in this field. As palliative care emerges in response to the general trends such as aging and disease spectrum changes of social development,it naturally becomes one of the key solutions to social issues including the difficulties in caregiving and hospitalization for end-of-life patients.Beyond its social value, the comprehensiveness and localization of care emphasized by palliative care also require the support and intervention of theoreti

Estimation of Societal Values of Health States Preferences at the National Level for Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

OBJECTIVES: Social preference values of health states are a fundamental input for the preparation of studies in health economics. Several countries have undertaken studies to obtain these values. Our objective was to conduct a structured and systematic literature review of articles that calculates this set of representative values at the national level in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: In this systematic review, we searched the Embase, MEDLINE, Ovid, SciELO, and LILACS databases, among others, for studies published up to June 2022 that estimated nationally representative h

Risk for marijuana-related problems among college students: an application of zero-inflated negative binomial regression.

METHOD: This study examined the association between marijuana-related problems and social norms, impulsivity, and perceived use utility among 292 college students. Zero-inflated negative binomial regression was used to simultaneously predict expected nonusers as well as predict counts of reported marijuana-related problems among expected users. Gender, social norms, impulsivity, and perceived use utility were used to predict expected nonusers as well as number of marijuana-related problems among expected users. RESULTS: Only social norms were associated with the prediction of zero-values. In

"He cares about me and I care about him." Children's experiences of friendship with peers who use AAC.

Typically developing children face multiple challenges in developing friendships with peers who have severe physical disabilities and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), especially when these peers experience restrictions in mobility, educational participation, physical access, and communication. In this small qualitative study, six typically developing children were interviewed about their friendships with classmates who have cerebral palsy and use AAC. Data were analyzed according to Riessman's narrative methodology (2008). Overall, participants viewed these friendships pos

Association Between Frequency of Social Contact and Brain Atrophy in Community-Dwelling Older People Without Dementia: The JPSC-AD Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic evidence has shown that social isolation, a low frequency of social contact with others, is associated with the risk of dementia and late-life depressive symptoms. Therefore, we hypothesized that low frequency of social contact may be involved in brain atrophy, and depressive symptoms may play some role in this relationship. We aimed to evaluate the association between low frequency of social contact and the volumes of various brain regions and to assess the extent to which depressive symptoms mediate these relationships from a large population-based mu

Coping Strategies Utilized by Middle-Aged and Older Latino Caregivers of Loved Ones with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia.

We aimed to explore the coping strategies utilized by Latino caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia (ADRD). We conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with Latinos family caregivers. The interviews explored the caregivers' experiences utilizing coping strategies. Coping strategies were identified based on a direct content analysis of the interviews. Participants were 50 to 75 years old, majority female, and from Mexico. The most common coping strategies adopted were: rationalization, social interactions, physical activity, and leisure activities. Other strategies use

Mental illness in India and Britain: theory and practice.

The paper argues that conceptions of mental illness and its treatment often stem from the normative social and cultural constructions of mental illness. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and other health professionals do not work in a social vacuum; they work within the accepted traditions and values prevalent in their culture. To understand mental illness it is therefore necessary to examine the salient normative beliefs, attitudes, and values of a given culture. The paper proposes a cross-cultural theoretical and empirical model which permits a close examination and comparison of mental illness

Adolescent alcohol use: social determinants and the case for early family-centered prevention. Family-focused prevention of adolescent drinking.

The family plays a central role in the use of alcohol by children and adolescents, yet preventive interventions rarely focus on the family. Early drinking and much subsequent use of alcohol by children and adolescents is sanctioned and sometimes encouraged by their families. Unlike experimentation with alcohol, problem drinking is associated with low levels of family social support and with dysfunctional coping strategies of families that may lead children to use drinking as an adaptive behavior. While risk-factor research has advanced understanding of alcohol use by children and youth, the po

Change your attitude. The role of affective social learning in shaping individual attitudes toward their environment.

Traditional accounts of cognitive development often portray children as solitary learners, primarily engaged in epistemic discovery through observation or reasoning. However, given their deep dependence on others, children must also make sense of the norms and values that are important to their social group. This paper explores the role of affective social learning in shaping individual attitudes - understood as emotional stances toward objects, behaviors or norms - throughout development. Drawing on philosophy, social psychology and developmental science, we conceptualize attitudes as emotion

Perceived relational evaluation as a predictor of self-esteem and mood in people with a psychotic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: There is evidence that social support predicts self-esteem and related moods for people with psychotic disorders. However, there has been little investigation of relative importance of specific components of social support. Evidence from social psychology suggests that perceived relational evaluation (PRE) or the extent to which people see others as valuing them, is a particularly important determinant of self-esteem and mood. Our study compared the importance of PRE and other types of social support, in predicting self-esteem and depressive mood, anxiety, and anger-hostility in a s
