Syringe access for the prevention of blood borne infections among injection drug users.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one-third of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome cases in the United States are associated with the practice of sharing of injection equipment and are preventable through the once-only use of syringes, needles and other injection equipment. DISCUSSION: Sterile syringes may be obtained legally by 4 methods depending on the state. They may be purchased over the counter, prescribed, obtained at syringe exchange programs or furnished by authorized agencies. Each of these avenues has advantages and disadvantages; therefore, legal access through all means is the most likely

Microprocessor-controlled local anesthesia versus the conventional syringe technique in hair transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Local anesthesia by the traditional injection technique is central to optimizing patient comfort during hair transplant procedures. However, even when carefully and properly performed, some patients still describe their treatment sessions as painful. OBJECTIVE: To determine if patients undergoing hair transplantation experience less pain and discomfort when their local anesthesia is performed with the Wand (as of spring 2001, the Wand has been renamed "CompuMed- Featuring the Wand Handpiece"), a microprocessor pump that precisely controls the infusion rate and pressure of local an

Intraductal collagenase delivery into the human pancreas using syringe loading or controlled perfusion.

Effective intraductal delivery of the enzyme collagenase into the pancreas is crucial to the subsequent ability to isolate viable islets. Most clinical islet transplant centers load the enzyme into the pancreas by retrograde injection using a syringe following cannulation of the pancreatic duct. An alternative approach is to perfuse the pancreas via the pancreatic duct with collagenase solution using a recirculating perfusion device system. This provides control over perfusion pressures and collagenase temperature. This study reports on our evaluation of the delivery of Liberase-HI into the pa

The Stealth Hazard: Tungsten in Prefilled Syringes Induces mRNA Degradation and Functional Loss in Lipid Nanoparticles Despite Apparent Biophysical Stability.

The rapid development of mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as delivery systems. The advantages of prefilled syringes (PFSs) in mRNA-LNP administration are widely recognized. The compatibility of mRNA-LNP drugs with tungsten in PFSs has not yet been investigated. In this study, we used polyadenylic acid (Poly A) as an mRNA model to conduct accelerated stability experiments under conditions of 4 °C, 25 °C, and light exposure, examining the effects of three tungsten sources (commercial salts or tungsten extracted from syring

Chemical-gas Sterilization of External Surface of Polymer-based Prefilled Syringes and Its Effect on Stability of Model Therapeutic Protein.

To reduce the risk of infection during intravitreal injections, the external surface of prefilled syringes (PFSs) must be sterilized. Usually, ethylene oxide (EO) gas or vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) is used for sterilization. More recently, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sterilization has been developed. It is known that gas permeability is approximately zero into glass-PFSs. However, polymer-PFSs (P-PFSs) have relatively high gas permeability. Therefore, there are concerns about the potential impact of external surface sterilization on drug solutions in P-PFSs. In this study, P-PFSs [filled

Investigation of the Sterility of Diluent in Prefilled Syringes Used for Vaccine Reconstitution at Department of Defense Recruit Training Sites.

INTRODUCTION: Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) and varicella (VAR) vaccines are the two vaccines administered in large recruit training sites (RTS) that require a single-use syringe to be prefilled with the diluent (ie water) before vaccine reconstitution. Since there are no preservatives in either MMR or VAR vaccines, it is critical to maintain the diluent sterile to ensure the sterility of the reconstituted vaccine. The Department of Defense/Defense Health Agency has instructions on reconstitution of lyophilized vaccines and guidelines for their storage. Vaccine manufacturers provide instru

Impact of Ethylene Oxide Sterilization of Polymer-Based Prefilled Syringes on Chemical Degradation of a Model Therapeutic Protein During Storage.

Materials from prefilled syringe systems-such as silicone oil, tungsten, glass, and rubber-may enhance therapeutic protein aggregation and particle formation. Also, the sterilization method used for syringes may impact aggregation and chemical degradation of biologics during storage. Syringes are generally sterilized by radiation, ethylene oxide gas (EO), or steam. Among the sterilization methods, EO has the potential to cause chemical degradation by the formation of adducts with susceptible amino acid residues in the protein. In this study, EO- and steam-sterilized syringes were compared to d

Liquid drugs and high dead space syringes may keep HIV and HCV prevalence high - a comparison of Hungary and Lithuania.

Despitevery similar political, drug policy and HIV prevention backgrounds, HIV and HCV prevalence is considerably different in Hungary (low HIV and moderate HCV prevalence) and Lithuania (high HCV and moderate HIV prevalence). Wecompared the drug use profile of Hungarian (n = 215) and Lithuanian (n = 300) injecting drug users (IDUs). Overall, compared with IDUs in Hungary, IDUs in Lithuania often injected opiates purchased in liquid form ('shirka'), used and shared 2-piece syringes (vs. 1-piece syringes) disproportionately more often, were less likely to acquire their syringes from legal sourc

The Prison Economy of Needles and Syringes: What Opportunities Exist for Blood Borne Virus Risk Reduction When Prices Are so High?

AIM: A formal Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is not provided in Australian prisons. Injecting equipment circulates in prisons as part of an informal and illegal economy. This paper examined how this economy generates blood-borne virus (BBV) risk and risk mitigation opportunities for inmates. METHOD: The HITS-p cohort recruited New South Wales inmates who had reported ever injecting drugs and who had a negative HCV serological test within 12 months prior to enrolment. For this study, qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 participants enrolled in HITS-p. Participants included 10 women
