Active spin model for cell assemblies on 1D substrates.

The experimental use of micropatterned quasi-one-dimensional substrates has emerged as a useful experimental tool to study the nature of cell-cell interactions and gain insight on collective behavior of cell colonies. Inspired by these experiments, we propose an active spin model to investigate the emergent properties of the cell assemblies. The lattice gas model incorporates the interplay of self-propulsion, polarity directional switching, intracellular attraction, and contact Inhibition Locomotion (CIL). In the absence of vacancies, which corresponds to a confluent cell packing on the substr

The Development of a Screening Tool for Childcare Professionals to Detect and Refer Infant and Toddler Maltreatment and Trauma: A Tale of Four Countries.

UNLABELLED: Child maltreatment is considered a pressing social question, compromising the present and future mental and physical health of one in four children in Europe. While children younger than three years of age are especially vulnerable, few screening instruments are available for the detection of risk in this age group. The purpose of this research was to develop a screening tool for childcare professionals working in public and private daycare settings to support them in the early identification and referral of infants and toddlers exposed to emotional and physical abuse and neglect b

Revealing brain network dynamics during the emotional state of suspense using TDA.

Suspense is an affective state that is ubiquitous in human life, from art to quotidian events. However, little is known about the behavior of large-scale brain networks during suspenseful experiences. To address this question, we examined the continuous brain responses of participants watching a suspenseful movie, along with reported levels of suspense from an independent set of viewers. We employ sliding window analysis and Pearson correlation to measure functional connectivity states over time. Then, we use Mapper, a topological data analysis tool, to obtain a graphical representation that c

Factors influencing variation in physician adenoma detection rates: a theory-based approach for performance improvement.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Interventions to improve physician adenoma detection rates for colonoscopy have generally not been successful, and there are little data on the factors contributing to variation that may be appropriate targets for intervention. We sought to identify factors that may influence variation in detection rates by using theory-based tools for understanding behavior. METHODS: We separately studied gastroenterologists and endoscopy nurses at 3 Kaiser Permanente Northern California medical centers to identify potentially modifiable factors relevant to physician adenoma detection ra

BRAIN-online: An online cognitive and behavioral screening tool for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are among the most common developmental disorders but are underdiagnosed in part because of the inaccessibility of valid screening tools. The goal of this study was to test the ability of a novel online cognitive and behavioral screening tool to accurately distinguish youth with histories of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) from the comparison group. METHODS: Children were tested at home with an online cognitive and behavioral test battery, Brief Assessment of Individual Neurobehavior-online version (BRAIN-online). Participants included child

Behavioral and physiological pain structures of PIPP-R and parental stress: structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Although most non-acute pain assessment tools are multi-dimensional (behavioral and physiological measures) in their approach, the outputs of such tools are considered unidimensional. This study aimed to explore and determine the behavioral and physiological pain structures of Premature Infant Pain Profile-Revised (PIPP-R) for neonates and its association with parental stress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022-2023 in Isfahan, Iran. We recruited 400 pre-term infants, i.e. with gestational age (GA) of less than 37weeks who were admitted to the NICU of educat

Predictive tools for clinical decision-making and counseling of patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare disease with a highly heterogeneous biologic behavior. Accurate individualized prediction of the behavior of UTUC could help guide personalized clinical decision-making regarding optimal therapy. METHODS: A MEDLINE literature search was performed on UTUC predictive tools. We recorded input variables, prediction form, number of patients used to develop the prediction tools, outcomes being predicted, prediction tool-specific features, predictive accuracy, and whether internal or external validations were performed. Development of the SPUR tool: a profiling instrument for patient treatment behavior.

BACKGROUND: Long-term treatment adherence is a worldwide concern, with nonadherence resulting from a complex interplay of behaviors and health beliefs. Determining an individual's risk of nonadherence and identifying the drivers of that risk are crucial for the development of successful interventions for improving adherence. Here, we describe the development of a new tool assessing a comprehensive set of characteristics predictive of patients' treatment adherence based on the Social, Psychological, Usage and Rational (SPUR) adherence framework. Concepts from existing self-reporting tools of ad

Effects of behavior change techniques in interventions promoting condom use among youth in the Global North.

BACKGROUND: Declines in condom use among the general young population highlight the need for effective interventions to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. With this study, we aim to examine the relationship between Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs, the active components of interventions) and the effects of condom interventions among youth. We quantify the number of BCTs used in the interventions, assess their alignment with underlying behavioral theory, and evaluate coverage of specified Mechanisms of Action (MoA, underlying process through which behavior may be

[Using transient elastography as a screening tool for liver fibrosis in addiction service].

BACKGROUND: Most addictive behaviors are risk factors for chronic hepatitis. The level of liver fibrosis is the main prognostic factor of chronic hepatitis. Transient elastography is a valid and accessible tool for measuring the level of liver fibrosis. Its routine use in addiction service is however poorly documented. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To test the feasibility of a systematic use of transient elastography as a tool for screening and diagnosis of liver fibrosis in patients hospitalized in an addiction medicine ward and to determine the prevalence of hepatic fibrosis, its predictive factors an

Facets of Pantomime.

OBJECTIVES: Exploring the nature of defective pantomime in apraxia. METHODS: Critical review of behavioral associations and dissociations between defective pantomime, imitation of gestures, and real tool use. Analysis of congruencies between crucial lesions for pantomime, imitation, and tool use. RESULTS: There are behavioral double dissociations between pantomime and imitation, and their cerebral substrates show very little overlap. Whereas defective pantomime is bound to temporal and inferior frontal lesions, imitation is mainly affected by parietal lesions. Pantomime usually replicates th

Neural Circuit Mechanisms That Underlie Parental Care.

In mammals, parental care is essential for the survival of the young; therefore, it is vitally important to the propagation of the species. These behaviors, differing between the two sexes, are innate, stereotyped, and are also modified by an individual's reproductive experience. These characteristics suggest that neural mechanisms underlying parental behaviors are genetically hardwired, evolutionarily conserved as well as sexually differentiated and malleable to experiential changes. Classical lesion studies on neural control of parental behaviors, mostly done in rats, date back to the 1950s.

Two-Year Autism Risk Screening and 3-Year Developmental Outcomes in Very Preterm Infants.

IMPORTANCE: Use of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised With Follow-Up, a 2-stage parent-report autism risk screening tool, has been questioned due to reports of poor sensitivity and specificity. How this measure captures developmental delays for very preterm infants may provide support for continued use in pediatric care settings. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether autism risk screening with the 2-stage parent-report autism risk screening tool at age 2 years is associated with behavioral and developmental outcomes at age 3 in very preterm infants. A pilot study of a behavior-change intervention for preventive therapy among women at high risk for invasive breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The use of preventive therapy in women at high risk for invasive breast cancer is associated with a significant reduction in breast cancer risk, however, uptake remains suboptimal outside of clinical trials. We conducted a pilot study of a behavior-change intervention to encourage high-risk women to take preventive therapy. METHODS: Women aged 35–69 with a history of lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) or atypical hyperplasia (AH) receiving care at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, were eligible. Following cognitive testing, the tool was field-tested using a pre-post design,

Behavioral pain scale may not be reliable in awake non-verbal intensive care patients: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of pain in patients, unable of oral communication, often relies on behavioral assessment. However, some critically ill patients, while non-verbal, are awake and have some potential for self-reporting. The objective was to compare the results of a behavioral pain assessment with self-reporting in awake, non-verbal, critically ill patients unable to use low-tech augmentative and alternative communication tools. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of intubated or tracheotomized adult, ventilated patients with a RASS (Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale) of -1 to + 1 and in

Evaluating the Impact of a Dutch Sexual Health Intervention for Adolescents: Think-Aloud and Semistructured Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Engagement with and the potential impact of web-based interventions is often studied by tracking user behavior with web analytics. These metrics do provide insights into how users behave, but not why they behave as such. OBJECTIVE: This paper demonstrates how a mixed methods approach consisting of (1) a theoretical analysis of intended use, (2) a subsequent analysis of actual use, and (3) an exploration of user perceptions can provide insights into engagement with and potential impact of web-based interventions. This paper focuses on the exploration of user perceptions, using the

WalkingPad protocol: a randomized clinical trial of behavioral and motivational intervention added to smartphone-enabled supervised home-based exercise in patients with peripheral arterial disease and intermittent claudication.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise is a first-line treatment for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and intermittent claudication (IC) reducing pain and increasing the distances walked. Home-based exercise therapy (HBET) has the advantage of reaching a higher number of patients and increasing adherence to physical exercise as it is performed in the patient's residential area and does not have the time, cost, and access restrictions of supervised exercise therapy (SET) implemented in a clinical setting. Even so, rates of adherence to physical exercise are relatively low, and therefore, m-health tools

An in-vitro assay using human spermatozoa to detect toxicity of biologically active substances.

Identifying the key toxic players within an in-vivo toxic syndrome is crucial to develop targeted therapies. Here, we established a novel method that characterizes the effect of single substances by means of an ex-vivo incubation set-up. We found that primary human spermatozoa elicit a distinct motile response on a (uremic) toxic milieu. Specifically, this approach describes the influence of a bulk toxic environment (uremia) as well as single substances (uremic toxins) by real-time analyzing motile cellular behavior. We established the human spermatozoa-based toxicity testing (HSTT) for detect
