Water-soluble dendritic ligands based on tris-2-(5-sulfonato salicylaldimine ethyl)amine (5) and DAB-(5-sulfonato salicylaldimine) (6) (DAB = diaminobutane) were synthesized by means of Schiff base condensation and sulfonation reactions. We present two methods for the enantioselective analysis of thioridazine (THD) and thioridazine 2-sulfone (THD 2-SO(2)) in human plasma based on liquid-liquid extraction with diethyl ether and chiral resolution of the enantiomers on Chiralpak AD and Chiralcel OD-H columns, respectively. Recent studies have shown that mutations in two amino acid positions of the Pneumocystis carinii dihydropteroate synthase gene are significantly more common in immunocompromised patients with P. carinii pneumonia who fail sulfa or sulfone prophylaxis. This paper reviews the studies that suggest that these mutations may be responsible for some failures of prophylaxis in P. carinii.

The onset of hematochezia with the use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate enemas in an index case prompted us to review our experience with the use of such enemas in neonates. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate enemas were used in 20 of 2317 patients. Of these 20 patients, four (20%) had evidence of hematochezia temporally related to the use of the enemas. No episodes of such bleeding occurred in infants who were older than 29 weeks of gestation or larger than 1250 gm birth weight. A metal- and base-free C(sp2)-H direct arylsulfonylation of secondary and tertiary enamides with aryldiazonium salts and ex situ generated SO2 (from SOgen) is presented. This method runs smoothly to produce β-amidovinyl sulfones with excellent stereoselectivities in moderate to excellent yields. Moreover, this strategy features good functional group tolerance and environmentally benign reaction conditions. Mechanistic experiments indicate that this sulfonylation may proceed in a radical pathway.

Although hydrosulfonylation of alkynes is an ideal process to generate β-keto sulfones, such an approach is rarely implemented. Here we reported a facile and efficient graphitic carbon nitride (p-g-C3N4) photocatalyzed hydrosulfonylation of alkynes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide in aerobic conditions.
