The viridans group streptococci comprise multiple species and have gained more recognition in recent years as common etiologic agents of bacterial endophthalmitis. The purpose of this study was to identify the species of human endophthalmitis isolates of viridans streptococci and to characterize their potential virulence attributes. The species of 22 endophthalmitis strains of viridans streptococci were identified by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Flight. Susceptibilities to 3 antibiotics commonly used for bacterial endophthalmitis were determined. The extracellular milieu

Identification of body fluids found at crime scenes provides important information that can support a link between sample donors and actual criminal acts. Previous studies have reported that DNA methylation analysis at several tissue-specific differentially methylated regions (tDMRs) enables successful identification of semen, and the detection of certain bacterial DNA can allow for identification of saliva and vaginal fluid. In the present study, a method for detecting bacterial DNA was integrated into a previously reported multiplex methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme-polymerase chain r

A DNA sequence specifying tetracycline resistance (Tcr) has been previously cloned from a clinical isolate of Streptococcus mutans designated U202 (J. A. Tobian and F. L. Macrina, J. Bacteriol. 152:215-222, 1982). We used this sequence as a molecular probe in studying the dissemination of Tcr among oral streptococcal species isolated from patients treated with tetracycline. Eleven strains (including S. sanguis I, S. sanguis II, S. mitis, and S. salivarius) from seven patients were examined by Southern blot analysis. Seven strains showed strong hybridization to the Tcr probe, two showed weak hy

Background and objectives: The development of the oral microbiome begins in the prenatal stage. Breast milk contains antimicrobial proteins, microorganisms, metabolites, enzymes, and immunoglobulins, among others; therefore, differences have been noted in the type of microorganisms that colonize the oral cavity of children who are breastfed compared to those who are formula-fed. Our objective was to establish the relationship between breastfeeding, formula feeding, or mixed feeding (breastfeeding and formula) with the presence of S. mutans in a population of children under 6 months of age. Helicobacter pylori is a neutralophilic, gram-negative, ureolytic organism that is able to colonize the human stomach but does not survive in a defined medium with a pH <4.0 unless urea is present. In order to live in the gastric environment, it has developed a repertoire of acid resistance mechanisms that can be classified into time-independent, acute, and chronic responses. Time-independent acid resistance depends on the structure of the organism's inner and outer membrane proteins that have a high isoelectric point, thereby reducing their proton permeability. Acute acid resistance depends o

INTRODUCTION: Xerostomia (dry mouth) and dysgeusia (taste changes) are subjective oral symptoms affecting radiation-treated head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Our objective was to determine longitudinal and cross-sectional changes in oral microbiome profiles and predicted molecular pathways. METHODS: Saliva and tongue swab samples from HNC patients (N = 25) were collected at baseline (BL) and 18-months (18mos) post-radiation therapy (RT). 16S-rRNA gene V1-V3 next generation sequencing was performed. Subjective xerostomia and dysgeusia scores were determined using EORTC QLQ-H&N ranking scale.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the primary manifestation of permanent vision loss internationally. Different factors that contribute to ARMD involve ageing, genetic predisposition, oxidative stress, immunological imbalances, aberrations in the breakdown of lipids, and persistent inflammation. Gut microbiota has emerged as the significant cause of ARMD by disrupting systemic immune and inflammatory responses and metabolic homeostasis. Age-related changes in gut microbiota (dysbiosis) cause lowered microbial diversity, enhanced gut permeability, and pro-inflammatory species, leading

Salivary microbiota is considered a source of microorganisms for the respiratory and digestive tracts, and a trigger for diseases in these distant organs. Meanwhile, the microbiota on the tongue surface is thought to be a major source of salivary microbiota. Therefore, surgical resection of the tongue for definitive treatment of oral cancer could drastically change the salivary bacterial balance and virulence. Here, we investigated the shift of the salivary microbiota following surgical resection in patients with tongue cancer. The stimulated saliva samples were collected from 25 tongue cancer

INTRODUCTION: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) can be complicated by miniplate exposure, loosening, or infection. Infected miniplates lead to exposure, extrusion, fistula formation, bony nonunion, and osteomyelitis. Whenever any posttreated cases of ORIF become infected, it is treated blindly with a high dose of antibiotics and surgical removal of infected miniplates or screws. The aim and objectives of the study were to identify the frequency and site of infection in craniomaxillofacial implants and significance of microbes isolated from the infected region.

Tongue microbiota are a dominant source of oral microbial populations that are ingested with saliva, and therefore careful attention is required for the maintenance of health of elderly adults, who are susceptible to aspiration of oral contents. This study aimed to investigate the variation in tongue microbiota among community-dwelling elderly adults. Following a dental examination, tongue coating was collected from a 15-mm-diameter circular area at the center of the tongue dorsum of 506 elderly adults aged 70 to 80 years inhabiting the town of Hisayama, Japan. The microbial composition and de

Microbial communities present in body fluids can assist in distinguishing between types of body fluids. Metagenomic studies have reported bacterial genera which are core to specific body fluids and are greatly influenced by geographical location and ethnicity. Bacteria in body fluids could also be due to bacterial infection; hence, it would be worthwhile taking into consideration bacterial species associated with diseases. The present review reports bacterial species characteristic of diseased and healthy body fluids across geographical locations, and bacteria described in forensic studies, wi
