Walking is more like catching than tapping: gait in the elderly as a complex cognitive task.

Walking is generally viewed as an automated, over-learned, rhythmic motor task and may even be considered the lower-limb analog of rhythmic finger tapping, another automated motor task. Thus, one might hypothesize that walking would be associated with a simple rhythmic task like tapping rather than with a complex motor task like catching. Surprisingly, however, we find that among older adults, routine walking has more in common with complex motor tasks, like catching a moving object, than it does with tapping. Tapping performance, including both the average tapping interval and the variability

Obstructive sleep apnoea and 5-year cognitive decline in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and cognitive decline remains controversial, especially in the elderly population. We used data from the HypnoLaus study to assess associations between OSA and longitudinal cognitive changes in a sample of community-dwelling elderly individuals. METHODS: We studied associations between polysomnographic OSA parameters (of breathing/hypoxaemia and sleep fragmentation) and cognitive changes over a 5-year period, after adjustment for potential confounders. The primary outcome was the annual change in cognitive scores. The moderat

Neural correlates of inhibitory control and visual processing in youths with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a counting Stroop functional MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence of inhibitory control and visual processing impairment in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), knowledge about its corresponding alterations in the brain is still evolving. The current study used counting Stroop functional MRI and the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) to investigate if brain activation of inhibitory control and visual processing would differ in youths with ADHD relative to neurotypical youths. METHOD: We assessed 25 youths with ADHD [mean age 10.9 (s.d.=2.2) years] and 23 age-, gender- and IQ-matched neurotyp

HIV and recent illicit drug use interact to affect verbal memory in women.

OBJECTIVE: HIV infection and illicit drug use are each associated with diminished cognitive performance. This study examined the separate and interactive effects of HIV and recent illicit drug use on verbal memory, processing speed, and executive function in the multicenter Women's Interagency HIV Study. METHODS: Participants included 952 HIV-infected and 443 HIV-uninfected women (mean age = 42.8, 64% African-American). Outcome measures included the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised and the Stroop test. Three drug use groups were compared: recent illicit drug users (cocaine or heroin use i

The nature of the automatization deficit in Chinese children with dyslexia.

Clarifying whether automatization deficits constitute the primary causes or symptoms of developmental dyslexia, we focused on three critical issues of the dyslexic automatization deficit, namely universality, domain specificity, and severity. Thirty Chinese dyslexic children (mean age 10 years and 5 months), 30 chronological-age-, and 30 reading-level-matched children were tested in 4 areas of automaticity: motor, visual search, Stroop facilitation effects, and automatic word recognition. The results showed that the dyslexic children performed significantly worse than the CA-controls but not t

Neurocognitive and Motor Performance in Pediatric Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Cross-Sectional Controlled Study.

Background/Objectives: Although kidney transplantation improves survival and quality of life in children with end-stage kidney disease, neurocognitive and motor impairments acquired during chronic kidney disease (CKD) may persist after transplantation. Cognitive-motor evaluations in this population remain limited. This study compared cognitive function, manual dexterity, grip strength, reaction time, and balance between pediatric kidney transplant recipients and healthy peers. Methods: This study included 30 pediatric kidney transplant recipients aged 8-18 years and 30 age- and sex-matched hea

A meal enriched in saturated fat acutely impairs cognitive performance in obese men.

BACKGROUND: Diets chronically high in saturated fat (SFA) associate with obesity and insulin resistance (IR), which in turn associate with cognitive decline and dementia. However, understanding how acute SFA consumption influences cognition is less clear despite short-term SFA-enriched diets inducing whole-body IR. We examined how consuming meals enriched with SFA or monounsaturated fat (MUFA) acutely influence cognitive function in lean and obese men. We hypothesized that greater diet-induced IR following a SFA-enriched meal would associate with decreased cognitive performance. METHODS: Twel

Circulating Cellular Adhesion Molecules and Cognitive Function: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.

OBJECTIVE: Higher circulating concentrations of cellular adhesion molecules (CAMs) can be used as markers of endothelial dysfunction. Given that the brain is highly vascularized, we assessed whether endothelial function is associated with cognitive performance. METHOD: Within the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study, excluding N = 54 with stroke before year 25, we studied CAMs among N = 2,690 black and white men and women in CARDIA year 7 (1992-1993, ages 25-37) and N = 2,848 in CARDIA year 15 (2000-2001, ages 33-45). We included subjects with levels of circulating

Information processing and antiretroviral therapy in HIV-1 infection.

Computerized reaction time (RT) tasks are sensitive measures of subclinical HIV-related mental slowing. We previously reported that nondemented HIV-seropositive patients on antiretroviral therapy at the time of testing had faster choice RTs compared to matched untreated seropositive participants. In the present study, we evaluated the performance of 163 nondemented HIV-seropositive participants on a reaction time version of the Stroop task as a function of antiretroviral status. Persons on antiretroviral therapy at the time of testing had significantly faster reaction times than untreated indi

Assessing Retinal Thickness and Associations with Cognitive Function in Women with History of Preeclampsia.

PURPOSE: Women with preeclampsia are at risk of developing cognitive changes and dementia later in life. The retina - an extension of the brain - may provide insight about structural changes associated with preeclampsia and serve as a biomarker of long-term neural and vascular consequences. Our goal was to compare retinal thickness measurements between women with and without history of preeclampsia, and to determine associations with cognitive performance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study recruited preeclampsia (N=17) and normotensive (N=18) women 10-15 years after delivery

Impaired glucose regulation is associated with poorer performance on the Stroop Task.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for development of cognitive dysfunction. Impairments in glucose regulation have been associated with poorer performance on tests of executive function and information processing speed. METHODS: We administered the Stroop Color Word Task, where higher interference scores are indicative of decreased selective attention, to 98 non-diabetic volunteers (64 m; %fat=37 ± 12; age=36 ± 9 yrs, race=41 NA/30 C/13 H/14 AA) on our inpatient unit. After 3d on a weight maintaining diet, % body fat was measured by DXA and a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)

Prodromal Cognitive Changes as a Prognostic Indicator of Forthcoming Huntington's Disease Severity: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive changes in Huntington's disease (HD) precede motor manifestations. ENROLL-HD platform includes four cognitive measures of information processing speed (IPS). Our group is eager to seek clinical markers in the life stage that is as close as possible to the age of onset (ie, the so called prodromal HD phase) because this is the best time for therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to test whether cognitive scores in prodromal ENROLL-HD mutation carriers show the potential to predict the severity of motor and behavioral changes once HD became fully manifested
