This study quantifies metal concentrations in washed and unwashed feathers of feral pigeons (Columba livia). The material was collected in two different sites: Goiânia (capital of Goiás State), with high anthropic activities, and Jataí (a city in Goiás), with low anthropic activities. Tunable diode laser atomic absorption spectroscopy (DLAAS) combined with separation techniques and atomization in plasmas and flames is presented as a powerful method for analysis of molecular species. The analysis of recently grown hair for zinc provides a biomarker of recent zinc status. Seasonal variation of zinc in hair has been demonstrated in children. The aim of this study was to investigate whether on a month-by- month basis there is a seasonal variation in hair zinc concentration in an apparently well-nourished adult population in New Zealand. It was hypothesized that increased hours of daylight would be associated with an increase in zinc concentration in hair. Thirty-four subjects (20 F, 14 M) aged 18-54 yr had occipital hair sampled at monthly intervals between June and December.

Two groups of women with missed abortion examined in different periods of time were included in the study--the first group of 43 patients was examined in 1989-1990 and the second group of 24 in 1994. The control group consist of 73 women in the first trimester of normal pregnancy and 75 nonpregnant women. The serum copper concentration of the first group with missed abortion (19.47 +/- 4.62 mumol/l) was significantly (p < 0.001) lower than those of control group with normal pregnancy (23.40 +/- 5.10 mumol/l). Baker's yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were successfully used to selectively separate methylmercury and Hg(II). Several parameters affecting the degree of biosorption and the binding kinetics of methylmercury and Hg(II) were evaluated: solution pH, temperature, incubation time, amount of biomass and analyte, and presence of foreign ions. We present a sample preparation method for measuring magnesium in individual whole lymphocytes by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. We use Burkitt's lymphoma cells in culture as the test sample and compare X-ray microanalysis of individual cells with atomic absorption analysis of pooled cell populations.
