[Changes in T helper lymphocytes and their subsets in children with tic disorders].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the changes in T helper lymphocytes and their subsets in children with tic disorders (TD) and their clinical significance. METHODS: Flow cytometry was used to measure the percentages of T helper lymphocytes and their subsets in the peripheral blood of children with TD and healthy children (controls). RESULTS: The percentage of T helper lymphocytes was significantly lower in the TD group than in the control group (P<0.001). The abnormal rate of T helper lymphocytes in the TD group was significantly higher than that in the control group (68.7% vs 18.8%; P<0.001). The perc

Prenatal Maternal Smoking and Increased Risk for Tourette Syndrome and Chronic Tic Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the role of prenatal maternal smoking in risk for Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorder (TS/CT) and pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHOD: In an analysis of 73,073 singleton pregnancies from the Danish National Birth Cohort, we calculated incidence rates (IR) per 1,000 person-year for TS/CT and OCD. We then determined crude and adjusted hazard ratios and 95% CIs associated with prenatal maternal smoking, considering smoking as a dichotomous (yes/no) variable or a stratified variable (no smoking, light smoking, and heavy smoking [≥10 cigarettes

[Care continuity for patients with tic disorders during transition from childhood to adulthood].

Chronic tic disorders including Tourette syndrome are defined as disorders with tics continuing for over a year. Although a substantial portion of patients with chronic tic disorders have improvement or remission of their tics until adulthood, some of them still have necessity to receive treatment for tic disorders in adulthood. Regardless of age and severity of tics, basic treatment for tic disorders consists of psycho-education and family guidance which encourage patients and people around them to understand, accept and cope with tics appropriately. In most of the adult cases with tic disord

Somatosensory Gating of Pneumatic Stimuli in Adults with Chronic Tic Disorder.

Individuals with chronic tic disorder (CTD) frequently report sensory over-responsivity, defined as heightened awareness of and/or behavioral reactivity to stimuli that are non-aversive to most neurotypical individuals. Within CTD populations, sensory over-responsivity is associated with severity of tics and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms. Despite its prevalence and association with core facets of the phenotype, the neurobiological basis of sensory over-responsivity in CTD remains unclear. Sensory gating, the physiological process of filtering out repetitive stimuli in early perceptual stag

Meta-anlaysis of Internet-based Behavior Therapy for Tic Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by involuntary motor and vocal tics, often beginning in childhood and causing significant distress. While medication and behavioral therapies are established treatments, chronic use of medication can cause side effects, and behavioral therapy faces limited provider availability and geographic barriers. Internet-based behavioral interventions are emerging as alternatives to improve treatment accessibility. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials examining

We've all been wrong about provisional tic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Provisional Tic Disorder (PTD) is common in childhood. The received wisdom among clinicians is that PTD is short-lived and mild, with at most a few tics, and rarely includes complex tics, premonitory phenomena or comorbid illnesses. However, such conclusions come from clinical experience, with biased ascertainment and limited follow-up. METHODS: Prospective study of 89 children with tics starting 0-9 months ago (median 4 months), fewer than half from clinical sources. Follow-up at 12 (± 24, 36, 48) months after the first tic. RESULTS: At study entry, many children had ADHD (39),

Psychosocial stress in children with Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to understand the longitudinal relationship between psychosocial stress with tic exacerbation in children with Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorder. METHODS: Consecutive ratings of tic severity as well as child and parental reports of psychosocial stress were obtained for 373 children (296 males, 77 females; mean age 9y 5mo; SD 3y 3mo) with TS and chronic tic disorder between January 2018 and December 2020. The Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) global severity score, total tic score, and impairment rating were calculated. The stressful events and Y

New-onset tic disorder following circumscribed brain injury.

Adult-onset tics represent either a secondary tic disorder ("tourettism") or a late presentation of childhood tics, which may have been previously unrecognised. Head trauma has been recognised as an infrequent cause of adult-onset tic disorder, which exhibits variable temporal relationship to the inciting injury and response to therapy. We present a patient who presented with late-onset tics seven years after a circumscribed brain injury, responding well to antidopaminergic treatment. A review of all the previously reported cases of post-traumatic tic disorder is provided. Our patient is unusu

Association between allergic conjunctivitis and provisional tic disorder in children.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are associated with a higher risk of Tourette's syndrome (TS). Provisional tic disorder (PTD) and eye blinking are often reported as the initial symptoms both in TS and in allergic conjunctivitis (AC). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between AC and PTD in children of 4-10 years of age in southwest China. METHODS: This case-control study was carried out at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between January 2016 and June 2017. Age- and gender-matched children without PTD were included as the control group. Intraocular pressure was me

[A review on the management of tic disorders in children: psychoeducation and behavioral intervention].

Tic disorders (TD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that are characterized by motor and/or vocal tics in children and adolescents. The etiology and pathogenesis of TD remain unclear, and it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors. The major treatment for TD includes psychoeducation, behavioral intervention, and drug treatment. To further explore the management of TD, this article reviews the research advances in psychoeducation and behavioral intervention for patients with TD.

Very Early-onset Schizophrenia with Secondary Onset Tic Disorder.

Very early-onset schizophrenia (defined as an onset of psychosis before 13 years of age) is a rare and severe form of the disorder which is clinically and neurobiologically continuous with the adult-onset disorder. It is rarely reported <12 years of age in Indian literature. Here, we present a 15-year-old boy who developed psychosis at 9 years of age and during illness developed tic disorder.

Post-operative Adult Onset Tic Disorder: A Rare Presentation.

Tics are rapid and repetitive muscle contractions resulting in stereotype movements and vocalizations that are experienced as involuntary. Onset before 18-year is a diagnostic criterion for tic disorders. Children and adolescents may exhibit tic behaviors after a stimulus or in response to an internal urge. Tic behaviors increase during physical or an emotional stress. Adult onset tic disorders are reported by infections, drugs, cocaine, toxins, chromosomal disorders, head injury, stroke, neurocutaneous syndromes, neurodegenerative disorders and peripheral injuries. Only few cases have yet bee

Systemic review of aripiprazole for the treatment of children and adolescents with tic disorders.

This study aimed to systematically review the data related to the treatment of tic disorders through aripiprazole administration, an atypical antipsychotic. The databases of MEDLINE/PubMed and Google Scholar were searched using the key words: "aripiprazole," "tic," and "Tourette," and the relevant titles retrieved. Thirty-five articles met the inclusion criteria and were further scrutinized. Most of the articles were case reports, and only 2 published trials included control groups. The number of randomized double-blind controlled clinical trials was zero, therefore, no strong evidence, provid

Quality of life in youth with Tourette's syndrome and chronic tic disorder.

This study sought to examine quality of life (QoL) in clinic-referred children and adolescents (n = 59, M age = 11.4+/-2.6 years) with a chronic tic disorder. The QoL scores for tic patients were lower than for healthy controls but higher than for the psychiatric sample on the majority of domains. Children's self-reported QoL scores and a measure of tic severity were moderately and inversely correlated. Parent reports of their child's QoL were weakly related to tic severity. Correlations between parent and child ratings of QoL for children ages 8 to 11 years were generally higher than those fo

Chronic tics and Tourette syndrome in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic motor/vocal tics (CMVT) are both common disorders in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there have been few studies evaluating the differences between the OCD with TS and OCD with CMVT subgroups. This study was conducted in order to further investigate possible differences between the expression of the OCD phenotype in OCD with TS and that seen in OCD with CMVT. One hundred and fifty-nine outpatients referred to an OCD research program were evaluated using the following instruments: the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV; the Ya
