The fate and removal efficiency of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in livestock wastewater by microbial fuel cell (MFC) was evaluated by High-throughput quantitative PCR. The results showed that 137 ARGs and 9 MGEs were detected in untreated livestock wastewater. The ARG number of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin group B (MLSB), tetracycline and sulfonamide were relatively higher. Throughout the treatment process, the number and abundance of ARGs and MGEs significantly decreased. The relative abundance of tetracycline, sulfonamide and chloramphenicol re

An increasing number of group A streptococci (GAS) with constitutive or inducible resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B antibiotics (cMLS or iMLS phenotype) is observed in Europe, but MLS resistant GAS associated with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) has not been reported. We describe a patient admitted with STSS caused by an iMLS resistant T28 M77 Streptococcus pyogenes carrying the ermA [subclass TR] gene. A 2-y retrospective analysis among 701 nationwide collected GAS strains revealed an incidence of 3.1% of this M type 77 GAS. Analysis of 17 available M77 strains (12

Inappropriate consumption and over-prescription of antibiotics have been extensively reported. Our aim was to specifically evaluate the antibiotic prescribing patterns and appropriateness among the elderly (≥65 years) from the Lombardy region (Italy) in primary care. Antibiotic consumption (as DID: DDD/1000 inhabitants × day) and prevalence rates in 2018 were assessed, and the prescribing quality was evaluated using ESAC-based indicators and WHO-AWaRe criteria. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between the probability of receiving an antibiot

Water resources recovery facilities (WWTPs) are hotspots for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pose a significant threat to environments. Therefore, ARG removal efficiencies of WWTPs are of great importance. In this study, conventional activated sludge (CAS), biological nutrient removal (BNR), sequencing batch reactor (SBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), package MBR, and WWTP with coagulation-flocculation and UV disinfection units were investigated in terms of their removal efficiencies on overall bacterial genes with 16S rDNA and seven ARGs including the genes aadA, blaCTX-M , cmlA, ermB, s

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a well-known agent of community-acquired infections such as sinusitis, otitis media, pneumonia, bacterial meningitis, bacteremia and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. However, the role of S. pneumoniae as a cause of nosocomial infections of respiratory tract, bloodstream and central nervous system is more and more recognized, primarily in high-risk patients with depression of their immune function. Therapy of pneumococcal infections is made difficult by the emergence and spread of bacterial resistance to penicillin and other beta-lactams as well as to a num

Until recently, research has focused on Clostridium perfringens in clinical settings without considering environmental isolates. In this study, environmental genomes were used to investigate possible antibiotic resistance and the presence of virulence traits in C. perfringens strains from raw surface water. In silico assembly of three C. perfringens strains, DNA generated almost complete genomes setting their length ranging from 3.4 to 3.6 Mbp with GC content of 28.18%. An average of 3,175 open reading frames was identified, with the majority associated with carbohydrate and protein metabolism

In Serbia, the frequency of macrolide-resistant group A streptococci (MRGASs) increased significantly from 2006 to 2009. MRGAS analysis in 2008 revealed the presence of three major clonal lineages: emm75/mefA, emm12/mefA, and emm77/ermTR. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of macrolide resistance and to evaluate variations in the clonal composition of MRGASs. The study included 1,040 pharyngeal group A streptococci collected throughout Serbia, which were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. MRGAS isolates were further characterized by the presence of resistance de

Several gastrointestinal diseases show a sex imbalance, although the underlying (patho)physiological mechanisms behind this are not well understood. The gut microbiome may be involved in this process, forming a complex interaction with host immune system, sex hormones, medication and other environmental factors. Here we performed sex-specific analyses of fecal microbiota composition in 1135 individuals from a population-based cohort. The overall gut microbiome composition of females and males was significantly different (p = 0.001), with females showing a greater microbial diversity (p = 0.009

The potential impact of food animals in the production environment on the bacterial population as a result of antimicrobial drug use for growth enhancement continues to be a cause for concern. Enterococci from 82 farms within a poultry production region on the eastern seaboard were isolated to establish a baseline of susceptibility profiles for a number of antimicrobials used in production as well as clinical environments. Of the 541 isolates recovered, Enterococcus faecalis (53%) and E. faecium (31%) were the predominant species, while multiresistant antimicrobial phenotypes were observed amo

Two issues that have become clinically relevant to the treatment of pneumonia over the past few years are the development of antibiotic resistance among respiratory pathogens and the increasing importance of the atypical respiratory pathogens---Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella spp. Resistance has become an important issue in Streptococcus pneumoniae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative rods. The ways by which bacteria become resistant to antibiotics include production of antibiotic-modifying enzymes, reduced access to target sites, efflux of

ermC is a plasmid gene which specifies resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B antibiotics. The product of ermC was previously shown to be an inducible rRNA methylase, which is regulated translationally, and a mechanism for this regulation, termed the translational attenuation model, has been proposed. This model postulates that alternative inactive and active conformational states of the ermC mRNA are modulated by erythromycin-induced ribosome-stalling during translation of a leader peptide. In the present study the translational attenuation model was tested by constructing a seri

BACKGROUND: The newest method of treatment for patients with NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) is immunotherapy directed at the immune checkpoints PD-1 (Programmed Cell Death 1) and PD-L1 (Programmed Cell Death Ligand 1). PD-L1 is the only validated predictor factor for immunotherapy efficacy, but it is imperfect. Some patients do not benefit from immunotherapy and may develop primary or secondary resistance. This study aimed to assess the intestinal resistome composition of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors in the context of clinical featur

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has a gene that makes it resistant to methicillin, as well as to other beta-lactam antibiotics, including flucloxacillin, beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations, cephalosporins, and carbapenems. MRSA can be part of the normal body flora (colonisation), especially in the nose, but it can cause infection, particularly in people with prolonged hospital admissions, with underlying disease, or after antibiotic use. About 8% of S aureus in blood cultures in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland is resistant to methicillin.
