Application of chitosan- and alginate-modified biochars in promoting the resistance to paddy soil acidification and immobilization of soil cadmium.

To develop more green, practical and efficient biochar amendments for acidic soils, chitosan-modified biochar (CRB) and alginate-modified biochar (ARB) were prepared, and their effects on promoting soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC) and immobilizing cadmium (Cd) in the paddy soils were investigated through indoor incubation experiments. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Boehm titration indicated that the introduction of chitosan and sodium alginate effectively amplified the functional groups of the biochar, and improved acid buffering capacity of the biochar. Since ther

Unravelling the interactive effect of soil and atmospheric mercury influencing mercury distribution and accumulation in the soil-rice system.

Mercury (Hg) accumulation in rice is an emerging health concern worldwide. However, sources and interactions responsible for Hg species accumulation in different rice tissues are still uncertain. Four experimental plots were carefully designed at an artisanal Hg mining site and a control site to evaluate the effect of atmospheric and soil Hg contents on Hg accumulation in rice. We showed that inorganic Hg (IHg) contents in rice tissues grown either in contaminated or control site soil (non-contaminated soil) were higher at Hg artisanal mining site than those at the control site. Elevated total

Soil amendment as a strategy for the growth of young vines when replanting vineyards in soils with high copper content.

Soil contamination with copper (Cu)-based agrochemicals used in vineyards for pest control is a growing problem. In this context, the application of soil amendment to limit Cu toxicity, especially for young plants after the replanting of vineyards, has been a concern for winemakers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate how different amendments can contribute to the decrease in Cu availability in areas vocated to viticulture. Furthermore, the aim was to evaluate to the effect of Cu on the biochemical and physiological changes in the development of the young vine plants, both at the

Effects of forest conversion on soil microbial communities depend on soil layer on the eastern Tibetan Plateau of China.

Forest land-use changes have long been suggested to profoundly affect soil microbial communities. However, how forest type conversion influences soil microbial properties remains unclear in Tibetan boreal forests. The aim of this study was to explore variations of soil microbial profiles in the surface organic layer and subsurface mineral soil among three contrasting forests (natural coniferous forest, NF; secondary birch forest, SF and spruce plantation, PT). Soil microbial biomass, activity and community structure of the two layers were investigated by chloroform fumigation, substrate respir

Evaluation of the bioavailability of the herbicide prosulfocarb through adsorption on soils and model soil colloids, and through a simple bioassay.

Adsorption isotherms of prosulfocarb were determined on soils with different physicochemical properties. The extent of adsorption increased with the organic carbon content, but the results also suggested the involvement of some inorganic soil surfaces. In order better to understand the role of each soil surface, adsorption-desorption isotherms were determined on model soil colloids consisting of a soil humic acid, a montmorillonite, a synthetic aluminium hydroxide and their associations. The highest adsorption was observed on the humic acid, but it was also confirmed that the montmorillonite i

Contrasting tree growth and soil organic carbon across stand densities in a Picea crassifolia plantation: associations with soil nitrogen.

INTRODUCTION: Stand density can influence both tree growth and belowground carbon storage in plantations, but density conditions favorable for these two functions may not necessarily coincide. METHODS: We investigated a Picea crassifolia plantation in the Qilian Mountains under five stand-density conditions with nominal initial densities of approximately 4,444, 2,500, 2,000, 3,333, and 2,667 stems ha⁻¹. Each treatment comprised three spatially independent replicate stands, with three 50 × 50 m quadrats established within each stand, resulting in nine quadrat-level observations per treatment.

Microplastics reduce soil CO2 emissions and enhance soil organic carbon preservation by promoting aggregate formation in microplastics-biochar system.

Microplastics (MPs) have been shown to produce a significant effect on soil ecology. The effects of MPs on soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization and preservation, however, remain poorly understood, especially in systems that also contain biochar. We conducted a 100-day indoor soil incubation experiment to address this knowledge gap. Our results exhibit that the addition of reed straw biochar (RBC) alone led to a significant increase in soil CO2 emissions (4.36%) relative to the control. In comparison, co-adding either polylactic acid (PLA) or polyethylene (PE) MPs with RBC pronouncedly inhi

Soil flushing for remediation of landfill leachate-contaminated soil: A comprehensive evaluation of optimal flushing agents and influencing factors.

Screening the appropriate agent is essential to enhancing the effectiveness of soil flushing techniques in remediating landfill leachate contaminated soil. To identify effective flushing agents for leachate-contaminated soil and determine optimal conditions for their use, this study evaluated five surfactants and three chelating agents. These agents were analyzed through batch experiments and one-dimensional column tests to assess the effects of pH, temperature, solid-liquid ratio, and injection conditions on their efficacy. The findings revealed that saponin, known for its high degradability,

Impact of pesticides on soil health: identification of key soil microbial indicators for ecotoxicological assessment strategies through meta-analysis.

Pesticides remain a cornerstone of modern agriculture. Despite their key role, it is well documented that pesticides can have considerable off-target effects on a range of organisms. The effects of pesticides on soil health, and more importantly on soil microbiota, are currently not well addressed at the regulatory level, despite cumulative evidence for the pivotal role of the soil microbiota on ecosystem functioning. Here, we use a meta-analysis to assess the effects of pesticides on soil health parameters identifying key biological indicators for environmental risk assessment analysis. We de

Milk vetch returning combined with lime materials alleviates soil cadmium contamination and improves rice quality in soil-rice system.

Milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) returning and lime materials is employed as an effective strategy for remediating cadmium (Cd)-contaminated paddy fields. However, the combined effects of them on alleviating Cd pollution and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly explored. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of these combined treatments on soil properties, iron oxides, iron plaque, mineral elements, and amino acids through a field experiment. The following treatments were employed: lime (LM), limestone (LS), milk vetch (MV), MV + LM (MVLM), and MV + LS (MVLS), and a control (CK) g

Environmental fate and metabolic transformation of two non-ionic pesticides in soil: Effect of biochar, moisture, and soil sterilization.

Soil moisture, organic matter, and soil microbes are the key considering factors that control the persistence, degradation, and transformation of applied pesticides under varied soil conditions. In this study, underlying influence of these factors was assessed through the fates and metabolic transformation of two non-ionic pesticides (e.g., Phorate and Terbufos) in soils. Concisely, two distinct experiments including a customized batch equilibrium (sorption study), and a lab incubation trial (degradation study) were performed, following the OECD guidelines. As per study findings, biochar (BC)

Short-Term Soil Flushing with Tannic Acid and Its Effect on Metal Mobilization and Selected Properties of Calcareous Soil.

Cadmium, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn removal via soil flushing with tannic acid (TA) as a plant biosurfactant was studied. The soil was treated for 30 h in a column reactor at a constant TA concentration and pH (3%, pH 4) and at variable TA flow rates (0.5 mL/min or 1 mL/min). In the soil leachates, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved organic carbon, and metal concentrations were monitored. Before and after flushing, soil pH, EC, organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were determined. To analyze the organic matter composition, pyrolysis as well as thermally assisted hy

Effect of antibiotic type and vegetable species on antibiotic accumulation in soil-vegetable system, soil microbiota, and resistance genes.

Antibiotic accumulation in soil and plants is an escalating problem in agriculture and is receiving increasing attention. However, the effect of plant species on the fate of different types of antibiotics in a soil-vegetable system and soil resistome has not been adequately explored. To this end, greenhouse pot experiments were conducted to simulate contamination by ciprofloxacin (CIP), oxytetracycline (OTC), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), and tylosin (TY) at 1 mg kg-1 in the soils in which cabbage, endive, and spinach were grown. We investigated antibiotic persistence in soils and accumulation in ve

Effect of Straw Amendment on Soil Zn Availability and Ageing of Exogenous Water-Soluble Zn Applied to Calcareous Soil.

Organic matter plays a key role in availability and transformation of soil Zn (zinc), which greatly controls Zn concentrations in cereal grains and human Zn nutrition level. Accordingly, soils homogenized with the wheat straw (0, 12 g straw kg-1) and Zn fertilizer (0, 7 mg Zn kg-1) were buried and incubated in the field over 210 days to explore the response of soil Zn availability and the ageing of exogenous Zn to straw addition. Results indicated that adding straw alone scarcely affected soil DTPA-Zn concentration and Zn fractions because of the low Zn concentration of wheat straw and the hig

Bioavailability of slowly cycling soil phosphorus: major restructuring of soil P fractions over four decades in an aggrading forest.

Although low solubility and slow cycling control P circulation in a wide range of ecosystems, most studies that evaluate bioavailability of soil P use only indices of short-term supply. The objective here is to quantify changes in P fractions in an Ultisol during the growth of an old-field pine forest from 1957 to 2005, specifically changes with organic P (Po) and with inorganic P (Pi) associated with Fe and Al oxides as well as Ca compounds. Changes in soil P were estimated from archived mineral soil samples collected in 1962 shortly after pine seedlings were planted, and on six subsequent oc

Sorption kinetics and leachability of heavy metal from the contaminated soil amended with immobilizing agent (humus soil and hydroxyapatite).

Release of heavy metals onto the soil as a result of agricultural and industrial activities may pose a serious threat to the environment. This study investigated the kinetics of sorption of heavy metals on the non-humus soil amended with (1:3) humus soil and 1% hydroxyapatite used for in situ immobilization and leachability of heavy metals from these soils. For this, a batch equilibrium experiment was performed to evaluate metal sorption in the presence of 0.05 M KNO(3) background electrolyte solutions. The Langmuir isotherms applied for sorption studies showed that the amount of metal sorbed

Advances in research on petroleum biodegradability in soil.

With the increased demand for petroleum and petroleum products from all parts of the society, environmental pollution caused by petroleum development and production processes is becoming increasingly serious. Soil pollution caused by petroleum seriously affects environmental quality in addition to human lives and productivity. At present, petroleum in soil is mainly degraded by biological methods. In their natural state, native bacteria in the soil spontaneously degrade petroleum pollutants that enter the soil; however, when the pollution levels increase, the degradation rates decrease, and it
