Distribution of pufferfish saxitoxin- and tetrodotoxin-binding protein homolog and tetrodotoxin in the brain and pituitary of juvenile tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes.

Pufferfish saxitoxin- and tetrodotoxin (TTX)-binding protein (PSTBP) is considered to transfer TTX between tissues. The immunohistochemical distribution of PSTBP-homolog (PSTBPh) and TTX in the brain and pituitary of hatchery-reared juvenile tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes was investigated. PSTBPh was observed mainly in the pars intermedia of the pituitary. TTX was only detected in a TTX-fed fish in the neurohypophysis of the pituitary and in several other brain regions. The relationship between PSTBPh and TTX is discussed.

TIger II vs JUdkins Catheters for Transradial Coronary Angiography (TIJUCA Study): A Randomized Controlled Trial of Radiation Exposure.

BACKGROUND: In high-expertise transradial (TR) centers, the radiation exposure to patients during coronary angiography (CAG) is equivalent to transfemoral use. However, there is no definitive information during TR-CAG regarding the use of a single, dedicated catheter to impart less radiation exposure to patients. OBJECTIVE: We compare the radiation exposure to patients during right TR-CAG with Tiger II catheter (Terumo Interventional Systems) vs Judkins right (JR) 4.0/Judkins left (JL) 3.5 catheters (Cordis Corporation). METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, and prospective trial included 1

IgG Antibody Responses to the Aedes albopictus 34k2 Salivary Protein as Novel Candidate Marker of Human Exposure to the Tiger Mosquito.

Mosquitoes of the Aedes genus transmit arboviruses of great importance to human health as dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever. The tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus can play an important role as arboviral vector, especially when Aedes aegypti is absent or present at low levels. Remarkably, the rapid worldwide spreading of the tiger mosquito is expanding the risk of arboviral transmission also to temperate areas, and the autochthonous cases of chikungunya, dengue and Zika in Europe emphasize the need for improved monitoring and control. Proteomic and transcriptomic studies on blood feeding

Present and future projections of habitat suitability of the Asian tiger mosquito, a vector of viral pathogens, from global climate simulation.

Climate change can influence the transmission of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) through altering the habitat suitability of insect vectors. Here we present global climate model simulations and evaluate the associated uncertainties in view of the main meteorological factors that may affect the distribution of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which can transmit pathogens that cause chikungunya, dengue fever, yellow fever and various encephalitides. Using a general circulation model at 50 km horizontal resolution to simulate mosquito survival variables including temperature, precipitati

Determination of the persistence of dimetridazole, metronidazole and ronidazole residues in black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) tissue and their stability during cooking.

The depletion of three banned nitroimidazole drugs - dimetridazole (DMZ), metronidazole (MNZ) and ronidazole (RNZ) - was investigated in black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) following in-water medication. The highest concentrations of residues were measured immediately after the 24-h immersion (d0). At this time, MNZ and MNZ-OH residues were measured in shrimp tissue samples at concentrations ranging from 361 to 4189 and from 0.28 to 6.6 μg kg(-1), respectively. DMZ and its metabolites HMMNI ranged in concentration between 31,509 and 37,780 and between 15.0 and 31.9 μg kg(-1), respectively. RN

Identification of a transparent mutant tiger barb Puntius tetrazona and its use for in vivo observation of a Pleistophora sp. (Microsporidia) infection.

A transparent mutant tiger barb Puntius tetrazona was identified and characterized by its transparent body, which allows clear visualization of internal organs. Hybridization of this mutant with the albino variant produces a transparent and albinoid double phenotype, and the transparency of this mutant is controlled by a recessive allele. Light microscopic and ultrastructural examinations show that in contrast to normal individuals, transparent mutants lack iridophores, and light penetrates unimpeded through the body. Pleistophora sp. infection was observed in vivo, allowing live observation o

Exposure Routes Shape Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances' Toxicokinetics and Sex-Specific Bioaccumulation in Thai Tiger Frogs (Hoplobatrachus rugulosus).

This study investigated the sex-specific toxicokinetics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Thai tiger frogs via dermal and dietary exposure. The lower depuration rate constant (kd) of PFASs in the dermal group than in the dietary group results in a higher assimilation efficiency (11% vs 3.7% for males and 21% vs 4.4% for females) in the former. Female frogs exhibited higher kd than male frogs (0.19 vs 0.057 per day for perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA) and 0.20 vs 0.062 per day for perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA), especially for long-chain PFCA and PFSA, but these differences were a

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes) interferon regulatory factor in response to Vibrio harveyi infection.

The interferon regulatory factor (IRF) family serves as pivotal transcriptional regulators that mediate the initiation of host innate immune responses to pathogen invasion by modulating the transcriptional expression of interferon genes, which in turn induces the expression of downstream immune-related genes. However, studies on the IRF gene family in tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes) remain limited, particularly concerning its functional role in mediating anti-Vibrio immune responses. In this study, a total of 12 TrIRF genes were identified in the genome of tiger puffer, distributed across 11

The Tiger Milk Medicinal Mushroom Lignosus rhinocerus (Agaricomycetes) Mitigates Oxidative Damage in a Cellular Model Mimicking Friedreich's Ataxia.

Lignosus rhinocerus is a medicinal mushroom that is well recognized for its diverse pharmacological properties. We evaluated the protective effects of L. rhinocerus ethanol fraction (LREF) in Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) by using fibroblasts treated with L-buthionine sulfoximine (L-BSO) to induce oxidative damage to mimic the pathogenesis of the disease. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) of LREF revealed a total of eight compounds. The compound-target gene-disease network analysis also identified that phthalic acid, citric acid, oleic acid, methyl palmitate and tryptophan, were ass

A potential approach for targeting change of metabolic characteristics of the tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) via different probiotics fermentation.

This study applied six types of probiotics for investing their impact on metabolic characteristics of fermented tiger nut meal. There were 57 commonly shared metabolites to be identified. Metabolic pathway analysis showed that metabolites of different probiotic fermentation were mainly involved in amino acid metabolism, purine metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, terpene, piperidine and pyridine alkaloids biosynthesis. Compared with control, Pediococcus pentasaceus, Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation increased formation of alcohols and lipid-related compounds. Furtherm

Insecticide resistance in the field populations of the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus in Beijing: resistance status and associated detoxification genes.

BACKGROUND: Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) is an invasive and widespread mosquito species that can transmit dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. Its control heavily relies on the use of insecticides. However, the efficacy of the insecticide-based intervention is threatened by the increasing development of resistance to available insecticides. Understanding the current status and potential mechanisms of insecticide resistance is an important prerequisite for devising strategies to maintain the sustainability of vector control programs. In this study, we investigated the cu

Molecular identification of Colpodella sp. of South China tiger Panthera tigris amoyensis (Hilzheimer) in the Meihua Mountains, Fujian, China.

A three-year-old male South China tiger died in the tiger enclosure of the China Tiger Park in the Meihua Mountains on December 2018 after being bitten by a tick. This tiger presented clinical symptoms like whole-body severe jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, kidney, and lymph node hemorrhages. The Colpodella sp.-specific 18S rRNA gene was detected using nested PCR. Interestingly, the DNA isolated from the blood of the tiger was found to be 100% similar to that of the tick by NCBI BLAST analysis. However, the DNA fragments isolated from the tiger's blood were 90.1% similar to the Colpodella sp. str

Ocean warming alters the distributional range, migratory timing, and spatial protections of an apex predator, the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier).

Given climate change threats to ecosystems, it is critical to understand the responses of species to warming. This is especially important in the case of apex predators since they exhibit relatively high extinction risk, and changes to their distribution could impact predator-prey interactions that can initiate trophic cascades. Here we used a combined analysis of animal tracking, remotely sensed environmental data, habitat modeling, and capture data to evaluate the effects of climate variability and change on the distributional range and migratory phenology of an ectothermic apex predator, th

Potential geographic distribution of the tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) (Diptera: Culicidae) in current and future conditions for Colombia.

In Colombia, little is known on the distribution of the Asian mosquito Aedes albopictus, main vector of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika in Asia and Oceania. Therefore, this work sought to estimate its current and future potential geographic distribution under the Representative Concentration Paths (RCP) 2.6 and 8.5 emission scenarios by 2050 and 2070, using ecological niche models. For this, predictions were made in MaxEnt, employing occurrences of A. albopictus from their native area and South America and bioclimatic variables of these places. We found that, from their invasion of Colombia to t

Fatal tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier attack in New Caledonia erroneously ascribed to great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias.

To understand the causes and patterns of shark attacks on humans, accurate identification of the shark species involved is necessary. Often, the only reliable evidence for this comes from the characteristics of the wounds exhibited by the victim. The present case report is intended as a reappraisal of the Luengoni, 2007 case (International Shark Attack File no. 4299) where a single shark bite provoked the death of a swimmer by haemorrhagic shock. Our examination of the wounds on the body of the victim, here documented by so-far unpublished photographic evidence, determined that the shark posse

Entry of tiger frog virus (an Iridovirus) into HepG2 cells via a pH-dependent, atypical, caveola-mediated endocytosis pathway.

Tiger frog virus (TFV), in the genus Ranavirus of the family Iridoviridae, causes high mortality of cultured tiger frog tadpoles in China. To explore the cellular entry mechanism of TFV, HepG2 cells were treated with drugs that inhibit the main endocytic pathways. We observed that TFV entry was inhibited by NH(4)Cl, chloroquine, and bafilomycin, which can all elevate the pH of acidic organelles. In contrast, TFV entry was not influenced by chlorpromazine or overexpression of a dominant-negative form of Esp15, which inhibit the assembly of clathrin-coated pits. These results suggested that TFV
