Development of a prediction model for bacteremia in hospitalized adults with cellulitis to aid in the efficient use of blood cultures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis is a common infectious disease. Although blood culture is frequently used in the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of cellulitis, it is a contentious diagnostic test. To help clinicians determine which patients should undergo blood culture for the management of cellulitis, a diagnostic scoring system referred to as the Bacteremia Score of Cellulitis was developed. METHODS: Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed as part of a retrospective cohort study of all adults diagnosed with cellulitis in a tertiary teaching hospital in Taiwan in

Patient-doctor communication.

Communication is an important component of patient care. Traditionally, communication in medical school curricula was incorporated informally as part of rounds and faculty feedback, but without a specific or intense focus on skills of communicating per se. The reliability and consistency of this teaching method left gaps, which are currently getting increased attention from medical schools and accreditation organizations. There is also increased interest in researching patient-doctor communication and recognizing the need to teach and measure this specific clinical skill. In 1999, the Accredit

Atypical imaging characteristics in patients with epithelial tumors of lacrimal gland and impact on initial surgical planning.

PRECIS: Approximately one-quarter of lacrimal gland masses present with imaging findings not consistent with standard teaching for benign vs. malignant; it is prudent to do gross total resection in such cases if eye-sparing surgery is possible. BACKGROUND: Epithelial lacrimal gland tumors are rare. The initial surgical decision to do an incisional biopsy vs. gross total resection depends largely on the radiologic characteristics of the lacrimal gland mass. Occasionally, the reported radiologic features attributed to benign vs. malignant lacrimal gland tumors do not hold. In this report, we wi

Malaria test positivity, Plasmodium species distribution, and risk factors in Ho Municipality, Ghana: a retrospective analysis of seasonal and demographic trends (2020-2022).

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Ghana. However, heterogeneous transmission necessitates localized data for effective subnational targeting of control measures. The Ho Municipality, characterized by high rainfall and humidity ideal for year-round mosquito breeding, exemplifies a setting where such detailed epidemiological intelligence is needed but currently scarce. This study aimed to bridge this gap by analysing facility-based trends to inform precision public health interventions in this vulnerable region. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study, perfor

A student-led demonstration project on fall prevention in a long-term care facility.

Falls are a frequent and serious problem facing people aged 65 and older. The incidence of falls increases with greater numbers of intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors and can be reduced by risk modification and targeted interventions. Falls account for 70% of accidental deaths in persons aged 75 and older. Mortality due to falls is significantly higher for older adults living in extended care facilities versus those living in the community. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of a fall prevention training program in a long-term care setting. A single-group repeated-measure design

Family Game Show-style Didactic for Teaching Nervous System Disorders during Emergency Medicine Training.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine residents and medical students. INTRODUCTION: The field of emergency medicine requires learners to build a vast library of illness scripts to be accessible in a rapid manner. Illness scripts are refined and reinforced as senior physicians teach learners common associations between diagnoses, presentation, workup findings, and treatment modalities.1 In order to examine these associations, we developed a didactic session based on the popular television game show "Family Feud" to teach important neurologic conditions related to emergency medicine. This lecture was de
