Borderline personality disorder and stigma: Lived experience perspectives on helpful and hurtful language.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental health disorder that is subject to significant stigmatisation. With language being a key reinforcer of stigma, this co-produced study aims to explore the language use regarding BPD and its effect on those with BPD and carers. Recommendations to reduce stigmatisation are provided for both clinicians and researchers. Participants with BPD (consumer n = 33) and those supporting someone with BPD (carer n = 30) discussed their experience of hurtful and helpful language. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse written and verbal respon

Adapting language models for mental health analysis on social media.

In recent years, there has been a growing research interest focused on identifying traces of mental disorders through social media analysis. These disorders significantly impair millions of individuals' cognitive and behavioral functions worldwide. Our study aims to advance the understanding of four prevalent mental disorders: Anorexia, Depression, Gambling, and Self-harm. We present a comprehensive framework designed for the domain adaptation of models to analyze and identify signs of these conditions on social media posts. The language models' adapting strategy consisted of three key stages.

A fuzzy cognitive map approach to differential diagnosis of specific language impairment.

This paper presents a computer-based model for differential diagnosis of specific language impairment (SLI), a language disorder that, in many cases, cannot be easily diagnosed. This difficulty necessitates the development of a methodology to assist the speech therapist in the diagnostic process. The methodology tool is based on fuzzy cognitive maps and constitutes a qualitative and quantitative computer model comprised of the experience and knowledge of specialists. The development of the model was based on knowledge from the literature and then it was successfully tested on four clinical cas

Bridging the Gap Between Language and Literacy: Evidence from Interventions in Young Greek-Speaking Children with Developmental Language Disorder.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent difficulties in language acquisition, affecting both comprehension and production, and typically emerging in early childhood through deficits in morphosyntax, vocabulary and phonology. Although distinct from Specific Learning Disabilities, particularly in reading, the two conditions often co-occur, sharing underlying mechanisms and leading to overlapping challenges such as impaired phonological processing, limited vocabulary, weak narrative skills, and reading comprehension difficulties. This st

Deficient language acquisition in children with single suture craniosynostosis and deformational posterior plagiocephaly.

PURPOSE: This study examined early language acquisition in children with single suture craniosynostosis (SSC) and in children with deformational posterior plagiocephaly. Our purpose was to determine whether infants with SSC have normal language acquisition at the age of 3 years, and whether infants with deformational posterior plagiocephaly demonstrate parallel development when compared with children with SSC. METHODS: The study population includes 61 infants. Twenty of them had synostosis of the sagittal suture, 12 synostosis of other suture and 29 deformational posterior plagiocephaly. Fort

Evaluation of emotional and behavioral problems in language impaired children using the Child Behavior Checklist.

Speech and language impaired children are at special risk for developing psychiatric disorders. Attention deficit, aggressive behaviour as well as overanxiety and excessive shyness have been reported in speech and language impaired children. The purpose of this study was to determine how the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) could be used as a screening instrument in language impaired children. In a sample of 83 language impaired children, emotional and behavioural problems were evaluated using the CBCL. Independent of this assessment, DSM-IV diagnoses were established for all children. Sixty-si

Developmental dyslexia: A new look at clinical features and brain mechanisms.

Developmental dyslexia is the commonest "specific learning disorder" (DSM-5) or "developmental learning disorder with impairment in reading" (ICD-11). This impairment in reading acquisition is related to a defect in the installation of cognitive precursors necessary to master the grapheme-phoneme conversion. Its origin is largely genetic, but many environmental factors seem capable of modulating symptom intensity. Three types of presentation, roughly equal in occurrence, are useful to distinguish according to the associated disorders (language, attentional, and/or motor coordination), thus sug

[A study of autism spectrum disorders and language disorders using magnetoencephalography. The scientific contribution of Dr. Muñoz Yunta].

INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterised by the alteration of three basic areas of behaviour, qualitative alterations in reciprocal social interaction, qualitative alterations in communication and patterns of behaviour, and stereotyped, repetitive and restrictive activities and interests. Specific language impairment (SLI) is a disorder in which language is slow and retarded with respect to the patient's chronological age, and which is not related to a sensory-auditory or motor deficit or to a pervasive developmental disorder. In both disorders, epilepsy

Using mismatch negativity to study central auditory processing in developmental language and literacy impairments: where are we, and where should we be going?

A popular theoretical account of developmental language and literacy disorders implicates poor auditory temporal processing in their etiology, but evidence from studies using behavioral measures has yielded inconsistent results. The mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the auditory event-related potential has been recommended as an alternative, relatively objective, measure of the brain's ability to discriminate sounds that is suitable for children with limited attention or motivation. A literature search revealed 26 studies of the MMN in individuals with dyslexia or specific language impair

Toward explainable AI (XAI) for mental health detection based on language behavior.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in general and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in particular are paving the new way forward for the automated detection and prediction of mental health disorders among the population. Recent research in this area has prioritized predictive accuracy over model interpretability by relying on deep learning methods. However, prioritizing predictive accuracy over model interpretability can result in a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, which is critical in sensitive applications such as healthcare. There is thus a growing need for explain

Supporting adjective learning by children with Developmental Language Disorder: Enhancing metalinguistic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Adjectives are essential for communication, conceptual development and academic success. However, they are semantically and syntactically complex and can be particularly challenging for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Surprisingly, language interventions have not typically focused on this important word class. AIMS: (1) To provide a supportive and accessible primer on adjectives for practitioners; (2) to explore how the SHAPE CODINGTM system can be adapted to support adjective learning in DLD; and (3) to provide practical recommendations on how to support adje

Sex differences in early brain development in a multi-site ASD likelihood cohort.

Biological sex is increasingly recognized as a fundamental dimension of brain organization, yet how it influences early neurodevelopment, particularly autism spectrum disorder (ASD), remains understudied. Using data from the International Infant EEG Data Integration Platform (EEG-IP), a multi-site longitudinal cohort of 179 infants (91 males, 88 females) at elevated (ELA) and typical (TLA) likelihood of ASD, we conducted a series of re-analyses of previously published EEG studies to examine whether key EEG metrics differ by biological sex and whether biological sex can moderate the relationshi

Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) in etiologically diverse developmental conditions: A systematic review.

The MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) are widely used parent-report tools for assessing early language development, including gesture use, expressive and receptive vocabulary, and early morpho-syntactic capacities. While originally developed for typically developing children aged 8 up to 36 months and aimed at detecting developmental language disorder, CDIs have been increasingly applied in studies of neurodevelopmental and genetic conditions, where language development often diverges from typical trajectories. In this review, we synthesize literature on the use of C

Behind the Scenes of Developmental Language Disorder: Time to Call Neuropsychology Back on Stage.

Although the Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), also known as Specific Language Impairment in children has been the focus of unceasing scientific attention for decades, the nature and mechanisms of this disorder remain unclear. Most importantly, we still cannot reliably identify children requiring urgent intervention among other 'late talkers' at an early age and understand the high prevalence of comorbidity with psychiatric phenomena such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. One of the main reasons for this is the traditional 'diagnosis-by-exclusion,' resulting in heterogeneity of the DLD populat

Striving for health equity: Stigmatizing language in inpatient pharmacy notes - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: As pharmacy evolves, pharmacists have an increasing role in documentation. Publications examining the actions of other health professionals show that negative perception in written notes translates to patients receiving lower quality of care, resulting in worse health outcomes, suggesting that the use of stigmatizing language towards patients has concerning consequences. OBJECTIVES: To identify the prevalence of stigmatizing language in inpatient pharmacy progress. notes based on patient specific characteristics and diagnoses. METHODS: This retrospective pilot study reviewed inpa

Autism Phenotypes in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex: Diagnostic and Treatment Considerations.

Tuberous sclerosis complex is a multisystem, chronic genetic condition characterized by systemic growth of benign tumors and often accompanied by epilepsy, autism spectrum disorders, and intellectual disability. Nonetheless, the neurodevelopmental phenotype of these patients is not often detailed. The authors describe 3 individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex who share common characteristics that can help to identify a distinct profile of autism spectrum disorder. These findings include typical cognitive development, expressive and pragmatic language deficits, and anxiety. The authors also
