The relative risk of spatial cluster occurrence and spatiotemporal evolution of meningococcal disease in Niger, 2002-2008.

Meningococcal disease is a major public health concern in Sahelian Africa, where over half of the cases reported worldwide occur. In an effort to find annual spatial clusters of meningococcal disease and in order to study their evolution in Niger from January 2002 to June 2008, a prospective study of routine national surveillance data was conducted pertaining to patients with suspected bacterial meningitis. The diagnoses were obtained by analysing patients' cerebrospinal fluid, using polymerase chain reaction or bacteriology. SatScan using Poisson's model was used to calculate the relative ris

Personal exposure to mixtures of volatile organic compounds: modeling and further analysis of the RIOPA data.

INTRODUCTION: Emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs*) are numerous and widespread in both indoor and outdoor environments. Concentrations of VOCs indoors typically exceed outdoor levels, and most people spend nearly 90% of their time indoors. Thus, indoor sources generally contribute the majority of VOC exposures for most people. VOC exposure has been associated with a wide range of acute and chronic health effects; for example, asthma, respiratory diseases, liver and kidney dysfunction, neurologic impairment, and cancer. Although exposures to most VOCs for most persons fall bel

Arousal tunes neuronal avalanches across a directed percolation critical point.

Neuromodulatory levels in the brain change moment to moment, yet are typically ignored in studies of neural criticality, where empirical support remains varied. Here we show in a biophysical network of bursting neurons that arousal acts as a mechanistic control parameter for a directed percolation phase transition. At intermediate arousal, neuronal activity exhibits peaked susceptibility, power-law avalanche size and duration distributions, universal shape collapse, and anomalous diffusion, jointly satisfying the hyperscaling relation of the 2+1-dimensional directed percolation universality cl

Meta-analysis of observational studies with unmeasured confounders.

Meta-analysis of observational studies is an exciting new area of innovation in statistical science. Unlike randomized controlled trials, which are the gold standard for proving causation, observational studies are prone to biases including confounding. In this article, we describe a novel Bayesian procedure to control for a confounder that is missing across the sequence of studies in a meta-analysis. We motivate the discussion with the example of a meta-analysis of cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies examining the relationship between oral contraceptives and endometriosis. An imp

Unconventional Piezoelectricity of Two-Dimensional Materials Driven by the Hall Effect.

Piezoelectricity has been widely explored for nanoelectromechanical applications, yet its working modes are mainly limited in polar directions. Here we discover the intrinsic electro-mechanical response in crystal materials that is transverse to the conventional polarized direction, which is named unconventional piezoelectricity. A Hall-like mechanism is proposed to interpret unconventional piezoelectricity as charge polarization driven by a built-in electric field for systems with asymmetric Berry curvature distributions. Density functional theory simulations and statistical analyses justify

Intergenic transposable elements are not randomly distributed in bacteria.

Insertion sequences (ISs) are mobile genetic elements in bacterial genomes. In general, intergenic IS elements are probably less deleterious for their hosts than intragenic ISs, simply because they have a lower likelihood of disrupting native genes. However, since promoters, Shine-Dalgarno sequences, and transcription factor binding sites are intergenic and upstream of genes, I hypothesized that not all neighboring gene orientations (NGOs) are selectively equivalent for IS insertion. To test this, I analyzed the NGOs of all intergenic ISs in 326 fully sequenced bacterial chromosomes. Of the 11

Sensitivity of PFAS-derived Fluorine Metrics to Target-List Composition, LoQ Distributions, and Non-Detect Handling in Fluoropolymer Combustion at a Pilot-Scale Waste Incineration Plant.

Targeted analytical methods are widely used to quantify per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in combustion flue-gas. However, interpretation of PFAS emission data is challenged by high shares of non-detects (NDs), heterogeneous limits of quantification (LoQs), and extensive target analyte lists. This study evaluates the influence of ND-treatment, target-list composition and LoQ distributions on PFAS-derived fluorine metrics using two pilot-scale incineration datasets. Both datasets exhibit high ND-shares and analyte-specific LoQs spanning several orders of magnitude. Current analytical t

Association of the OLR1 rs11053646 Polymorphism with Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Saudi Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Genetic polymorphisms affecting oxidative stress and lipid metabolism contribute to type 2 diabetes (T2D). The role of oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor 1 (OLR1) rs11053646 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the Saudi population remains unclear. This study aimed to assess its association with T2D risk in Saudi adults. METHODS: A tertiary hospital-based case-control study was conducted among 143 Saudi adults (≥18 years) in Riyadh from November 2019 to January 2020, including 79 individuals with T2D (fasting blood glucose ≥7 mmol/L) and 64 normoglycemic controls (<5.6

The geographical distribution of the family-genetic risk score for drug use disorder in Sweden and its co-localization with areas of social deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Drug use Disorder (DUD), the risk for which is substantially influenced by both genetic and social factors, is geographically concentrated in high-risk regions. An important step toward understanding this pattern is to examine geographical distributions of the genetic liability to DUD and a key demographic risk factor - social deprivation. METHODS: We calculated the mean family genetic risk score (FGRS) for DUD ((FGRSDUD) and social deprivation for each of the 5983 areas Demographic Statistical Areas (DeSO) for all of Sweden and used geospatial techniques to analyze and map these

Automated treatment planning for proton pencil beam scanning using deep learning dose prediction and dose-mimicking optimization.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of a deep learning architecture for automated treatment planning for proton pencil beam scanning (PBS). METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) U-Net model has been implemented in a commercial treatment planning system (TPS) that uses contoured regions of interest (ROI) binary masks as model inputs with a predicted dose distribution as the model output. Predicted dose distributions were converted to deliverable PBS treatment plans using a voxel-wise robust dose mimicking optimization algorithm. This model was leveraged to generate machine lea

Isodose surface differences: A novel tool for the comparison of dose distributions.

BACKGROUND: Comparing dose distributions is a routine task in radiotherapy, mainly in patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA). Currently, the evaluation of the dose distributions is being performed mainly with statistical methods, which could underestimate the clinical importance of the spotted differences, as per the literature. PURPOSE: This paper aims to provide proof-of-concept for a novel dose distribution comparison method based on the difference of the isodose surfaces. The new method connects acceptance tolerance to QA limitations (equipment capabilities) and integrates a clinical a

Being certain about uncertainties: a robust evaluation method for high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy treatment plans including the combination of uncertainties.

In high-dose-rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy the combined effect of uncertainties cause a range of possible dose distributions deviating from the nominal plan, and which are not considered during treatment plan evaluation. This could lead to dosimetric misses for critical structures and overdosing of organs at risk. A robust evaluation method to assess the combination of uncertainties during plan evaluation is presented and demonstrated on one HDR prostate ultrasound treatment plan retrospectively. A range of uncertainty scenarios are simulated by changing six parameters in the nominal plan

Finite element contact stress analysis of the temporomandibular joints of patients with temporomandibular disorders under mastication.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) represent a group of diseases occurred in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its surrounding tissues. In epidemiological studies, up to 75% of adults have shown at least one sign of temporomandibular disorders during their examinations. The incongruous biomechanical environment in the TMJ is the main pathogenic factor of TMD. This study attempts to determine the mechanical differences in different groups of TMD patients through biomechanics and to explain the mechanical pathogenesis of TMD according to various cases. METHODS: Ele

Neuronal firing rates diverge during REM and homogenize during non-REM.

Neurons fire at highly variable intrinsic rates and recent evidence suggests that low- and high-firing rate neurons display different plasticity and dynamics. Furthermore, recent publications imply possibly differing rate-dependent effects in hippocampus versus neocortex, but those analyses were carried out separately and with potentially important differences. To more effectively synthesize these questions, we analyzed the firing rate dynamics of populations of neurons in both hippocampal CA1 and frontal cortex under one framework that avoids the pitfalls of previous analyses and accounts for

Are migraine and tension-type headache diagnostic types or points on a severity continuum? An exploration of the latent taxometric structure of headache.

The objective of this study was to assess whether migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) are best viewed as discrete entities or points on a severity continuum using taxometric analysis. Historically, classification systems have conceptualized the primary headache disorders of migraine and TTH as fundamentally different disorders that are differentiated by their characteristic symptom profiles and, as such, imply differing pathophysiologies and required treatments. Despite this categorical nosology, findings continue to emerge suggesting that migraine and TTH instead reflect dimensions of se

Transverse cervical and great auricular nerve distribution in the mandibular area: a study in human cadavers.

The angle of the jaw is innervated by the auricular branch of the superficial cervical plexus (SCP). Cervical cutaneous nerves of the CP carry the sensation from the antero-lateral cervical skin. It is clinically relevant to identify the cervical cutaneous nerve distribution and the nerve point using superficial landmarks but published studies describing the emerging patterns and cervical cutaneous nerve branch distributions in the mandible are rare. The overlap between the cervical and trigeminal and facial nerve distributions and anastomoses is highly variable. The objective of this study wa

Vagal afferent innervation of the proximal gastrointestinal tract mucosa: chemoreceptor and mechanoreceptor architecture.

The vagus nerve supplies low-threshold chemo- and mechanosensitive afferents to the mucosa of the proximal gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The absence of a full characterization of the morphology and distributions of these projections has hampered comprehensive functional analyses. In the present experiment, dextran (10K) conjugated with tetramethylrhodamine and biotin was injected into the nodose ganglion and used to label the terminal arbors of individual vagal afferents of both rats and mice. Contrasting patterns in the small-scale heterogeneity of human helminth infections in urban and rural environments in Brazil.

Marked heterogeneity exists in the patterns of parasitic infection between individuals, households and communities. Analysis of parasite distributions within populations is complicated by the fact that parasite distributions are highly aggregated and few studies have explicitly incorporated this distribution when investigating small-scale spatial heterogeneities. This study aimed to quantify the small-scale (within- and between-household) heterogeneity of helminth infection in an area of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, with rural and urban sectors. Association of cholecystokinin-A receptor gene polymorphisms and panic disorder in Japanese.

Several lines of evidence have suggested that naturally occurring alterations in cholecystokinin (CCK) systems could contribute to the development of panic disorder (PD). Among recent investigations, polymorphisms of the CCK and CCK-B receptor (R) genes were investigated, but the results were inconclusive. We recently cloned the genomic structures of human CCK-AR, and determined the transcriptional start site of the human CCK-AR gene. Two sequence changes were detected in the promoter region: a G to T change in nucleotide -128 and an A to G change in nucleotide -81 (GenBank database under acce

Estimation of Underlying Normal Distribution Parameters From Dichotomized Data.

Accurately estimating the parameters of a continuous distribution from dichotomized or aggregated data is a common problem in biomedical and environmental research. Many studies report only the proportion of subjects exceeding a threshold, without releasing individual-level measurements. To address this limitation, we develop a hierarchical binomial-probit modeling framework to reconstruct the parameters of an underlying normal distribution from threshold-based data. The framework considers two principal settings. In the fixed-mean model, all studies are assumed to share a common mean and vari
