Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride and chlorhexidine mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage dental implants: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The growing popularity of non-submerged dental implants in recent years requires a greater emphasis on microbial plaque control. Chlorhexidine (CHX), the most commonly used mouthwash in implant surgery, is sometimes associated with tooth staining and alteration in taste perception. Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride (AmF/SnF2) mouthwash has been shown to have anti-infective properties; however, it has not been tested as an adjunct anti-infective means in non-submerged dental implants. The purpose of this trial was to compare AmF/SnF2 and CHX mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage de

A clinical comparison of non-traumatic methods of treating dental caries.

Over a period of 18 months the following non-traumatic methods of treating dental caries in deciduous teeth were compared: application of stannous fluoride (SnF2); application of SnF2 and silver diamine fluoride (SDF); application of SnF2, SDF, minimal cavity preparation and use of composite resin; minimal cavity preparation and composite resin only; no treatment. Caries progressed in only 5 per cent of the SDF/SnF2 group and 11 per cent of the composite resin group. The results indicate that it may be possible to treat carious lesions in a non-traumatic way using minimally prepared cavities a

Stannous fluoride dentifrice with sodium hexametaphosphate: review of laboratory, clinical and practice-based data.

Dentifrice was originally used to promote oral hygiene by cleaning teeth. However, with advances in product formulation, it has become a valuable vehicle for the delivery of agents offering health and cosmetic benefits. Stannous fluoride, introduced in 1955 in dentifrice, is one of the longest established of such agents. The well-known anti-caries efficacy of stannous fluoride is based on its impact on the tooth surfaces and on its antibacterial activity. More recently, the demand for tooth whitening products has increased, and sodium hexametaphosphate has been shown to be helpful in whitening

A meta-analysis of six-month studies of antiplaque and antigingivitis agents.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The author conducted a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the efficacy of antigingivitis and antiplaque products in six-month trials. He searched electronic databases for six-month randomized clinical studies that evaluated both antiplaque and antigingivitis properties of dentifrices or mouthrinses. In addition, the author solicited unpublished studies from manufacturers. RESULTS: Seventeen studies support the antiplaque, antigingivitis effects of dentifrices containing 0.30 percent triclosan, 2.0 percent Gantrez copolymer. There was no evidence of efficac

Fluorination of perovskite-related phases of composition SrFe(1-x)Sn(x)O(3-δ).

Perovskite-related compounds of composition SrFe(1-x)Sn(x)O(3-δ) (x = 0.31, 0.54) have been prepared. X-ray powder diffraction shows that the materials adopt orthorhombic unit cells. The lattice parameters increase with the incorporation of increasing amounts of tin, which is shown by x-ray absorption near edge structure investigation to be present as Sn(4+). (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy indicates that iron in these phases is present as Fe(5+) and Fe(3+) and that the materials adopt the compositions SrFe(0.69)Sn(0.31)O(2.94) and SrFe(0.46)Sn(0.54)O(2.88). We propose that the disproportionatio

Lipopolysaccharide and lipoteichoic acid binding by antimicrobials used in oral care formulations.

PURPOSE: To study the reactivity of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) with the cationically charged agents cetylpyridinium chloride, stannous fluoride, and the non-cationic agent triclosan. We also assessed the effect of these agents to inhibit LPS and LTA binding to cellular Toll-like Receptors (TLRs) in vitro. METHODS: The ability of these antimicrobials to bind with LPS and/or LTA was assessed in both the Limulus amebocyte lysate and BODIPY-TR-cadaverine dye assays. Mass spectroscopy was then used to confirm that stannous fluoride directly binds with LPS and to determine

Evaluation of the specificity and effectiveness of selected oral hygiene actives in salivary biofilm microcosms.

The microbiological effects of biocidal products used for the enhancement of oral hygiene relate to the active compound(s) as well as other formulation components. Here, we test the specificities of selected actives in the absence of multiple excipients. Salivary ecosystems were maintained in tissue culture plate-based hydroxyapatite disc models (HDMs) and modified drip-flow biofilm reactors (MDFRs). Test compounds stannous fluoride (SF), SDS, triclosan (TCS), zinc lactate (ZL) and ZL with SF in combination (ZLSF) were delivered to the HDMs once and four times daily for 6 days to MDFRs. Plaque
