A2 noradrenergic neurons regulate forced swim test immobility.

The Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat is a widely used animal model of depression, which is characterized by dysregulation of noradrenergic signaling. We previously demonstrated that WKY rats show a unique behavioral profile on the forced swim test (FST), characterized by high levels of immobility upon initial exposure and a greater learning-like response by further increasing immobility upon re-exposure than the genetically related Wistar rats. In the current study we aimed to determine whether altered activation of brainstem noradrenergic cell groups contributes to this behavioral profile. We exposed W

Two-dimensional slither swimming of sperm within a micrometre of a surface.

Sperm motion near surfaces plays a crucial role in fertilization, but the nature of this motion has not been resolved. Using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, we selectively imaged motile human and bull sperm located within one micron of a surface, revealing a distinct two-dimensional (2D) 'slither' swimming mode whereby the full cell length (50-80 μm) is confined within 1 μm of a surface. This behaviour is distinct from bulk and near-wall swimming modes where the flagellar wave is helical and the head continuously rotates. The slither mode is intermittent (∼1 s, ∼70 μm), and

Influence of physical activity in the intake of trihalomethanes in indoor swimming pools.

This study describes the relationship between physical activity and intake of trihalomethanes (THMs), namely chloroform (CHCl3), bromodichloromethane (CHCl2Br), dibromochloromethane (CHClBr2) and bromoform (CHBr3), in individuals exposed in two indoor swimming pools which used different disinfection agents, chlorine (Cl-SP) and bromine (Br-SP). CHCl3 and CHBr3 were the dominant compounds in air and water of the Cl-SP and Br-SP, respectively. Physical exercise was assessed from distance swum and energy expenditure. The changes in exhaled breath concentrations of these compounds were measured fr

An anti-immobility effect of spermine in the forced swim test in mice.

BACKGROUND: Spermine is one of the naturally occurring ligands that influence the function of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor. Similar to other endogenous polyamines present in micromolar concentration in the brain, it may play a role in the modulation of depression. Thus, the present study investigated the suggested antidepressant effect of spermine. METHODS: The mouse forced swim test (FST) was used as a reliable tool that allowed us to determine the antidepressant activity. RESULTS: Spermine, administered intracerebroventricularly (icv), significantly and dose-dependently reduced the im

Infant swimming in chlorinated pools and the risks of bronchiolitis, asthma and allergy.

Recent studies suggest that swimming in chlorinated pools during infancy may increase the risks of lower respiratory tract infection. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of swimming in chlorinated pools on the risks of bronchiolitis and its late consequences. A total of 430 children (47% female; mean age 5.7 yrs) in 30 kindergartens were examined. Parents completed a questionnaire regarding the child's health history, swimming practice and potential confounders. Attendance at indoor or outdoor chlorinated pools ever before the age of 2 yrs was associated with an increased

An epidemiological investigation of an outbreak of leptospirosis associated with swimming, Beaufort, Sabah.

From October 13 to October 21, 1999, a total of 46 males, aged 8 to 19 years, were admitted to Beaufort Hospital after swimming in the creek near an oil palm plantation in Kampung (Kg) Kebatu, Beaufort. Thirty (30) presented with symptoms including fever, vomiting, bodyache, giddiness, headache, chest pain and cough, while 16 others, were asymptomatic. One, a 15 year old boy, died from haemorrhagic shock secondary to pulmonary haemorrhage. The onset of the illness was from 11 October to 19 October 1999. A case-control study found that the outbreak was associated with swimming in the creek (p<0

Influence of antiepileptics on efficacy of antidepressant drugs in forced swimming test.

Antidepressant medications are indicated in a variety of sustained mood disorders, including depression, and in epileptic patients. On the other hand, some antiepileptics are also used in the treatment of affective disorders. Therefore, some interactions may appear between antiepileptics and antidepressant drugs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of the treatment with antiepileptic drugs on the antidepressants' activity in mice (forced swimming test or assessment of locomotor activity). The animals received intraperitoneally (ip) antiepileptics: phenytoin (PHT) at 6

A community outbreak of Cryptosporidium infection associated with a swimming pool complex.

A case-control study was conducted to investigate the cause of a sudden increase in cases of cryptosporidiosis notified to the Brisbane Southside Public Health Unit from January to March 1998. Fifty-two eligible cases were identified over a three-week period early in 1998. Thirty-one of these cases and 21 control subjects participated in the study. Swimming in the 2 weeks before onset of illness was identified as a likely risk factor for cryptosporidiosis infection (OR 3.1, CI 0.8-12.6, P = 0.06). Analysis of swimming pool attendance identified swimming at Pool Complex A as a significant risk

A kinematic comparison of forward and backward swimming in the eel anguilla anguilla.

In addition to forward undulatory swimming, eels (and some other elongated swimmers) can swim backwards in a similar way. We compared the kinematics (wave speed, cycle frequency, amplitude, local bending and estimated muscle strain) of forward and backward swimming in the European eel Anguilla anguilla. Both swimming modes are characterised by a wave of undulation that travels over the body in the direction opposite to that of swimming. We observe two major kinematic differences. First, the slope of wave frequency against swimming speed is significantly higher for backward than for forward swi

Reduction of swimming time in mice through interaction of infrasound and alcohol.

The effects of noise, alcohol, and the combination of the two were studied on muscular fatigue in several mouse strains to investigate a possible interaction between the two stresses. Muscular fatigue was measured by latency to submersion during a forced-swimming test. Animals were exposed to acoustic stimuli of fixed frequency and intensity for 2h preceding the test. Ethanol was administered orally from 30 min to 3h 30 min prior to testing. Alcohol doses and sound intensities were subliminal when administered separately. While no significant interaction occurred between alcohol and audible so

Changes in muscle coordination during butterfly swimming at submaximal and maximal efforts.

The aim of this study was to clarify the changes in muscle coordination during butterfly swimming at different swimming speeds. Eight female swimmers performed 25 m butterfly at 60%, 80% and 100% effort. Two-dimensional motion analysis was conducted using video data. Surface electromyography was recorded from 12 muscles in the right upper limb, lower limb, and trunk, and muscle synergies were identified using non-negative matrix factorisation. The kinematic analysis showed that the catch phase of the arm stroke shortened with increasing speeds. For most swimmers, four muscle synergies were ext

Microtubule-stabilizer epothilone B counteracts anesthetic-induced slowed swimming in Tetrahymena pyriformis.

Volatile anesthetics that reversibly render humans immobile and unconscious have analogous reversible effects on the motility of non-neural organisms including plants and single cells. The molecular mechanisms by which they do this remain unclear, but are difficult to study in mammals because of complex interactions among diverse tissues and cell types. Here we use freely available software to study cell swimming speeds in the single-celled ciliate species Tetrahymena pyriformis. We first extend previous findings with other volatile anesthetics, to show that isoflurane also reversibly slows sw

Physical characteristics of Olympic trial qualifiers versus non-qualifiers in competitive swimming.

BACKGROUND: High-performance swimming requires specific physical attributes to optimize propulsion and minimize drag. While start, turn, and underwater phases are critical, comprehensive comparisons of physical characteristics between elite and sub-elite swimmers remain limited. This study aimed to investigate whether differences exist in physical characteristics related to performance between high-performance competitive swimmers (Olympic trial qualifiers) and average competitive swimmers. METHODS: Thirty-three male competitive swimmers were enrolled in this prospective observational study.

Soft Swimming Robot Driven by Electroosmotic Propulsion with Silent and Programmable Locomotion.

Soft robotic systems operating in liquid environments require propulsion mechanisms that combine structural compliance, stable thrust generation, and low hydrodynamic disturbance. However, conventional mechanical propulsion methods often rely on moving components that generate acoustic noise, pulsatile flow, and turbulence, limiting their use in delicate fluidic environments. Here, we present a centimeter-scale fully soft swimming robot powered by an integrated electroosmotic microchannel propulsion module. Each compact module, with a volume of 0.04 cm3, incorporates 120 parallel microchannels

Persistence of specialized bacteria during disinfectant challenge in a new swimming pool.

Swimming pools represent a unique aquatic environment, with continuous bacterial inoculation from swimmers and high disinfectant levels to control microbial growth. Whether, how, and which groups of bacteria can survive this strong disinfectant stress and pose a potential threat to swimmer health remain poorly understood. This study leveraged the unique opportunity of a newly opened swimming pool to address these questions. Analysis of bacterial community structures in water revealed that disinfectants substantially and temporarily simplified bacterial communities, with only a few dominant spe

A Non-Invasive Gas Exchange Monitor To Assess Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema.

INTRODUCTION: Swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE) occurs in physically demanding environments. SIPE has been identified among U.S. Naval Special Warfare (NSW) candidates, risking trainees' lives or, less severely, preventing them from completing training. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and chest X-ray. The MediPines gas exchange monitor AGM-100 is a noninvasive diagnostic tool approved by the FDA and used in hospital settings. This study aimed to assess noninvasive physiological parameters and evaluate the use of the AGM-100 in NSW candidates with SIPE. METHODS: In this observ

Size-Dependent Agonistic Interaction Patterns in Juvenile Male Swimming Crabs (Portunus trituberculatus).

Body size is a key determinant of agonistic interactions in swimming crabs. This study quantified agonistic interactions during pairwise contests among different size classes. Four size classes of male juveniles, Portunus trituberculatus, were examined (extra-large: 70.16 ± 1.12 g; large: 45.07 ± 1.15 g; medium: 25.30 ± 1.19 g; small: 15.08 ± 1.73 g; n = 12 per size class). The frequency and duration of agonistic behaviors and fighting intensity were recorded by a video recording system and analyzed. Larger crabs initiated more frequent and intense aggressive interactions, whereas smaller crab

Swimming turns reduce energy demands of the aerobic performance in front crawl.

PURPOSE: Performances in short-course (SC, 25 m) are typically faster than in long-course (LC, 50 m), largely due to the greater number of turns, but the specific energetic contribution of turns has not yet been quantified. This study tested the hypothesis that turns reduce the overall energy cost (C) in swimming, providing an energetic advantage in SC over LC. METHODS: Eleven male swimmers completed two randomized sessions in SC and LC pools, each consisting of five 400-m front crawl trials at submaximal intensity (70-86% of race velocity) paced by an underwater light system. Turn and clean
