Exploring Patterns of the Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems among Adolescents in High-Risk Appalachian (U.S.A) Communities.

Background: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use among adolescents in the United States (U.S.) has surpassed conventional tobacco products (CTPs), including cigarettes. Increasingly, ENDS are used concurrently with CTPs and substances such as cannabis. However, few studies involve Central Appalachia, a region with historically high rates of tobacco and other substance use. Objective:  To examine prevalence of concurrent use of ENDS and cannabis among school-going adolescents in Appalachian Tennessee and delineate associations between ENDS use and substance-related risk behavior (can

Blastomyces dermatitidis lysate antigens: antibody detection in serial serum specimens from dogs with blastomycosis.

Yeast phase lysate antigens prepared from different isolates of Blastomyces dermatitidis (T-58, dog-Tennessee; T-27, polar bear-Tennessee; ERC-2, dog-Wisconsin; ER-3, woodpile-Wisconsin) were compared with respect to the detection of antibodies (indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-ELISA, peroxidase system) in 126 serial serum specimens (pre-treatment, 30 and 60 days post-treatment with itraconazole) from 42 dogs with diagnosed blastomycosis. Mean absorbance values observed with the four lysate antigens at the three treatment intervals ranged from the most reactive to the least reactive

Effects of sediment containing coal ash from the Kingston ash release on embryo-larval development in the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas (Rafinesque, 1820).

The largest environmental release of coal ash in US history occurred in December 2008 with the failure of a retention structure at the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston Fossil Fuel Plant in East Tennessee. A byproduct of coal-burning power plants, coal ash is enriched in metals and metalloids such as selenium and arsenic with known toxicity to fish embryonic and larval life stages. The early development of fish embryos and larvae during contact exposures to river bottom sediments containing up to 78 % coal ash from the Kingston spill was examined in 7-day laboratory tests with the fathead mi

The Cambrian (Guzhangian; Marjuman) kingstoniid trilobite Kingstonia Walcott, 1924 in Laurentian North America.

Kingstonia Walcott, 1924 is widespread across Laurentian North America in Upper Marjuman (Guzhangian) strata. It is recorded from mixed carbonate-siliciclastic, storm-influenced facies, such as the Nolichucky Formation of Tennessee and the Sullivan Formation of Alberta, as well as shallow subtidal carbonates, including the Du Noir Formation of Wyoming. The genus ranges from the shelf interior in areas such as South Dakota to the Laurentian continental margin in Quebec and Newfoundland. This monograph focuses on the abundant material from shelf margin faunas of the Shallow Bay Formation of west

Sustained transmission of mumps in a highly vaccinated population: assessment of primary vaccine failure and waning vaccine-induced immunity.

From January to July 1991, an outbreak of mumps occurred in Maury County, Tennessee. At the primarily affected high school, where 98% of students and all but 1 student with mumps had been vaccinated before the outbreak, 68 mumps cases occurred among 1116 students (attack rate, 6.1%). Students vaccinated before 1988 (the first year mumps vaccination was required for school attendance in Tennessee) may have been at greater risk of mumps than those vaccinated later (65[6.1%] of 1001 vs. 2[2.2%] of 89; risk ratio, 2.9; 95% confidence interval, 0.7-11.6). Of 13 persons with confirmed mumps who unde

Additional evidence supports GRM6 p.Thr178Met as a cause of congenital stationary night blindness in three horse breeds.

Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is an ocular disorder characterized by nyctalopia. An autosomal recessive missense mutation in glutamate metabotropic receptor 6 (GRM6 c.533C>T, p.(Thr178Met)), called CSNB2, was previously identified in one Tennessee Walking Horse and predicted to reduce binding affinity of the neurotransmitter glutamate, impacting the retinal rod ON-bipolar cell signaling pathway. Thus, the first aim was to identify the allele frequency (AF) of CSNB2 in breeds with reported cases of CSNB and breeds closely related to the Tennessee Walking Horse. The second aim was

Cetuximab-induced anaphylaxis and IgE specific for galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose.

BACKGROUND: Cetuximab, a chimeric mouse-human IgG1 monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor, is approved for use in colorectal cancer and squamous-cell carcinoma of the head and neck. A high prevalence of hypersensitivity reactions to cetuximab has been reported in some areas of the United States. METHODS: We analyzed serum samples from four groups of subjects for IgE antibodies against cetuximab: pretreatment samples from 76 case subjects who had been treated with cetuximab at multiple centers, predominantly in Tennessee, Arkansas, and North Carolina; samples from 72

Hospital discharge database optimization in Guillain-Barré syndrome surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Precise causes and risk factors for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) remain incompletely understood, and monitoring its incidence remains important in public health. Active surveillance is not sustainable, but hospital discharge databases (HDDs) may be suitable for passive surveillance. METHODS: We optimized Tennessee's HDD of all ICD-9 codes of 357.0, from 2000 to 2010. Discharges for persons with a GBS diagnosis in a previous hospitalization in the database were excluded. HDD results were compared with the CDC's active surveillance program during the H1N1 vaccination program of 2

Assessing Prevalence of Nonmedically Used Prescription Drug Involvement in Overdose Deaths Through Linkage of State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System and Controlled Substances Monitoring Program Data.

BACKGROUND: While illicit substances are commonly involved in the overdose crisis, prescription substances still play a role. Oftentimes, decedents do not have prescriptions for these substances at the time of death. As such, we sought to examine the prevalence of nonmedical drug use in Tennessee through linkage of fatal drug overdose and prescription data. METHODS: We used State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) data to identify fatal drug overdoses in Tennessee from 2019 to 2022. Deaths were linked to Controlled Substances Monitoring Program data deterministically using

Legislative and regulatory barriers to pharmacies dispensing buprenorphine for OUD.

INTRODUCTION: Buprenorphine (BUP) is increasingly recognized and utilized as a valuable medication for the treatment of opioid use disorder. This article focuses on the problem of regulatory restrictions on access to buprenorphine products without naloxone (mono-product), involving patients in one geographic area, but which may represent a more general access problem in the United States. DESIGN: In response to an audit by the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy, a pharmacy in northeast Tennessee designed a questionnaire to survey patient motivation for traveling long distances to fill their prescrip

Incarceration, Inequality, and Hepatitis C Treatment: The Story of Two Southern States.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection causes liver-related morbidity/mortality and disproportionately affects people who are incarcerated and non-Hispanic Black populations, largely due to social and policy issues that contribute to poor health. With the advent of highly efficacious treatment, HCV is now curable. However, most states' departments of corrections do not offer universal HCV testing or treatment. Two southern states-Tennessee and Louisiana-provide examples of divergent approaches to addressing HCV infection. While Tennessee has offered treatment on a limited basis, resulting in a clas

SEROLOGIC RESPONSE TO CANINE DISTEMPER VACCINATION IN CAPTIVE LINNAEUS'S TWO-TOED SLOTHS ( CHOLOEPUS DIDACTYLUS) AFTER A FATAL CANINE DISTEMPER VIRUS OUTBREAK.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) affects many wild and captive, nondomestic species worldwide but has not been previously reported in Xenarthra. Paucity of information on vaccination safety and efficacy presents challenges for disease prevention in captive collections. CDV infections and subsequent mortalities in five captive Linnaeus's two-toed sloths ( Choloepus didactylus) in eastern Tennessee are reported. Clinical signs included oculonasal discharge, oral ulcerations, and diarrhea, and the diagnosis was confirmed by necropsy, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, virus isolation, and polymera

Estimating Dementia and Receipt of Informal Care Using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Data.

INTRODUCTION: Estimates of US adults with dementia differ widely and don't distinguish adults living in the community. METHODS: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 120 485 households in 21 states that used a cognitive decline module in 2011 were used. Data for both respondents and other adults with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) were included through proxy responses. Using responses to questions about the receipt of informal care for their SCD and diagnosed dementia, estimates were made for each state. RESULTS: Overall, 2.9% (range: 1.5% in Tennessee to 5.3% in Arkansas)

Relationship between velocity and temporal variables of the flat shod running walk.

The running walk of the Tennessee Walking Horse is often described as a faster variation of the walk, indicating the importance of velocity on the mechanics of the gait. Variations in gait variables create difficulties in clearly identifying the normal and abnormal running walk in a clinical evaluation. The objectives of this study were, therefore, to describe the flat shod running walk and to determine the relationship between velocity and the running walk. From frame-by-frame analysis of 60 Hz film, temporal variables were averaged for 6 strides from 6 horses performing an 'easy' (slow) and

Transovarial transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus by Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes.

Experiments were conducted to determine whether transovarial transmission (TOT) of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus occurs in Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes, the principal vectors of SLE virus in the central-eastern United States. In 1978, field-collected mosquitoes from Memphis, Tennessee, and McLeansboro, Illinois, were used; during 1979, colonized mosquitoes from Chicago, Illinois, and Memphis, Tennessee, were used. Mosquitoes were infected by feeding on viremic chicks inoculated with an SLE virus strain isolated from Cx. pipiens complex mosquitoes collected from Memphis, Tennessee, in

Toxoplasma gondii prevalence in carnivorous wild birds in the eastern United States.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important zoonotic protozoan parasite that can infect all warm-blooded animals including mammals and birds. Raptors can be intermediate hosts for T. gondii and the infection may be dependent on their feeding habits. In this study, we investigated the seroprevalence of T. gondii in ten raptor species from Florida, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee followed by a parasite bioassay on select seropositive samples. From a total of 155 raptors, we detected T. gondii antibodies using a modified agglutination test (cutoff 1:25) in 32 (20.6%) birds. The T. gondii seroprevalence was 44.

Lack of emergency hand surgery: discrepancy between elective and emergency hand care.

Wrist, hand, and finger trauma are the most common injuries presenting to emergency departments. Shortage of emergency hand care is an emerging problem, as on-call hand coverage declines. This study evaluates the availability of elective and emergency hand surgery services in Tennessee, with the use of telephone surveys administered to emergency department and operating facility management. One hundred eleven Tennessee hospitals completed the surveys (93% response rate). In all, 77% of hospitals offer elective hand surgery, 58% offer basic emergency hand services, 18% offer occasional hand spe
