Lumbar Stabilization with Interspinous Process Devices for Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis.

This study reports the treatment outcomes of patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis who underwent lumbar stabilization surgery and evaluates the radiological effects of the surgery at least 1 year post-surgery. Forty consecutive patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis underwent lumbar stabilization surgery using a titanium alloy interspinous spacer between August 2021 and October 2023. The cohort included 19 males and females, respectively, with a mean age of 75.2 years. The surgical level was L1 in 20 patients and L2 in 18 patients. Patients were operated using general anesthesia in 20

Prevotella oris-caused meningitis and spinal canal infection: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Prevotella oris-induced meningitis and Prevotella oris-induced meningitis concomitant with spinal canal infection are extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only 1 case of Prevotella oris-induced central system infection has been reported. This is the second report on meningitis combined with spinal canal infection due to Prevotella oris. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 9-year-old boy suffering from meningitis and spinal canal infection. The patient presented to the neurosurgery department with lumbosacral pain for 1 mo and headache and vomiting for 1 d. He had been tre

Lumbosacral extradural extramedullary hematopoiesis in thalassemia major causing spinal canal stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EH) is common in patients with ineffective erythropoiesis like thalassemia major (TM). EH commonly involves intra-abdominal organs (e.g., spleen and liver), but rarely involves vertebral bodies. Here, we reviewed images of EH contributing to spinal canal stenosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 19-year-old male with beta-thalassemia major (TM) presented with pain and bilateral lower extremity neurogenic claudication. Bilaterally, on examination, he had positive straight leg raising to 30°, a loss of the Achilles responses, and decreased pain appreciation in the

Arteriovenous Fistula Inside Cervical Spinal Canal Associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by mutation on chromosome 17, which affects the skin, vascular system, nervous system, and skeleton system. Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is one of the recognized complications of NF-1. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 33-year-old woman with NF-1 with cervical spine AVF inside the cervical spinal canal who presented with progressive spinal cord compression which was abnormal. After sufficient preparation, the patient underwent vascular embolization, and then symptoms of spinal cord compression significant

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis leads to locomotive syndrome in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Locomotive syndrome is a condition in which the ability to lead a normal life is restricted owing to a dysfunction in one or more of the parts of the musculoskeletal system. Although lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) is considered to cause locomotive syndrome, a detailed assessment of the association between two pathologies has not yet been reported. METHODS: The clinical data of patients aged > 65 years old who planned to undergo surgery for LSS at multiple institutions were prospectively collected from April 2016 to August 2017. A total of 200 participants comprising 120 men an

Osteoporotic burst fracture with spinal canal compromise treated with percutaneous vertebroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: There has been minimal literature reporting on results of osteoporotic burst fracture with spinal canal compromise treated with percutaneous vertebroplasty. Vertebroplasty for treatment of osteoporotic burst fracture is controversial. We want to clarify whether the osteoporotic burst fracture with spinal canal compromise is a contraindication to percutaneous vertebroplasty. To compare the clinical and radiological results between osteoporotic burst and compression fractures treated with percutaneous vertebroplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2005 through 2006, 23 osteoporotic burst

Single-level bilateral facet joint hypertrophy causing thoracic spinal canal stenosis.

Thoracic canal stenosis caused by hypertrophy of the posterior spinal elements is rare. We report an unusual case of bilateral zygapophyseal joint hypertrophy occurring solely at thoracic levels T10-11, producing bilateral leg weakness and numbness. The diagnosis was established using CT scans and MRI. A wide decompressive laminectomy and posterolateral bone fusion was performed. Postoperatively there was a marked improvement in symptoms and signs. We present a literature review on bilateral single-level facet joint hypertrophy producing canal stenosis and report our experience.

Isolated central canal rupture of spinal dermoid: report of two cases.

We report two cases of lumbar spinal dermoid cysts with asymptomatic rupture and migration of free fat droplets into the central canal. No fatty droplets were seen within the lumbar subarachnoid space. The presence of fat droplets within the central canal is unusual because the central canal is rudimentary in adults. We suggest that hydromyelia secondary to tumour and specific tumour morphology might facilitate the selective rupture of dermoids into the central canal. We recommend a follow up of these patients to detect any possible intracranial migration of fat droplets and resultant complica

Eccentric compression of the spinal canal causing dominantly contralateral-side symptoms.

In this retrospective study, five patients are described in whom the dural sac at the thoracic and lumbar spine was compressed by a herniated disk or stenosis, located eccentrically in the spinal canal. In all of them, the symptoms or neurologic findings were dominantly in the limb contralateral to the side of compression. All five patients were operated on and the compressing disk or lamina was removed, resulting in immediate improvement of symptoms. In only one of the patients was the compression at the common level of L4-L5. In the remaining four patients, compression was at the low thoraci

Intradural extramedullary spinal canal secondary neoplasms: MR findings in 30 patients.

The purpose of this study was to describe magnetic resonance findings of intradural spinal canal secondaries and to select the best way of investigating this condition. Thirty patients with a known malignancy [breast carcinoma (n = 14), lung carcinoma (n = 10), other sites (n = 6)] and unexplained neurologic signs were studied with pre- and post-contrast T1-weighted images and T2-weighted images. Cerebrospinal fluid cytology was available in 16 patients and positive in 11 patients. In all the patients, post-contrast T1-weighted images demonstrated abnormal enhanced lesions. Most of them were n

[Degenerative spinal canal stenosis in lumbar spine: clinical view and treatment.].

Radicular leg pain, combined with numbness and intermittent radicular paresis while walking or standing are typical symptoms of a narrow spinal canal of the lumbar spine. Medical history and lumbar myelogram are usually sufficient to localize the source of pain. We prefer the myelogram to CT-scan or MRI because it gives a longitudinal view of the whole lumbar spine, is easy to read and is also possible in the presence of a scoliotic deformity or claustrophobia. Between 1987 and 1993, 76 patients with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis were treated operatively by the same surgeon. Results are a

[Radiological diagnosis of the narrow lumbar spinal canal syndrome (author's transl)].

31 myelograms of patients with the syndrome of lumbar spinal canal constriction were analysed. Two forms can be distinguished - a primary form with hypoplasia of the lumbar section of the spinal canal, and a secondary form with circumscribed constriction through olisthy or spondylosis deformans. The characteristics symptoms of the primary form (n = 21) are: difficult lumbar puncture, the ascent of the contrast medium in the thoracic section of the vertebral canal, multiple protrusions of the intervertebral discs, reduced sagittal diameter of the dural area which is marked by additional signs o

"GatorSign" for severe lumbar spinal canal stenosis: Magnetic resonance imaging evidence of lumbar perineural edema in the central canal.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is one of the most commonly diagnosed pathological conditions of the spine. Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Regardless of the clinical presentation, a combination of radiological imaging modalities including magnetic resonance imaging, CT, and dynamic X-rays can be used to evaluate the severity. An often underrecognized aspect of severe lumbar spinal stenosis is its effect on nerve roots. We propose coining the term "GatorSign" to describe nerve root edema above the area of severe central canal stenosis. This radiological finding
