Is opioid substitution treatment beneficial if injecting behaviour continues?

BACKGROUND: Opioid substitution treatment (OST) is recognised as an effective treatment for opioid dependence. Still, a subgroup of OST users continues to inject drugs. This study examines health risks and criminal activity in a population of needle exchange programme (NEP) participants by comparing those identified as current OST users to (i) those identified as former OST users and (ii) those with no OST experience. METHODS: This was a semi-annual cross-sectional study conducted from 2002 to 2011. NEP participants were interviewed in Oslo, Norway (n=1760); 341 were identified as current OST

Active transportation environments surrounding Canadian schools.

OBJECTIVES: Walking or cycling to school represents an opportunity for children to engage in physical activity. The study objectives were to: 1) describe active transportation policies, programs, and built environments of Canadian schools and their surrounding neighbourhoods, and 2) document variations based on urban-rural location and school type (primary vs. secondary vs. mixed primary/secondary schools). METHODS: 397 schools from across Canada were studied. A school administrator completed a questionnaire and responses were used to assess schools' policies and programs related to active tr

Applying a Network Approach To Characterize Gender Differences in Conduct Problems and Callous-Unemotional Traits among Children from Two Countries.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., low empathy, restricted guilt, limited prosociality) are associated with severe conduct problems (CP) across development. However, there is heterogeneity in how CP and CU traits manifest at different ages, between boys and girls, in different countries, and different measures. The current study investigated this heterogeneity by applying network analysis to two large mixed-gender samples from the United States (US) and Spain assessed at different ages, with parent ratings of CP, conduct disorder (CD) symptoms, and CU traits. Data were from the ABCD baseli

Multimodal Dementia Prediction With Large Language Models: Cross-Attention Over Text, Audio, and Image.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia, and there is growing interest in scalable approaches for early screening using speech-based tasks. While prior work has demonstrated promising results using either transcript-based language features or acoustic cues, most approaches remain unimodal or rely on simple fusion strategies that do not explicitly consider interactions across modalities. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we propose an attention-based trimodal fusion framework that integrates text, audio, and image representations of the Cookie Theft picture, which serves as t

Graph methods to infer spatial disturbances: Application to Huntington's Disease's speech.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington's Disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by the mutation of the Htt gene, impacting all aspects of living and functioning. Among cognitive disabilities, spatial capacities are impaired, but their monitoring remains scarce as limited by lengthy experts' assessments. Language offers an alternative medium to evaluate patients' performance in HD. Yet, its capacities to assess HD's spatial abilities are unknown. Here, we aimed to bring proof-of-concept that HD's spatial deficits can be assessed through speech. METHODS: We developed the Spatial Descripti

Distinguishable features of spontaneous speech in Alzheimer's clinical syndrome and healthy controls.

There is growing evidence that subtle changes in spontaneous speech may reflect early pathological changes in cognitive function. Recent work has found that lexical-semantic features of spontaneous speech predict cognitive dysfunction in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The current study assessed whether Ostrand and Gunstad's (OG) lexical-semantic features extend to predicting cognitive status in a sample of individuals with Alzheimer's clinical syndrome (ACS) and healthy controls. Four additional (New) speech indices shown to be important in language processing research were

The relationship of PrEP beliefs to perceived personal, interpersonal and structural benefits and barriers to PrEP use in women who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Women who inject drugs (WWID) have significant biological, behavioral, and gender-based barriers to accessing HIV prevention services, including Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication. Little is known about how beliefs about PrEP impact both perceived barriers and benefits of PrEP use and how they may be related to the decision-making process. METHODS: Surveys were conducted with 100 female clients of a large syringe services program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sample was categorized into three groups based on mean PrEP beliefs scores using terciles: accurate beliefs, m

Assessment of 19 years of a prospective national survey on drug-facilitated crimes in France.

Drug facilitated-crime or chemical submission (DFC/CS) is defined as the concealed or forced administration of psychoactive substances to a victim for criminal purposes. This is a national program set up in the early 2000 s in the form of a prospective multicenter survey, the results of which this manuscript presents. Over this 19-year period, 5487 cases were collected, analyzed and classified into 54 % of suspected cases, 29 % of chemical vulnerability (CV) cases and 17 % of proven DFC/CS cases. In the overall data, the most prevalent victims were female (81 %), with an average age of 27 year

Polyvictimization Among Sexual and Gender Minority Youth.

INTRODUCTION: Polyvictimization is a significant public health issue. Sexual and gender minority youth are important to include in polyvictimization research because they report higher rates of victimization than nonsexual and gender minority youth. This study examines whether polyvictimization attenuates the associations between individual types of victimization and depressed mood and substance use across gender and sexual identities. METHODS: Data were collected cross-sectionally from 3,838 youth aged 14-15 years. Youth were recruited through social media between October 2018 and August 201

Psilocybin use is associated with lowered odds of crime arrests in US adults: A replication and extension.

BACKGROUND: The United States boasts the largest prison population in the world, conferring significant direct and indirect costs (e.g. lost wages for the incarcerated, increased morbidity/mortality, etc.) to society. Recidivism rates are high for the imprisoned and most interventions to reduce criminality are minimally effective. Thus, in addition to the need for criminal justice reform, there is a need to better understand factors linked to lowered criminal behavior. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between the use of classic psychedelic substances (psilocybin, LSD

Sources of prescription opioids and tranquilizers for misuse among U.S. young adults: differences between high school dropouts and graduates and associations with adverse outcomes.

Background and Objectives: Prior research has identified that sources of prescription drugs for misuse vary based on educational attainment, which is important as certain sources are associated with adverse outcomes. The current research addressed limitations of the extant literature by creating distinct categories of push factors for high school dropout (e.g., negative school performance/experiences), pull factors for high school dropout (e.g., starting a family or getting a job), and high school graduates who did not attend college. Methods: Using data from the 2009-2014 National Survey on Dr

Deep ensemble learning with transformer models for enhanced Alzheimer's disease detection.

The progression of Alzheimer's disease is relentless, leading to a worsening of mental faculties over time. Currently, there is no remedy for this illness. Accurate detection and prompt intervention are pivotal in mitigating the progression of the disease. Recently, researchers have been developing new methods for detecting Alzheimer's at earlier stages, including genetic testing, blood tests for biomarkers, and cognitive assessments. Cognitive assessments involve a series of tests to measure memory, language, attention, and other brain functions. For disease detection, optimal performance nec

Murderers or thieves at risk? Offence-related suicide rates in adolescent and adult prison populations.

PURPOSE: Prisoners have a higher risk of suicide compared to non-incarcerated individuals. One aim of suicide prevention for prisoners is to identify risk factors in order to put stronger support mechanisms in place for the more vulnerable detainees. This study investigates the suicide risk (SR) in offence-related sub-populations in a representative German sample and differentiates between SR for adolescent and adult prisoners. METHODS: Conducting a national study with data from public German records on the entire prison population from 2000 to 2016 and suicide numbers in German prisons in th

Victimization Status of Female and Male College Students in Spain: Prevalence and Relation to Mental Distress.

Despite the growing body of research concerning victimization and mental health among college populations around the world, there remains a need for additional studies that emphasize the role that victimization has on mental health. This study builds on previous research by analyzing the relationship between mental distress and victimization status in Spanish college students (n = 828, 490 women and 338 men). Using online surveys, we examined the prevalence rates of seven types of victimization (threats, insults, online slander, theft, physical abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse) and t

Factors associated with victimization in dual diagnosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a substance use disorder and co-occurring mental disorder are prone to victimization. There is a lack of research identifying variables related to violent and property victimization in this high risk group. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with violent and property victimization in male and female dual diagnosis patients in order to identify targets for prevention. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, victimization and demographic, clinical and psychological characteristics were assessed in 243 treatment-seeking patients with dual diagnosis. P

Drug Closure of a Patent Ductus Arteriosus in An Extremely Low Birth Weight Premature Newborn. A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Patent ductus arteriosus involves maintaining the permeability of the vascular ductus located between the pulmonary artery and the descending aorta, due to the failure of transition from foetal to adult type circulation. This malformation is characteristic to premature newborns with extremely low birth weight. The main pathophysiological factors identified in this pathology are immaturity of the smooth muscles, presence of vasodilator mediators and persistent hypoxaemia. Ductal-dependent cardiac malformations require drug therapy for keeping the permeability of the ductus arterio
