A pediatric patient with acute suppurative thyroiditis caused by Eikenella corrodens.

A previously healthy 6-year-old boy had continuous fever for 6 days before admission to our hospital. His general condition was good except for pyrexia. The left lobe of the thyroid gland was swollen, red, hot, and tender, and neck movement was limited. The provisional diagnosis was upper respiratory tract infection. We demonstrated the existence of an orifice of the left piriform sinus by esophagography in this case, and made a diagnosis of acute suppurative thyroiditis caused by a piriform sinus fistula in the hypopharynx. The causative organisms of acute suppurative thyroiditis include Pept

Comprehensive analysis of antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation and virulence factors of staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitis.

Bovine mastitis, a prevalent disease, is often attributed to staphylococci species. These microorganisms can express a diverse array of virulence genes and have the capability to form biofilms, establishing a robust defense against antimicrobials and host immune responses. In this study, we analyzed 191 Staphylococcus spp., of which 81 % were identified as Staphylococcus aureus, and 19 % as non-aureus staphylococci (NAS), including species such as S. borealis, S. chromogenes, S. haemolyticus, S. saprophyticus, S. capitis, S. ratti, and S. pasteuri. Our analysis involved determining antimicrobi

Unveiling the dynamics of the breast milk microbiome: impact of lactation stage and gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk (BM) provides complete nutrition for infants for the first six months of life and is essential for the development of the newborn's immature immune and digestive systems. While BM was conventionally believed to be sterile, recent advanced high throughput technologies have unveiled the presence of diverse microbial communities in BM. These insights into the BM microbiota have mainly originated from uncomplicated pregnancies, possibly not reflecting the circumstances of mothers with pregnancy complications like preterm birth (PTB). METHODS: In this article, we investigat

Case Report: Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis Treated With Phage Therapy After Multiple Failed Antibiotic Treatments.

Background: Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis (CBP) is an inflammatory condition caused by a persistent bacterial infection of the prostate gland and its surrounding areas in the male pelvic region. It is most common in men under 50 years of age. It is a long-lasting and debilitating condition that severely deteriorates the patient's quality of life. Anatomical limitations and antimicrobial resistance limit the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment of CBP. Bacteriophage therapy is proposed as a promising alternative treatment of CBP and related infections. Bacteriophage therapy is the use of lytic

Molecular identification and hydrolase activity profiling of bacteria isolated from septic surface environments using 16S rRNA sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Hospital septic surfaces represent critical reservoirs for persistent microbial contamination and may contribute to the spread of opportunistic pathogens in healthcare environments. Enzyme-producing bacteria colonizing such surfaces can enhance environmental persistence and resistance to routine sanitation procedures. This study aimed to investigate the diversity, enzymatic potential, and phylogenetic relationships of bacteria isolated from hospital septic surfaces using morphological, biochemical, and molecular approaches. METHODS: Environmental samples were collected from select

Genomic portraits of methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) from food fish unveiled the genes associated with staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP), virulence and antimicrobial resistance.

BACKGROUND: Characteristics of non-clinical strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) especially from fishery environment are poorly understood. This research, in addition to comprehensive characterisation, sought to delineate the genetic relatedness between the MRSA strains originating from clinical as well as non-clinical settings. Out of 39 methicillin-resistant staphylococcal isolates from 197 fish samples, 6 (Three each of methicillin-resistant S. haemolyticus (MRSH) and MRSA) with distinct resistance profiles were selected for whole-genome sequencing. The emerging threat of multidrug-resistant mecA gene-positive coagulase-negative Staphylococci.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), previously classified as normal bacterial flora, have recently been associated with serious infectious diseases. The clinical isolation rate of these bacteria has increased in parallel with a rising prevalence of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence and species diversity of CoNS and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred samples were collected from patients attending outpatient clinics. Bacterial genus, species, and antimicrobial susceptibility pat

Detection and genetic characterization of multidrug-resistant staphylococci isolated from public areas in an international airport.

The environmental realm has been acknowledged as a pivotal arena for the emergence and propagation of antimicrobial resistance. To further explore insight into antimicrobial resistance dynamics beyond clinical and veterinary settings, we embarked on an environmental surveillance initiative targeting the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria within the bustling confines of an international airport in Japan. Our findings illuminate a high prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococci (46.3%) on frequently contacted surfaces in the public domain. Notably, Staphylococcus haemolyticus and

The role of extracellular polysaccharide substance produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis in miliaria.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that cutaneous bacteria, particularly coagulase-negative staphylococci, play a role in the pathogenesis of miliaria. An accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive material has been described as blocking the sweat duct in miliaria. Furthermore, a PAS-positive extracellular polysaccharide substance (EPS) has been identified as a product of some strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the relative ability of various species of coagulase-negative staphylococci to induce miliaria with particular reference to the potential

Identification of coagulase-negative staphylococci with the API staph system.

A kit for the identification of staphylococci based on the biochemical criteria proposed by Kloos and Schleifer (W.E. Kloos and K.H. Schleifer, J. Clin. Microbiol., 1:82-88, 1975) is now available commercially. The system was used to identify 100 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from various body sites as the primary etiological agent of clinical infection. The increasing importance of staphylococci and their resistance to antibiotics provided the rationale for such an investigation. Over 90% of the Staphylococcus isolates were easily identified as to their species on the b

Correlations between consumption of antibiotics and methicillin resistance in coagulase negative staphylococci.

The correlation between antibiotic consumption, expressed in defined daily doses (DDD), and antibiotic resistance rates was studied, using 976 isolates of coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS) from human pathological material. Data from four hospitals, including 14 participating departments, were analysed for this purpose. Susceptibility tests were performed according to Dutch national standards, except for methicillin, which for the majority of isolates was tested according to adapted NCCLS standards. Resistance to methicillin was most frequent in Staphylococcus epidermidis (29%) and S. haem

Genetic diversity and iron metabolism of Staphylococcus hominis isolates originating from bovine quarter milk, rectal feces, and teat apices.

Staphylococcus hominis, a member of the non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) group, is part of the human and animal microbiota. Although it has been isolated from multiple bovine-associated habitats, its relevance as a cause of bovine mastitis is currently not well described. To successfully colonize and proliferate in the bovine mammary gland, a bacterial species must be able to acquire iron from host iron-binding proteins. The aims of this study were (1) to assess the genetic diversity of S. hominis isolated from bovine quarter milk, rectal feces, and teat apices, and (2) to investigate the capaci
