OBJECTIVES: Research in adults suggests that intrusive memories and intrusive thoughts (often referred to as intrusive cognitions) are common in members of the general population and are often seen in clinical disorders. However, little is known about the experience of intrusive cognitions in adolescents, particularly in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study sought to gather fundamental data on these phenomena (i.e., frequency, characteristics and appraisals of intrusive cognitions) in adolescents with MDD and PTSD.

Combat is often associated with the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. Battle may also lead to other emotional extremes. Sometimes this is enough to meet criteria for a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BPD), but it is open to debate if this is clinically appropriate. This study examined the rate of BPD, as assessed by structured interview, in combat veterans who clinicians believed met the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder but not BPD. Structured interviews were conducted with 109 such participants. Close to 81% endorsed a history of a major depressive episode, 34.9% endorsed

Bipolar disorder (BD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur among psychiatric patients, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) function is associated with core characteristics of both BD and PTSD. We propose a neurobiological model that underscores the role of reduced BDNF function resulting from several contributing sources, including the met variant of the BDNF val66met (rs6265) single-nucleotide polymorphism, trauma-induced epigenetic regulation and current stress, as a contributor to the onset of both illnesses within

The exposure in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-known intervention, widely investigated in scientific research. Several studies have shown the benefits of this intervention in the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The different exposure techniques are mainly based on the emotional processing of fear theory and use an emotional stimulation of fear, following by its habituation. However, new approaches have emerged and are based on the inhibitory learning theory. The virtual reality technology allows emot

Traumatic events are common during childhood and adolescence and may lead to acute stress disorder (ASD) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), both associated with developmental, cognitive and functional impairment. Although trauma-focused psychotherapies are recommended as first-line treatments, pharmacological interventions are frequently used in clinical practice despite limited evidence in paediatric populations. To review the evidence on pharmacological interventions for the prevention and treatment of paediatric ASD and PTSD, we reviewed the literature published up to December 2025.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder (ASD) are mental health conditions that may emerge following a frightening or traumatic event in a person's life. We conducted a health technology assessment of internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) for adults with PTSD or ASD, which included an evaluation of effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, the budget impact of publicly funding iCBT for PTSD or ADS, and patient preferences and values.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of the clinical evidence. We assessed the risk of bia

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disorders are prevalent among patients with long COVID. The intersection of PTSD and/or sleep disorders with long COVID is complex. Thus, use of a biopsychosocial lens for assessment and treatment along with a trauma-informed approach to clinical care is recommended. This review provides an overview of the literature on PTSD and sleep disorders among patients with long COVID, including prevalence rates, risk factors, and potential pathophysiology. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options are reviewed. Also, we provide actionable

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric conditions worldwide sharing many clinical manifestations and, most likely, neural mechanisms as suggested by neuroimaging research. While the so-called fear circuitry and traditional limbic structures of the brain, particularly the amygdala, have been extensively studied in sufferers of these disorders, the cerebellum has been relatively underexplored. The aim of this paper was to present a mini-review of functional (task-activity or resting-state connectivity) and structural (gray matter volu

Significant trauma histories and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in persons with substance use disorders (SUD) and often associate with increased SUD severity and poorer response to SUD treatment. As such, this sub-population has been associated with unique risk factors and treatment needs. Understanding the distinct etiological profile of persons with co-occurring SUD and PTSD is therefore crucial for advancing our knowledge of underlying mechanisms and the development of precision treatments. To this end, we employed supervised machine learning algorithms to interrogate the

Fear conditioning constitutes the best and most reproducible paradigm to study the neurobiological mechanisms underlying emotions. On the other hand, studies on the synaptic plasticity phenomena underlying fear conditioning present neural circuits enforcing this learning pattern related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Notably, in both humans and the rodent model, fear conditioning and context rely on dependent neurocircuitry in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and hippocampus. In this review, an overview of the role that classical neurotransmitters play in the con

Anhedonia is a transdiagnostic construct that can occur independent of other symptoms of depression; its role in neuropsychiatric disorders that are not primarily affective, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), hoarding disorder (HD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has received limited attention. This paper addresses this gap. First, the data revealed a positive contribution of anhedonia, beyond the effects of general depression, to symptom severity in OCD but not in HD or PTSD. Second, anhedonia was operationalized as a reduced sensitivity to rewards, which allowed employin

OBJECTIVE: The present review aims to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of the α-1-adrenergic antagonist prazosin as primary pharmacologic treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHOD: A systematic review was performed using keywords (i.e., prazosin, α-1-adrenergic antagonist, α-1-blocker, post-traumatic stress disorder) in the databases PubMed/Medline (1966-May 2016), Embase (1966-May 2016), ScienceDirect (1823-May 2016), OvidSP (1946-May 2016) and Nature (1845-May 2016). To be considered for inclusion, studies had to test the efficacy of prazosin either alone or added t

Empirical findings regarding childhood traumatic stress are placed within a developmental life-trajectory model that incorporates a tripartite etiology of posttrauma distress. This approach recognizes an intricate matrix of child-intrinsic factors, developmental maturation and experience, life events, and evolving family and social ecologies. Of central developmental importance in the field of traumatic stress is the ontogenesis of appraisal, emotional response, emotional and physiological regulation, and consideration of protective action with regard to danger. The complexity of traumatic sit

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We synthesize theories proposing complex relations between cognitive functioning and anxiety-related concepts. We evaluate vulnerability theories suggesting that deficits in various cognitive functioning domains predict future anxiety-associated concepts. We examine scar theories asserting the opposite direction of effects (i.e., anxiety predicting cognitive dysfunction). Furthermore, we examine more novel frameworks on this topic.
RECENT FINDINGS: Reliable evidence exists for the scar and vulnerability theories. This includes mounting data on diverse anxiety symptoms predi

Fifty victims of assaults and hold-ups underwent a medical and psychological examination in order to assess the semiological and psychometric features of post-traumatic stress disorder: 27 males and 23 females with a mean age of 41 years were examined 18 months after the traumatic event. The following semiology was observed: excitability, phobic avoidance, distrust, recurrent traumatic nightmares, difficulties in concentration, impaired memory, dysphoric mood, hyperfatigability, recurrent recollection of the traumatic event, headache, middle and terminal sleep disturbances and neurovegetative

A large body of research supports the role of stress in several psychiatric disorders in which anxiety is a prominent symptom. Other research has indicated that the gut microbiome-immune system- brain axis is involved in a large number of disorders and that this axis is affected by various stressors. The focus of the current review is on the following stress-related disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessivecompulsive disorder. Descriptions of systems interacting in the gut-brain axis, microbiome-derived molecu

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic stress disorders are prevalent in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, there is a lack of prospective longitudinal studies investigating the risk of severe mental illness for people diagnosed with traumatic stress disorders. We aimed to assess if patients with acute stress reaction (ASR) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at increased risk of schizophrenia spectrum disorders or bipolar disorder.
