[Auditory hallucination as an initial sign of frontotemporal dementia].

A 58-year-old right-handed man presented with a 9-year history of stereotyped behaviors and auditory hallucinations. At 49 years of age, he began to complain about auditory hallucinations that said offensive things about him, and around the same time, he began exhibiting stereotyped behaviors. For example, he traveled the same long route from his office to home every evening. Disinhibitory behavior occurred at 53 years of age, and he was forced to retire at 54 years of age. After retirement, the patient stayed in bed or showed a stereotyped behavior of repeatedly going to a nearby shrine every

[Effects of low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on Electroencephalograph rhythm of children with autism].

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and stereotyped behaviors. Electroencephalograph (EEG), which can measure neurological changes associated with cortical synaptic activity, has been proven to be a powerful tool for detecting neurological disorders. The main goal of this study is to explore the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on behavioral response and EEG. We enrolled 32 autistic children, rTMS group ( n = 16) and control group ( n = 16) and calculated the relative power of the

A rodent model of spontaneous stereotypy: initial characterization of developmental, environmental, and neurobiological factors.

Stereotypies are patterns of motor behavior that are repetitive, excessive, topographically invariant, and that lack any obvious function or purpose. In humans, stereotyped behaviors are associated with psychiatric, neurological, and developmental disorders. In animals, stereotypy has been frequently associated with adverse environmental circumstances and often related to alterations in striatal dopamine. To assess the development of stereotyped behaviors and to test the hypothesis that these behaviors are associated with environmental restriction, deer mice were housed in either standard labo

Gender-Typed Play Behavior in Early Childhood: Adopted Children with Lesbian, Gay, and Heterosexual Parents.

This study examined whether the gender-typed play of young children varies as a function of family structure. Using a sample of 126 couples (44 lesbian couples, 34 gay male couples, and 48 heterosexual couples) located throughout the United States, with an adopted child between the age of 2 and 4 years old (mean = 2.5 years), we examined parent reports of children's gender-typed play behavior utilizing the Pre-School Activities Inventory (PSAI; Golombok & Rust, 1993). Findings revealed that the perceived play behaviors of boys and girls in same-gender parent families were more similar (i.e., l

Effect of ketamine administration, alone and in combination with E-6837, on climbing behavior.

Some types of schizophrenia have been associated with repetitive movements lacking specific purpose, also known as stereotyped behavior. Dopamine agonists (D2) and noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists (e.g. ketamine) have been administered in rodent models to induce stereotyped behavior that resembles some motor symptoms of schizophrenia. Recently, a relationship has been found between 5-HT6 receptors (5-HT6Rs) and dopaminergic activity. The present study evaluates the effect of ketamine (5 and 10 mg/kg), alone and in combination with the 5-HT6R agonist E-6837, on the climb

Preliminary study on determining stereotypical motor movements.

Stereotypical motor movements are one of the most common and least understood behaviors occurring in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To overcome problems with traditional methods for measuring stereotypical motor movements in persons with ASD, the Kinect sensor from Microsoft and gesture recognition algorithms were used to automatically detect hand flapping. This study provides a valuable tool to monitor stereotypes in order to understand and to cope with this problem. At the end it facilitates to identify behavioral patterns especially relevant when studying interaction skill

Functional reactivity of the dopaminergic system following acute and chronic ketamine treatments.

This study examined the effects of acute (15 mg/kg, i.p.) and chronic subanesthetic (15 mg/kg, i.p., t.i.d, for 6 days) doses of ketamine [a noncompetitive N-methyl-D: -aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist] on amphetamine (presynaptic dopamine releasing agent; 10 mg/kg, i.p.) and apomorphine (a D(2) receptor agonist; 1 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced stereotyped behaviors. The effect of acute and chronic ketamine on haloperidol (a D(2) receptor antagonist; 1.6 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced catalepsy was also examined. Acute ketamine and chronic ketamine pretreatment increased amphetamine-induced stereotyped sniff

Pemoline produces ipsilateral turning behavior in unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rats.

1. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received either a unilateral injection of 6-hydroxy-dopamine or vehicle injection into the medial forebrain bundle. 2. Two weeks post surgery, all rats received a pemoline challenge (250 mg/kg s.c.), and rotational and stereotyped behaviors were videotaped and analyzed. 3. All rats regardless of injection expressed stereotyped behaviors and hyper-locomotion after pemoline challenge. 4. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection was used to evaluate changes in the levels of dopamine, serotonin and their metabolites in neostriata. 5.

Protective effects of cholecystokinin-8 on methamphetamine-induced behavioral changes and dopaminergic neurodegeneration in mice.

We investigated whether pretreatment with the neuropeptide cholecystokinin-8 affected methamphetamine (METH)-induced behavioral changes and dopaminergic neurodegeneration in male C57/BL6 mice. CCK-8 pretreatment alone had no effect on locomotion and stereotypic behavior and could not induce behavioral sensitization; however, it attenuated, in a dose-dependent manner, hyperlocomotion and behavioral sensitization induced by a low dose of METH (1mg/kg). CCK-8 attenuated METH-induced stereotypic behavior at a dose of 3mg/kg but not at 10mg/kg. CCK-8 pretreatment attenuated METH (10mg/kg)-induced h

Maternal fluoxetine treatment decreases behavioral response to dopaminergic drugs in female pups.

Since serotonin (5-HT) acts as neurotrophic factor, the use of fluoxetine (FLX) by mothers during pregnancy and/or lactation could disrupt brain development of the progeny. To unveil if maternal FLX exposure could compromise the functional integrity of monoaminergic and GABA-ergic neurotransmission, the behavioral responses of male and female mouse pups to diethylpropion, apomorphine, 8-OH-DPAT and diazepam were evaluated. Swiss dams were gavaged daily with FLX (7.5 mg/kg) or tap water during pregnancy day zero to weaning (postnatal day 21). Pups were evaluated on postnatal day 40. The behavio

The Responders' Gender Stereotypes Modulate the Strategic Decision-Making of Proposers Playing the Ultimatum Game.

Despite the wealth of studies investigating factors affecting decisions, not much is known about the impact of stereotypical beliefs on strategic economic decision-making. In the present study, we used the ultimatum game paradigm to investigate how participants playing as proposer modulate their strategic economic behavior, according to their game counterparts' stereotypical identity (i.e., responders). The latter were introduced to the participants using occupational role nouns stereotypically marked with gender paired with feminine or masculine proper names (e.g., linguist-Anna; economist-Da

Compulsive singing: another aspect of punding in Parkinson's disease.

We report on two patients with advanced Parkinson's disease who were exhibiting a peculiar and stereotyped behavior characterized by an irrepressible need to sing compulsively when under high-dose dopamine replacement therapy. Sharing many features with punding, this singing behavior is proposed as a distinct manifestation of the dopamine dysregulation syndrome in Parkinson's disease.

Exploring the relation between masculinity and mental illness stigma using the stereotype content model and BIAS map.

The current research explored the association of masculinity and stigma toward mental illness using theoretical predictions stemming from the stereotype content model and BIAS map. Two correlational studies (Ns = 245, 163) measured stereotypes, emotions, and behavioral intentions in relation to masculine, feminine, and gender-neutral disorders. Participants perceived masculine disorders as lacking personal warmth and competence. Masculine disorders also elicited more negative emotions and behavioral intentions. Two experimental studies (Ns = 161, 431) manipulated personal warmth, sex, and type

Characteristics of early rhythmic behaviors in children at risk for developmental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal stereotyped behaviors are a significant problem for many individuals with mental retardation or mental illness. To increase understanding of the development of abnormal stereotyped behaviors, the authors investigated the early rhythmic behaviors of children at increased risk for developmental delays. METHOD: Rhythmic behaviors in 13-month-old children born prematurely and in children born at term were coded from laboratory videotapes of structured interaction segments. RESULTS: While few differences in early rhythmic behaviors were found between children born prematurely

Automated detection of stereotypical motor movements.

To overcome problems with traditional methods for measuring stereotypical motor movements in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), we evaluated the use of wireless three-axis accelerometers and pattern recognition algorithms to automatically detect body rocking and hand flapping in children with ASD. Findings revealed that, on average, pattern recognition algorithms correctly identified approximately 90% of stereotypical motor movements repeatedly observed in both laboratory and classroom settings. Precise and efficient recording of stereotypical motor movements could enable researcher

Systematic autistic-like behavioral phenotyping of 4 mouse strains using a novel wheel-running assay.

Three core symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders are stereotypic movements, resistance to change in routines and deficits in social interaction. In order to understand their neuronal mechanisms, there is a dire need for behavioral paradigms to assess those symptoms in rodents. Here we present a novel method which is based on positive reward in a customized wheel-running apparatus to assess these symptoms. As a proof of concept, 4 mouse strains were tested in the new behavioral paradigm; 2 control lines (C57BL/6 and ICR) and 2 mouse-models of autism (BTBR T+ tf/J and Nlgn3(tm1Sud)). We found

Neural control of sexually dimorphic behaviors.

All sexually reproducing animals exhibit gender differences in behavior. Such sexual dimorphisms in behavior are most obvious in stereotyped displays that enhance reproductive success such as mating, aggression, and parental care. Sexually dimorphic behaviors are a consequence of a sexually differentiated nervous system, and recent studies in fruit flies and mice reveal novel insights into the neural mechanisms that control these behaviors. In the main, these include a diverse array of novel sex differences in the nervous system, surprisingly modular control of various stereotyped dimorphic be
