This study examined the frequency of dermatophytoses in the Primorsko-Goranska County, a north-western part of Croatia, over a period of 21 years (1988-2008). All fungal samples were microscopically examined with 20% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Fungal infections were confirmed in 26.9% cases. Out of these, dermatophytes were isolated in 38.3%, Candida spp. infection in 55.1% cases, while non-dermatophyte molds were identified in 6.6% isolates. The most frequently isolated dermatophyte was Trichophyton (T.) mentagrophytes var. interdigitalis (55.4%), followed by Mycrosporum (M.) canis (

Trichophyton tonsurans infection has been prevalent among individuals involved in contact sports in Japan since about 2000. The present review focuses on its diagnosis, molecular epidemiology, drug susceptibility, and infection control. The most commonly observed lesions of T. tonsurans, an anthropogenic dermatophyte, are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. However, the presence of asymptomatic carriers must be considered for infection control. Genotypic epidemiology using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) in the non-transcribed spacer (NTS) region of the ribosomal RNA gene showed

Physicians have been aware of superficial fungal infections for centuries, but the causal agents and treatments of fungal infections remained unknown until the mid-1800s, when numerous important findings were reported. Among the relevant researchers in the field of superficial mycoses were Remak, who found the fungal nature of favus in 1837; Berg, who reported oral candidosis in 1841; and Wilkinson, who described vaginal candidosis in 1849. Tinea versicolor was described clinically in 1846 by Eichstedt, and its etiologic agent was identified in 1853. Beigel reported white piedra in 1856, and C

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is regarded as a disorder of histiocytic cell proliferation of the Langerhans type, probably resulting from altered immunoregulation. Cutaneous involvement is frequent and often appears as a scaling papular eruption that resembles seborrheic dermatitis; when limited to the scalp, scaling and erythema may also be confused with tinea capitis. We describe four patients who had LCH and documented dermatophyte infection versus colonization of the scalp. Fungal cultures should be considered in patients who have LCH with scalp involvement who do not respond to stan

Kerion is a subtype of tinea capitis with a severe inflammatory response, requiring early diagnosis to prevent secondary bacterial infection, folliculitis and permanent alopecia. Oral antifungal drugs are considered the first-line treatment for tinea capitis; however, drugs therapy is challenged by the long treatment duration, side effects, and drug resistance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been widely used to treat dermatomycosis and has shown significant efficacy in recent years. We report the case of a girl who presented with refractory severe kerion following unregulated treatment and ins

One hundred and fourteen dermatophytes were isolated during the period from January 1995 to May 1997 in our outpatient's center of Dermatology, at the Universitary Hospital of Granada. Trichophyton rubrum (35.96%) was the commonest species, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes (21.19%) and Microsporum canis (21.19%). On the clinical ground, tinea unguium (24.56%) was predominant, with tinea corporis (23.68%) and also tinea capitis (2192 %). Our results are compared with recent data from other Spanish regions, specially Andalousia.

An epidemiological survey of dermatomycoses and their causative fungus flora in Japan for 2011 was conducted in accordance with methods and criteria of the past four surveys. The survey covered a total number of 36,052 outpatients who visited 12 dermatological clinics throughout Japan. The results were as follows. 1)Dermatophytosis was the most prevalent cutaneous fungal infection (2,980 cases) seen in these clinics, followed by candidiasis (378 cases) and then Malassezia infections (152 cases). 2)Among dermatophytoses, tinea pedis was the most frequent (1,930 cases : male, 980 ; female, 950),

Dermatological problems manifesting as primary and secondary cutaneous complaints, constitute at least 30% of all outpatient visits to a pediatrician and 30% of all visits to dermatologists involve patients of pediatric age group. There is, however, a paucity of data about pediatric dermatoses in India, which has been reviewed to the extent possible. A brief account of common dermatological problems in India mainly infestations (pediculosis capitis, scabies) and infections (pyoderma, molluscum contagiosum, warts, herpes simplex infection, varicella, herpes zoster, tinea capitis and corporis, t

All 22 cases of infections with Microsporum canis verified by culture during a five-year period were surveyed. Only tinea corporis was found. The clinical picture was varied and in more than half of the cases the preliminary diagnosis was other than tinea. The classical tinea capitis was not found in any case. Direct KOH-mounts showed poor correlation to the cultural findings (positive in 33%). It is concluded that mycological screening of certain dermatological disorders should be performed by culturing.

In this review, we summarize the status of Trichophyton tonsurans infection in Japan in terms of epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and infection control. Since approximately 2000, outbreaks of T. tonsurans infections among combat sports club members have been reported frequently, with the infection then spreading to their friends and family members. The most common clinical features of T. tonsurans infection are tinea corporis, which is difficult to differentiate from eczema, and tinea capitis. Tinea capitis is classified as the seborrheic form, kerion celsi form or "black dot" form,

During a four year period, a total of 84 cases of dermatophytosis were seen in patients from 0 to 17 years of age attending our out-patient department. The sex distribution was about equal in preadolescents. Males predominated among adolescents. A peak incidence at early school age was due to cases of tinea capitis, mainly caused by Microsporum canis. A peak among adolescents was due to cases of tinea pedis, mainly caused by Trichophyton rubrum. In general, patients with Trichophyton rubrum infections were older than those with other types of dermatophytosis (p less than 0.05). Dermatophytosis

BACKGROUND: Dermatophyte infections, which are among the most prevalent fungal infections globally, affect skin, hair and nails, accounting for significant morbidity. Epidemiological data on dermatophytosis in the UK are limited. One notable study in 2007 provided insights into the causative agents of dermatophyte infections in the UK; however, no extensive regional analysis has been published since.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide a contemporary understanding of the epidemiology and causative agents of dermatophytosis in South-East England.
METHOD: This retrospective labora

In Germany, infections due to the zoophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton (T.) species of Arthroderma benhamiae are being more frequently diagnosed. The source of infection of this emerging pathogen overlaps with that of the zoophilic species T. interdigitale. The most common source are guinea pigs. T. species of Arthroderma benhamiae causes inflammatory dermatophytosis in children and adolescents. In addition to tinea capitis, it may cause both tinea corporis, tinea manus and frequently tinea faciei. In Germany, T. species of Arthroderma benhamiae is a frequent zoophilic dermatophyte, which in re

Tinea pedis, onychomycosis, tinea cruris, and tinea capitis are among the most common dermatophyte infections and are seen in all socioeconomic groups. Successful treatment of these conditions depends first on accurate diagnosis, which is often quickly accomplished with a KOH examination. Culture may be needed in some cases, but results may not be available for 2 weeks or more. Immunocompromised patients are particularly susceptible to dermatophyte infection, and any deviations in presentation or failure to respond to treatment should prompt investigation for an underlying problem.

Most fungal infections of the skin are caused by dermatophytes, both in Germany and globally. Tinea pedis is the most frequent fungal infection in Western industrial countries. Tinea pedis frequently leads to tinea unguium, while in the elderly, both may then spread causing tinea corporis. A variety of body sites may be affected, including tinea glutealis, tinea faciei and tinea capitis. The latter rarely occurs in adults, but is the most frequent fungal infection in childhood. Following antifungal treatment of tinea unguium and also tinea capitis a dermatophytid or hyperergic reaction to derm
