Microarrays are widely used to study changes in gene expression in diseases. In this paper, we use this technology to discover gene expression patterns in the cold syndrome in Chinese medicine. We identify differentially expressed genes and extracted gene modules that are enriched with differentially expressed genes in the cold syndrome by analyzing cDNA samples, which are purified from blood taken from a pedigree. Our results suggest that the cold syndrome might be caused by the physiological imbalance and/or the disorder of metabolite processes. The study confirms the hypotheses about molecu

In two studies, the cold shock and diving responses were investigated after human face immersion without prior hyperventilation to explore the mechanism(s) accounting for reductions in maximal apnoeic times (ATmax) at low water temperatures. In study 1, ATmax, heart rate (HR) and cutaneous blood cell velocity were measured in 13 non-apnoea-trained males during apnoeic face immersion in 0, 10, 20 and 33 degrees C water and room air (AIR). In study 2, six males were measured during non-apnoeic face immersion in 0, 10 and 33 degrees C water for ventilation (VE), respiratory exchange ratio (RER),

The posterior insula, central sulcus, and inferior parietal lobule including the intraparietal sulcus have been considered the vestibular cortex based on functional brain mapping in humans as well as experiments in lower primates. The same regions receive optokinetic, visual, and proprioceptive projections. We examined the cortical and subcortical projection of vestibular activity with visual and proprioceptive input eliminated during caloric stimulation (CS), using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Single-shot gradient-echo echoplanar image (EPI) volumes were sensitive to BOLD con

The recovery of the mechanosensitive afferent fibres in the lingual branch of the trigeminal nerve has been studied using electrophysiological techniques in cats, after two methods of nerve repair. After nerve section the lingual nerve was repaired by either epineurial sutures or by entubulation. 12 weeks after either method of repair the properties of the regenerated fibres were significantly different from normal, but following repair with epineurial suture they were closer to normal than after repair by entubulation. After entubulation the fibres had a greater reduction in conduction veloci

The effect of acupuncture on sensory thresholds was studied in 6 healthy subjects. The modes of acupuncture studied were: 1. manual stimulation, 2. electrical stimulation at 2 Hz, 3. electrical stimulation at 80 Hz. Superfiscial-acupuncture was used as placebo. Insertions of needles or application of electrodes were bilateral, at St 7 (intrasegmental) or Li 4 (extrasegmental). The study showed that manual or electro-acupuncture were effective when used intrasegmentally, raising pain threshold values 1.1 to 1.4 times that prior to stimulation. The pain threshold elevation obtained was not signi

Cerebral-evoked potentials were used to study a 25-year-old man, the older of two siblings with congenital insensitivity to all noxious stimuli, gross impairment of temperature perception, and anhidrosis. Electrical stimulation of tooth pulp consistently eliciting pain and cerebral responses in normal subjects evoked neither cerebral potentials nor painful or other sensations in our patient. However, ordinarily painful electric shocks to the skin of his face evoked cerebral responses as well as sensations lacking disagreeable qualities. Those cerebral potentials elicited by electrical stimulat

Consuming cold fluids during heat stress can alter sweating responses; however, it remains unclear why chemical activation of cold-sensitive transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) with menthol only induces a cold sensation. Animal models propose that complete cold transduction with TRPM8 chemical stimulation must be combined with physical cooling to impact thermoeffector responses. To address this, 12 participants (5 females and 7 males; 22 ± 5 yr; 79.5 ± 15.0 kg; 1.8 ± 0.1 m) conducted four passive heating protocols in random order where, within trial, they consumed 3.2 mL/kg body

Mosquito-borne diseases affect hundreds of millions of people annually and disproportionately impact the developing world1,2. One mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, is a primary vector of viruses that cause dengue, yellow fever and Zika. The attraction of Ae. aegypti female mosquitos to humans requires integrating multiple cues, including CO2 from breath, organic odours from skin and visual cues, all sensed at mid and long ranges, and other cues sensed at very close range3-6. Here we identify a cue that Ae. aegypti use as part of their sensory arsenal to find humans. We demonstrate that Ae. aegy

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency (RF) heating during MRI theoretically increases with magnetic field strength. In addition, implanted metallic devices are reported to further increase RF heating. However, a detailed evaluation of this type of heating remains scarce in clinical practice.
PURPOSE: To assess possible risks and discomfort related to RF heating during MRI examinations of patients with and without metallic implantable devices.
STUDY TYPE: A retrospective study of previous questionnaire results on the heating sensation during MRI examinations of the lumbar spine.
SUBJECTS: In all, 715 p

During colonisation of the upper respiratory tract, bacteria are exposed to gradients of temperatures. Neisseria meningitidis is often present in the nasopharynx of healthy individuals, yet can occasionally cause severe disseminated disease. The meningococcus can evade the human complement system using a range of strategies that include recruitment of the negative complement regulator, factor H (CFH) via factor H binding protein (fHbp). We have shown previously that fHbp levels are influenced by the ambient temperature, with more fHbp produced at higher temperatures (i.e. at 37°C compared with

In Fabry disease, deficiency of α-galactosidase A results in the accumulation of glycosphingolipids in body fluids and tissues including corneas, blood vessels, kidneys and also structures of the central and peripheral nervous system. Many patients show cardiovascular and cerebrovascular dysfunction. Cerebrovascular dysfunction is particularly associated with a high risk of strokes and of mortality even at a young age. The prevalence and severity of cerebrovascular complications increase with patients'age. Clinical data as well as histologic and neurophysiologic studies showed predominantly sm

INTRODUCTION: Women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD), a common cause of dyspareunia, are typically considered a homogeneous group. However, research suggests that differences on some factors (e.g., medical history, pain characteristics, psychological functioning, treatment response) exist based upon whether the pain was present at first intercourse (primary PVD: PVD1) or developed at some later point (secondary PVD: PVD2).
AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in demographic variables, pain characteristics, psychosocial and psychosexual adjustment, and pain sensitivity

Chilliness in women is a symptom of menopause, but there is increasing evidence that young women also suffer from chilliness, which can lead to mental problems such as insomnia and mood disorders. We elucidated methodological issues related to recognizing young women suffering from chilliness. Ninety-seven female university students were divided into two groups by their self-awareness of chilliness. Using a new questionnaire, we evaluated the severity of their physical, mental and chilliness-related complaints. We also measured several physical parameters (BMI, body fat ratio, basal metabolism

This study investigated the utility of neurophysiologic examination and thermal quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy and neuropathic pain. Fifty-eight patients (14 men), 34 with sensory deficit within the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and 24 within the lingual nerve (LN) distribution, were included. Twenty-six patients (45%) reported neuropathic pain. Patients underwent blink reflex (BR) test and thermal QST; sensory neurography was done to the IAN patients. Results of clinical sensory testing were available from the charts of 48 patients revealing abnor
