User Experience and Satisfaction With a Web-Based Application to Improve Intelligibility in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Motor speech impairments, such as hypokinetic dysarthria, are highly prevalent among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). These voice and speech deficits may significantly impact speech intelligibility, leading many individuals with PD to withdraw socially. Digital platforms may provide a feasible way to address motor speech impairments in this population while also fostering patients' self-management skills through independent home-based practice. The objective of this preliminary one-group pre-post treatment study is to provide a qualitative examination of partic

Generalization of deep neural-network based noise reduction to accented-English speecha).

The current study involved the ability of deep-learning based noise reduction to generalize to accented-English speech. The deep neural network (DNN) was trained using a large number of different speakers (and different noises) of primarily standard native American English. This model was used to remove background noise from speech produced by 88 speakers having 9 different native-language backgrounds, who spoke English as a second language. The resulting speech was characterized by accents strong enough to substantially affect intelligibility. Objective measures of intelligibility, which refl

[Validation of an automatic speech analysis in children with isolated cleft palate].

BACKGROUND: Following surgical repair of cleft lip and palate, hearing and speech and language development are important issues for the continued care of affected childhood and adolescent patients. Therefore, PEAKS (Program for Evaluation and Analysis of all Kinds of Speech Disorders) was developed in order to rate speech intelligibility automatically and reduce the time required for diagnostics. PEAKS is based on a speech recognition system and was extended to incorporate a speaker model. This investigation validated PEAKS for isolated cleft palate. METHODS: From each of the 39 children with

Articulatory dimensions of hearing-impaired speakers' intelligibility: evidence from a time-related aerodynamic, acoustic, and electroglottographic study.

Regression and principal components analyses were employed to study the relationship between 30 aerodynamic speech parameters and the speech intelligibility of 40 severely to profoundly hearing-impaired speakers. Regression analysis on the original 30 aerodynamic variables revealed that speech intelligibility was predicted by a cognate-pair voice onset-time difference measure and a measure of the stability of the volume-velocity rise time. Principal components analysis of the 30 independent variables derived seven factors that accounted for 84.3% of the variance in the original 30 parameters.

Diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders in children with Moebius syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome (MS) is characterized by congenital bilateral paralysis of the facial and abducens nerves. Clinical features include feeding problems, dysarthria, dysphagia, sialorrhea, strabismus, and lack of facial expression. Patients with MS frequently present with dysphagia during infancy. Further on during childhood a severe speech disorder is a common feature. However, articulation deficits in patients with MS are scarcely reported in the related scientific literature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe speech deviations, intelligibility and sialorrhea in pati

Application of a Landmark-Based Method for Acoustic Analysis of Dysphonic Speech.

AIM: Speakers with dysphonia often report difficulty with maintaining intelligibility in noisy environments; however, there is no objective method for characterizing this difficulty. Landmark-based analysis is a linguistically-motived, knowledge-based speech analysis technique, which may serve as the basis of acoustic tool for describing the intelligibility deficit. As the first step toward development of such a tool, this study examined whether Landmark-based analysis could describe acoustic differences between normal and dysphonic speech. METHOD: The recordings subjected to the Landmark-bas

Comparing token-based and trajectory-based vowel space metrics for assessing speech in Parkinson's disease.

This study assessed the ability of three acoustic measures of vowel space, two token-based and one trajectory-based, to quantify speech differences in people with Parkinson's disease compared to controls and correlations with speech intelligibility. Fifty-six speakers (28 people with Parkinson's and 28 controls) read a custom reading passage containing corner vowels. For token-based measures, the triangular vowel space area (tVSA) in kHz2 and the unitless ratio of vowel articulation index (VAI) were calculated. For the trajectory-based measure, the articulatory-acoustic vowel space (AAVS) in k

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of personalized and home-based speech therapy on quality of life, intelligibility, and social participation for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) who have a reduced intelligibility of speech. BACKGROUND: Speech problems in PD have a profound negative impact on social interaction and quality of life. Evidence for speech therapy in PD is growing, but more work remains needed to explore its full potential. Efficacy exists for highly intensive standardized speech treatment programs, but not all patients can comply with this rather intense intervention,

An acoustic study of Cantonese alaryngeal speech in different speaking conditions.

Esophageal (ES) speech, tracheoesophageal (TE) speech, and the electrolarynx (EL) are common methods of communication following the removal of the larynx. Our recent study demonstrated that intelligibility may increase for Cantonese alaryngeal speakers using clear speech (CS) compared to their everyday "habitual speech" (HS), but the reasoning is still unclear [Hui, Cox, Huang, Chen, and Ng (2022). Folia Phoniatr. Logop. 74, 103-111]. The purpose of this study was to assess the acoustic characteristics of vowels and tones produced by Cantonese alaryngeal speakers using HS and CS. Thirty-one al

Volume and location of the defect as predictors of speech outcome after glossectomy: correlation with a classification.

The evaluation of speech outcomes after resection and reconstruction of the oral tongue remains largely unsystematic. A cross-sectional study was performed to analyse the speech outcomes of patients who underwent curative treatment with appropriate reconstruction. Sixty-nine patients were assessed for speech intelligibility and phonetics using a validated speech intelligibility assessment tool in the local language. Volume defects were classified as class I (less than one third), II (one third to half), III (half to two-thirds), or IV (two-thirds to total glossectomy). Defect location was defi

Application of automatic speech recognition to quantitative assessment of tracheoesophageal speech with different signal quality.

OBJECTIVE: Tracheoesophageal voice is state-of-the-art in voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy. Intelligibility on a telephone is an important evaluation criterion as it is a crucial part of social life. An objective measure of intelligibility when talking on a telephone is desirable in the field of postlaryngectomy speech therapy and its evaluation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Based upon successful earlier studies with broadband speech, an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system was applied to 41 recordings of postlaryngectomy patients. Recordings were available in different signal qualities;

Matching laboratory and real-world listening environments with ecological momentary assessment improves prediction of speech perception.

Laboratory speech-in-noise measures fail to predict real-world listening performance. This study tested whether matching laboratory to real-world environments using self-reported noise sources from ecological momentary assessment (EMA) improves predictions. Speech intelligibility and listening effort were measured in virtual acoustic environments in 51 normal-hearing adults, who then self-rated both via EMA for 1 week. Laboratory intelligibility predicted real-world intelligibility only when laboratory and real-world environments were matched. Effort results were not significant. Findings sugg

Taste and speech following surgical tongue reduction in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an overgrowth disorder in which macroglossia is one of the main signs. We investigated the long-term outcome of tongue surgery reduction (TRS) on taste and speech in patients with BWS who were more than 5 years of age and had undergone surgical anterior wedge resection of the tongue. A questionnaire was used to assess medical history and to determine some aspects of speech, taste, psychological well-being, and degree of satisfaction with regard to TRS and tongue mobility. Speech sound error pattern and degree of intelligibility were measured by a speech the
