Cell types of the hyperstriatum ventrale of the domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus): a Golgi study.

Two major classes of neurons were observed in Golgi impregnated material of two regions of the hyperstriatum ventrale (HV) (medial and rostral HV) of the chick telencephalon: a Golgi I type neuron with long axon (putative projection neuron) and a Golgi II type neuron with short axon (putative local circuit neuron). On the basis of the nature of the axon (bifurcating or non-bifurcating, ascending or descending) and of the dendrites (spiny or aspinous, and thickness), the following subclasses (types) were identified: two long axon (projection) and three short axon (local circuit) neurons in the

[Locked-in syndrome with bilateral midbrain infarcts--report of an autopsy].

A case of "Locked-in" syndrome with bilateral midbrain infarcts was reported. A 51-year-old man had a memory disturbance and a change of his personality after head trauma, and then became rapidly "Locked-in" state. He was quadriplegic and bulbar paralytic, but ocular movements were preserved. Left VAG showed the narrowing of the basilar artery and there was a striking anastomosis between the SCA and PICA. Neuropathological findings were as the following; 1) The lateral two third of bilateral cerebral peduncles were extensively infarcted. 2) There were contusion of the left frontal orbital surf

[Long term survival of holoprosencephaly with shunting procedure (author's transl)].

A long survived case of holoprosencephaly with hydrocephalus has been infrequently reported in the literature. One such case were presented on this report. This male baby by cesarean section because of his large head circumferenced 45 cm. He was admitted to our clinic diagnosed as congenital hydrocephalus at the third day from birth. On admission the circumference of his head was measured 49 cm, but other external malformations were not noticed. Right transaxillary carotid angiogram showed anterior cerebral artery appeared like azygos anterior cerebral artery. Absence of falx and fornix were s

The telodiencephalic ischemic syndrome.

A new cerebral syndrome is described which occurs rather frequently with ischemia affecting the common pathway of the internal carotid and middle cerebral arteries. The syndrome consists of contralateral brachiofacial hemiparesis, possibly with hemianopia and/or aphasia, and ipsilateral thermoregulatory hemihypohidrosis with an ipsilateral central Horner syndrome. It is caused by an ischemic lesion of the crossed pathways descending from the cerebrum and the uncrossed hypothalamo-spinal sympathetic pathways descending through the subthalamic region. It is suggested to name the syndrome "telodi

Bilateral cavitations of ganglionic eminence: a fetal MR imaging sign of halted brain development.

Ganglionic eminence is the main transitory proliferative structure of the ventral telencephalon in human fetal brain and it contributes for at least 35% to the population of cortical interneurons; however data on the human GE anomalies are scarce. We report 5 fetal MR imaging observations with bilateral symmetric cavitations in their GE regions resembling an inverted open C shape and separating the GE itself form the deeper parenchyma. Imaging, neuropathology, and follow-up features suggested a malformative origin. All cases had in common characteristics of lissencephaly with agenesis or sever

Dose-dependent functions of Fgf8 in regulating telencephalic patterning centers.

Mouse embryos bearing hypomorphic and conditional null Fgf8 mutations have small and abnormally patterned telencephalons. We provide evidence that the hypoplasia results from decreased Foxg1 expression, reduced cell proliferation and increased cell death. In addition, alterations in the expression of Bmp4, Wnt8b, Nkx2.1 and Shh are associated with abnormal development of dorsal and ventral structures. Furthermore, nonlinear effects of Fgf8 gene dose on the expression of a subset of genes, including Bmp4 and Msx1, correlate with a holoprosencephaly phenotype and with the nonlinear expression of

Cerebral cysticercosis by Taenia crassiceps in a domestic cat.

Cerebral cysticercosis by Taenia crassiceps was diagnosed in an adult female domestic shorthair cat. The animal was euthanized 6 weeks after the initial presentation with signs of vomiting, lethargy, and ataxia. The disease took an intermittent relapsing course with the neurological signs progressing eventually to recumbancy and coma. At necropsy, numerous cysticerci were found in the dilated left lateral ventricle and the adjacent brain parenchyma. The cysticerci were identified as metacestodes of T. crassiceps larvae based on size and morphology of the cysts; shape, number, and size of the r

Oculo-palatal-cerebral syndrome: a second case.

Oculo-palato-cerebral syndrome is an extremely rare disorder consisting of low birth weight, microcephaly, short stature, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, microphthalmia, large ears, small hands and feet, cleft palate, joint hypermobility, developmental delay, and cerebral atrophy. There has been one report of a consanguineous family with three affected children, suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance. We report on the second case of this disorder. Our patient, a 2-year-old boy, had growth delay, microcephaly, bilateral persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous with right microphth

The development of the human brain, including the longitudinal zoning in the diencephalon at stage 15.

Twenty-six embryos (6-11 mm) of stage 15 (approximately 33 days) were studied in detail and graphic reconstructions of three of them were prepared. Characteristic features of this stage include closed lens vesicles, presence of nasal pits, and retinal pigment. The neuromeric pattern is still visible. Each cerebral hemisphere is limited by the torus hemisphericus internally and by the di-telencephalic sulcus externally. The medial (diencephalic) eminence of the basal nuclei (previously misinterpreted by others as the lateral) had appeared in stage 14, and the lateral eminence, which is telencep

[In the boundaries of aphasia].

The anatomical boundaries of those structures whose lesion leads to the disturbances of language are indistintic and largely exceed the classical "areas of language", including subcortical structures as the thalamus and the non-dominant hemisphere. It is equally indistinct the possibility of definition of aphasic disturbances. On one hand aphasia can be seen within the realm of decodification, as a failure of a mental rather than of a verbal process, close to dementia, while among the codification mechanisms motor aphasia can appear a syndrome of phonetic desintegration with component of aprax

Demarcation of ventral territories by the homeobox gene NKX2.1 during early chick development.

Members of the NK-2 homeobox gene family are expressed in distinct parts of the central nervous system and in other non-neural territories not only in the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster, but also in vertebrates. The murine Nkx2.1 (TTF-1, T/ebp) gene was previously shown to be active and indispensable in the developing forebrain, hypophysis, thyroid and lung. Here we report the early transcript distribution of the chick NKX2.1 gene. By whole-mount in situ hybridization we detect a novel transient expression domain in the early epiblast. Further expression occurs in the ventral medial endoderm

The origin of somatostatin fibers in the median eminence and neural lobe of Rana temporaria.

A light microscopic immunocytochemical study of the brain of frogs with hypothalamic lesions was performed in order to obtain evidence concerning the origin of somatostatin fibers in the median eminence and neural lobe of the hypophysis. The results indicate that the somatostatin fibers of the neural lobe originate from somatostatin perikarya located in the prechiasmatic part of the hypothalamus and possibly also in the telencephalon. The somatostatin neurons of the pars ventralis tuberis cinerei do not send axons to the neural lobe. The frog median eminence contains axon terminals of somatost

Numerical and length densities of microvessels in the human brain: Correlation with preferential orientation of microvessels in the cerebral cortex, subcortical grey matter and white matter, pons and cerebellum.

To provide basic data on the local differences in density of microvessels between various parts of the human brain, including representative grey and white matter structures of the cerebral hemispheres, the brain stem and the cerebellum, we quantified the numerical density NV and the length density LV of microvessels in two human brains. We aimed to correlate the density of microvessels with previously published data on their preferential orientation (anisotropy). Microvessels were identified using immunohistochemistry for laminin in 32 samples harvested from the following brain regions of two

Transcriptomic identification and developmental mapping of nrg3b expression in zebrafish.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neuregulin 3 (NRG3) is an epidermal growth factor-like ligand that is involved in neuronal circuit formation in mammals. However, the expression profile of its zebrafish ortholog, nrg3b, remains poorly defined. The transcriptomic analyses of zebrafish sco-spondin mutants, which display alterations in their neurodevelopmental pathways, have indicated potential dysregulation of Nrg3b. Guided by these insights, this study aimed to characterize the temporal and spatial expression patterns of nrg3b in vivo in embryonic and adult zebrafish. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Publicly available

Astrocytic and microglial cell functions in neuroinflammatory diseases and their animal models.

Neurodegenerative diseases are frequently accompanied by inflammatory responses and alterations in lipid metabolism, both of which are believed to negatively affect neural regeneration in mammals. In addition to immune cells, glial cells such as astrocytes and microglia contribute significantly to these inflammatory processes, and it is now recognized that lipid droplet accumulation and cholesterol metabolism are dysregulated in these glial cells. Consequently, recent studies have examined inflammation and lipid metabolism from the standpoint of glial cell function; however, effective therapeu

Radiological Characterization of Cerebral Phenotype in Newborn Microcephaly Cases from 2015 Outbreak in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Brazil is facing, since October of 2015, an outbreak of microcephalic fetuses. This outbreak is correlated with the beginning of circulation of Zika virus (ZIKV) in the country. Although it is clear that the size of the head is diminished in these fetuses, the brain phenotype associated with these malformations is unknown. METHODS: We collected computed tomography images of the microcephaly cases from the region of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, from September 2015 to February 2016. FINDINGS: The microcephalies derived from the current outbreak are associated with intracerebral ca

The microanatomical structure of the cistern of the lamina terminalis.

Microanatomical dissection was performed on 14 formalin-fixed human cadaveric head specimens to provide information relevant for surgical procedures involving the cistern of the lamina terminalis (LT). The cistern of the LT was located in the midline of the telencephalon and was tent-shaped. The superior wall was located between the septal areas bilaterally, the lateral walls leaned laterally downwards, the anterior wall was the integrated line of the bilateral leptomeninges, the posterior and the inferoposterior walls were composed of the LT, the inferior margin was the arachnoid membrane bet

The stress response in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.): identification and functional characterization of the corticotropin-releasing factor (crf) paralogs.

Corticotropin-Releasing Factor (CRF) is one of the main mediators of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Interrenal (HPI) axis to stress response. In Atlantic salmon, a comparative understanding of the crf1 paralogs role in the stress response is still incomplete. Our database searches have identified four crf1 genes in Atlantic salmon, named crf1a1, crf1a2, crf1b1 and crf1b2. Brain distribution analysis revealed that the four crf1 paralogs were widely distributed, and particularly abundant in the telencephalon, midbrain, and hypothalamus of Atlantic salmon post-smolts. To increase the knowledge on crf

Early neurogenesis of the mouse olfactory nerve: Golgi and electron microscopic studies.

The early neurogenesis of the mouse olfactory nerve, from its exist at the nasal epithelium to its entrance into the embryonic telencephalon, has been investigated by using the rapid Golgi method and electron microscopy. Previously unrecognized anatomical and possible functional interrelationships between developing olfactory nerve axons and their sheath cells have been observed: 1) at their exit from sensory epithelium (nasal compartment), 2) at their contact with the CNS surface (intracranial compartment), and 3) at their entrance into the embryonic telencephalon (central nervous tissue comp
