Development of an Explainable Machine Learning Computational Model for the Prediction of Severe Complications After Orchiectomy in Stallions.

The objective of the present study was to apply supervised Machine Learning to predict severe complications after equine orchiectomy. A dataset of 612 cases of orchiectomies in stallions was used for the development of a computational model, among which in 8.5% of cases severe complications (colic, continued stallion-like behaviour, evisceration, funiculitis, haemorrhage, and scrotal infection) were diagnosed post-orchiectomy. Three supervised Machine Learning tools were employed: Logistic Regression (12 different models evaluated), Random Forest (64 models), and Gradient Boosting (8 models).

Minimum Displacement in Existing Moment (MDEM)- A new supervised learning algorithm by incrementally constructing the moments of the underlying classes.

We introduce a supervised learning method that classifies each test point by selecting the class for which its inclusion causes minimum displacement of the class's existing n-th central moment. After each such inclusion, the n-th central moment of the corresponding class is updated by some incremental calculations in constant time, i.e., each class evolves gradually and changes its definition incrementally after the inclusion of every new data point. We then use k-fold and stratified k-fold cross validation techniques to compare the performance of our proposed model with various state of the a

Leveraging machine learning in the global fight against money laundering and terrorism financing: An affordances perspective.

Financial services organisations facilitate the movement of money worldwide, and keep records of their clients' identity and financial behaviour. As such, they have been enlisted by governments worldwide to assist with the detection and prevention of money laundering, which is a key tool in the fight to reduce crime and create sustainable economic development, corresponding to Goal 16 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In this paper, we investigate how the technical and contextual affordances of machine learning algorithms may enable these organisations to accomplish that tas

Predicting Remission in Schizophrenia Using Machine Learning-Assessing the Impact of Sample Size and Predictor Overinclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Machine learning studies sometimes include a high number of predictors relative to the number of training cases. This increases the risk of overfitting and poor generalizability. A recent study hypothesized that between-trial heterogeneity precluded generalizable outcome prediction in schizophrenia from being achieved. However, an alternative explanation is that predictor overinclusion might explain the low generalizability in that analysis. METHODS: Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) item-data, age, sex, and treatment allocation (antipsychotic/placebo) from 18 placebo

Automated cortical thickness and skewness feature selection in bipolar disorder using a semi-supervised learning method.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) broadly affects brain structure, in particular areas involved in emotion processing and cognition. In the last years, the psychiatric field's interest in machine learning approaches has been steadily growing, thanks to the potentiality of automatically discriminating patients from healthy controls. METHODS: In this work, we employed cortical thickness of 58 regions of interest obtained from magnetic resonance imaging scans of 41 BD patients and 34 healthy controls, to automatically identify the regions which are mostly involved with the disease. We used a sem

Dual Cross-Image Semantic Consistency With Self-Aware Pseudo Labeling for Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation.

Semi-supervised learning has proven highly effective in tackling the challenge of limited labeled training data in medical image segmentation. In general, current approaches, which rely on intra-image pixel-wise consistency training via pseudo-labeling, overlook the consistency at more comprehensive semantic levels (e.g., object region) and suffer from severe discrepancy of extracted features resulting from an imbalanced number of labeled and unlabeled data. To overcome these limitations, we present a new Dual Cross-image Semantic Consistency (DuCiSC) learning framework, for semi-supervised me

A hybrid Transformer-CNN framework for uncertainty-guided semi-supervised multiclass eye disease classification with enhanced interpretability.

The accurate classification of eye diseases such as cataract, diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, and healthy conditions from fundus images remains a critical challenge in ophthalmology, requiring early diagnosis and treatment to prevent vision loss. Existing deep learning methods rely on large labeled datasets, inefficient use of unlabeled data, and limited interpretability, restricting clinical applicability. To address these limitations, we propose a novel CNN-Transformer hybrid architecture coupled with innovative semi-supervised learning (SSL) and explainability techniques to enhance mul

DPFR: Semi-supervised gland segmentation via density perturbation and feature recalibration.

In recent years, semi-supervised methods have attracted considerable attention in gland segmentation of histopathological images, as they can substantially reduce the annotation data burden for pathologists. The most widely adopted approach is the Mean-Teacher framework based on consistency regularization, which exploits unlabeled data information through consistency regularization constraints. However, due to the morphological complexity of glands in histopathological images, existing methods still suffer from confusion between glands and background, as well as gland adhesion. To address thes

Integrating orthogonal supervision for sparse semi-supervised 3D medical image segmentation.

Recent advances in semi-supervised learning (SSL) have significantly improved 3D medical image segmentation. However, fully annotating volumetric data slice by slice remains costly and time-consuming. To address this, sparsely annotated SSL has been explored, where only a few representative slices from a limited set of labeled volumes are annotated, while the rest of the 3D data remains unlabeled. Despite this progress, the performance of these methods remains suboptimal, as they typically utilize separate models for each orthgonal view and generate pseudo-labels for the entire volume. This vi

Learning Consistent Semantic Representation for Chest X-ray via Anatomical Localization in Self-Supervised Pre-Training.

Despite the similar global structures in Chest X-ray (CXR) images, the same anatomy exhibits varying appearances across images, including differences in local textures, shapes, colors, etc. Learning consistent representations for anatomical semantics through these diverse appearances poses a great challenge for self-supervised pre-training in CXR images. To address this challenge, we propose two new pre-training tasks: inner-image anatomy localization (IIAL) and cross-image anatomy localization (CIAL). Leveraging the relatively stable positions of identical anatomy across images, we utilize po

HSFSurv: A hybrid supervision framework at individual and feature levels for multimodal cancer survival analysis.

Multimodal data play a significant role in survival analysis, with pathological images providing morphological information about tumors and genomic data offering molecular insights. Leveraging multimodal data for survival analysis has become a prominent research topic. However, the heterogeneity of data poses significant challenges to multimodal integration. While existing methods consider interactions among features from different modalities, the heterogeneity of feature spaces often hinders performance in survival analysis. In this paper, we propose a hybrid supervised framework for survival

Self-supervised learning framework for efficient classification of endoscopic images using pretext tasks.

Identifying anatomical landmarks in endoscopic video frames is essential for the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases. However, this task remains challenging due to variability in visual characteristics across different regions and the limited availability of annotated data. In this study, we propose a novel self-supervised learning (SSL) framework that integrates three complementary pretext task, colorization, jigsaw puzzle solving, and patch prediction, to enhance feature learning from unlabeled endoscopic images. By leveraging these tasks, our model extracts rich, meaningful represe

Cross-Modal self-supervised vision language pre-training with multiple objectives for medical visual question answering.

Medical Visual Question Answering (VQA) is a task that aims to provide answers to questions about medical images, which utilizes both visual and textual information in the reasoning process. The absence of large-scale annotated medical VQA datasets presents a formidable obstacle to training a medical VQA model from scratch in an end-to-end manner. Existing works have been using image captioning dataset in the pre-training stage and fine-tuning to downstream VQA tasks. Following the same paradigm, we use a collection of public medical image captioning datasets to pre-train multimodality models

ECG Abnormality Detection Using MIMIC-IV-ECG Data Via Supervised Contrastive Learning.

Electrocardiogram data provide a tremendous opportunity for the detection of various types of cardiac arrhythmia. Recent advancement in ubiquitous wearable devices with incorporated ECG sensors offers an opportunity for a real-time monitoring system for detecting abnormalities in ECG data. Nevertheless, access to a comprehensive labeled dataset can be expensive and not feasible. As a result, there is a need for a pretraining framework with a minimal amount of labeled data that generates a morphology-aware embedding space. Contrastive learning is a commonly used approach for creating these regu

Classification of Opioid Usage Through Semi-Supervised Learning for Total Joint Replacement Patients.

Opioid misuse and overdose have become a public health hazard and caused drug addiction and death in the United States due to rapid increase in prescribed and non-prescribed opioid usage. The misuse and overdose are highly related to opioid over-prescription for chronic and acute pain treatment, where a one-size-fits-all prescription plan is often adopted but can lead to substantial leftovers for patients who only consume a few. To reduce over-prescription and opioid overdose, each patient's opioid usage pattern should be taken into account. As opioids are often prescribed for patients after t

Direct Cup-to-Disc Ratio Estimation for Glaucoma Screening via Semi-Supervised Learning.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that leads to irreversible vision loss. The Cup-to-Disc Ratio (CDR) serves as the most important indicator for glaucoma screening and plays a significant role in clinical screening and early diagnosis of glaucoma. In general, obtaining CDR is subjected to measuring on manually or automatically segmented optic disc and cup. Despite great efforts have been devoted, obtaining CDR values automatically with high accuracy and robustness is still a great challenge due to the heavy overlap between optic cup and neuroretinal rim regions. In this paper, a direct CDR est
