A case of mushroom shape temporal bone osteoma.

A cranial vault Osteoma is relatively common benign tumor. Mushroom shaped skull osteoma is, however, extremely rare. Twenty seven years old female developed slow growing hard mass posterior to the ear. CT scan revealed a mushroom shaped osseous mass approximately 2.5 cm in diameter protruding from the temporal bone at the site of asterion. And the tumor was located over the right sigmoid sinus. The sigmoid sinus engraved approximately 4mm to the tumor and had a branching to one emissaries' vein. Operation was performed under general anesthesia. The tumor was excised first by cutting the base

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the temporal bone.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is an uncommon non-neoplastic reactive tumor that occurs almost exclusively within the mandible and maxilla and can be locally aggressive. Only sporadic cases involving the skull base have been reported. However, this lesion is probably underappreciated because it might be unrecognized or misdiagnosed. We present a case of GCRG of the left temporal bone that was treated surgically via a combined transtemporal-subtemporal approach. A short literature review about diagnosis, clinical behavior and treatment of this tumor entity is given.

Histopathological temporal bone study of the metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma.

We describe the histopathological temporal bone findings of metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma in the patient with hearing loss and facial nerve paralysis. A 45-year-old female was admitted to the hospital with a mass of the left tibia. Surgical operation was performed and the pathological diagnosis was alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. She showed left facial palsy and bilateral hearing loss. She was pronounced dead because of respiratory arrest caused by multiple metastases including meningeal metastasis after 14 months of total clinical course. Histological examination of the temporal bone revealed that t

Computed tomographic anatomy of the canine temporal bone.

This study aims to identify and describe structures of the temporal bone in normal dogs that can be depicted using computed tomography (CT). Five normal dogs of different breeds and both sexes ranging from 0.5 to 8 years were used as the study material. CT images of 2 mm thickness without abnormalities in the temporal bone were reviewed and analysed in bone and soft tissue settings. All images were compared with corresponding E 12 plastic-embedded cross sections of 3 mm thickness, which were acquired from anatomic cross sections of frozen beagles. The sections were provided from the Department

Temporal bone density measurements using CT in otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the bone density around the bony labyrinth in otosclerosis patients and to compare it to that of a control population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective case-control study. Ten patients with otosclerosis (mean age 42 years; range 24-55 years) and 33 control patients with vestibular schwannoma (mean age 46 years; range 20-71 years) were included. All patients underwent a clinical examination, audiometry and a CT scan comprising axial and coronal views of both temporal bones. In the otosclerosis group, audiometry showed unilateral involvement in six patients and

Efferent system degeneration in the human temporal bone.

Sense organ deposits have been described in temporal bones from patients with vestibular neuronitis, Meniere's disease, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo that are not found in a comparable series of temporal bones without vestibulopathy. Because the recurrent vestibulopathies are caused by vestibular ganglionitis and the vestibulocochlear anastomosis was degenerated in these temporal bones, the deposits may represent the end buds of regenerating efferent axons injured in passage through the vestibular ganglion. Such neural buds have been described with transmission electron microscopy i

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the temporal bone.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is an uncommon non-neoplastic lesion that typically occurs in the mandible and maxilla: however, its involvement with the temporal bone is rare. It is usually misdiagnosed as a giant cell tumor. Although regarded as a benign process, GCRG may be locally aggressive. In this paper, we describe two cases of GCRG of the temporal bone and review the pertinent literature published in English. The clinical course, histological evaluation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of GCRG of the temporal bone were investigated.

Temporal bone CT findings in the CHARGE association.

Ten out of 20 cases with the CHARGE association and two CHARGE-like cases underwent temporal bone CT scanning and/or MRI: they all showed bilateral aplasia of the semicircular canals and obliteration of the oval windows. Vestibular examination was performed in nine CHARGE cases and the two CHARGE-like cases, which disclosed vestibular areflexia in all of them. Of the 16 evaluable CHARGE cases, eight had bilateral mixed hearing impairment, while eight had sensorineural hearing impairment which was bilateral in six and unilateral in two cases. Temporal bone CT scanning is therefore indicated in

Hearing loss and temporal bone structure in achondroplasia.

Characteristic temporal bone changes have recently been defined by high resolution CT in nine patients with achondroplasia (Cobb et al., Am J Neuroradiol 9:1195, 1988). These included narrowing of the skull base and "towering" petrous ridges resulting in abnormal orientation of the inner and middle ear structures. In order to determine whether these morphologic changes are the cause of the hearing deficit in achondroplasia, audiometric studies and ENT evaluation were performed in eight of the nine patients. All had a history of frequent otitis media and four had experienced tympanic membrane t

Evaluation and management of temporal bone arachnoid granulations.

The diagnosis and evaluation of temporal bone arachnoid granulations (AGs) is based on characteristic bone defects in the posterior or middle fossa surfaces of the temporal bone in adult patients with persistent serous otitis media or septic meningitis following acute otitis media. The cerebrospinal communication caused by AGs should be repaired by a middle fossa craniotomy (middle fossa AGs) or an intact canal wall mastoidectomy (posterior fossa AGs) to preserve normal sound transmission. In adult patients with chronic mastoiditis, the dural defect of an AG may permit intracranial extension o

Intratemporal facial nerve anastomosis: a temporal bone study.

The temporal bone findings in a patient who suffered a transverse temporal bone fracture and subsequently underwent intratemporal facial nerve anastomosis are presented. The patient returned a year after surgery with otorrhea and partial return of facial function that was documented clinically, and by electromyograph 12 days before death. The temporal bone shows breakdown of the posterior external canal wall and infection of the surgical cavity. At the facial nerve anastomosis, there is a fibrosis and lack of myelination in the few regenerating nerve fibers. These results demonstrate a seldom-

Temporal bone trauma: high-resolution computed tomographic evaluation.

High-resolution computed tomography (CT) was used to examine 12 patients with temporal bone trauma. The CT findings were correlated with the clinical signs and symptoms (hearing loss, facial nerve dysfunction) and with the operative findings in the 5 patients who underwent surgery. CT was able to demonstrate ossicular chain disruption or fractures causing the clinical findings in the majority of cases. The CT findings affected patient care by alerting the otologist to the abnormalities likely to be encountered during surgery.
