Clinical applications of mineral trioxide aggregate.

An experimental material, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), has recently been investigated as a potential alternative restorative material to the presently used materials in endodontics. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that MTA prevents microleakage, is biocompatible, and promotes regeneration of the original tissues when it is placed in contact with the dental pulp or periradicular tissues. This article describes the clinical procedures for application of MTA in capping of pulps with reversible pulpitis, apexification, repair of root perforations nonsurgically and surgically,

Management of incompletely developed teeth requiring root canal treatment.

Endodontic management of the permanent immature tooth continues to be a challenge for both clinicians and researchers. Clinical concerns are primarily related to achieving adequate levels of disinfection as 'aggressive' instrumentation is contraindicated and hence there exists a much greater reliance on endodontic irrigants and medicaments. The open apex has also presented obturation difficulties, notably in controlling length. Long-term apexification procedures with calcium hydroxide have proven to be successful in retaining many of these immature infected teeth but due to their thin dentinal

Oral assessment of patients with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets.

BACKGROUND: X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) is a hereditary disorder caused by PHEX sequence variations, leading to excess fibroblast growth factor 23, chronic hypophosphatemia, and impaired mineralization of skeletal and dental tissues. Patients frequently have spontaneous periapical abscesses, taurodontism, periodontal disease, and delayed tooth eruption. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the authors evaluated the oral health of 17 participants aged 4 through 61 years with clinically and genetically confirmed XLH. Standardized clinical examinations and radiographic assessments

Treatment of aggressive external root resorption with calcium hydroxide medicaments: a case report.

Intrusive luxation is an injury involving the axial displacement of a tooth into the alveolar socket. This paper describes apexification using calcium hydroxide medicaments of an immature permanent central incisor in which spontaneous re-eruption as well as severe inflammatory external root resorption was observed following traumatic intrusion. A 10-year-old boy was referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry 3 days after having fallen at school. Intraoral examination revealed intrusive luxation and an enamel-dentin crown fracture of the maxillary left central incisor (Tooth 21). The too

Biomechanical performance of an immature maxillary central incisor after revitalization: a finite element analysis.

AIM: To investigate the stress distribution in an immature maxillary incisor and the same tooth after simulated revitalization with deposition of tubular dentine or cementum by finite element analysis (FEA). METHODOLOGY: A finite element model of a maxillary central incisor was developed on the basis of a µCT scan. The tooth was segmented in two parts: a part that represented a tooth in an immature state and an apical part that represented the tissue formed after revitalization. The apical part was given the mechanical properties of dentine or cementum. The immature tooth and the same tooth r

Pseudo transposition of the mandibular lateral incisor to the first premolar space: A literature review and case series.

Tooth transposition is the positional interchange of two adjacent teeth, which may be incomplete or complete. The root apex may remain in a normal position despite a severely displaced crown. The aim of this paper is to provide a literature review on the incidence, aetiology and treatment options for pseudo-transposed mandibular incisors. A case series is also presented highlighting the various management techniques that have been utilised in treating five cases of pseudo-transposed mandibular lateral incisors.

Cortical bone remodeling/tooth movement ratio during maxillary incisor retraction with tip versus torque movements.

The validity of the postulate "bone traces tooth movement" was examined on 40 Angle Cl II cases. It was hypothesized that a 1:1 cortical bone remodeling/tooth movement ratio is preserved during maxillary incisor retraction. The sample was divided into retraction with tip (13 patients), retraction with torque (18 patients), and control (9 patients) groups. Two time point cephalograms were analyzed with two superimposition techniques, SN at S and a newly developed static tooth analysis, with the maxillary left central incisor serving as a reference object. In both retraction with tip and retract

Complicated crown fracture of an unerupted permanent tooth--a case report.

Trauma to primary teeth may result in direct damage to underlying developing permanent teeth because of the close relationship that exists between the apices of the primary teeth and their permanent successors. Injuries to developing teeth have been classified into ten different categories, using a classification that is largely based on developmental alterations to the permanent teeth. However, this classification does not include other types of trauma that may occur to developing teeth, such as crown fractures. Although apparently rare, such injuries can occur by direct contact of the impact

Timing of human mandibular third molar formation.

BACKGROUND: Population differences in tooth formation using radiographs can be determined if the entire developmental sequence of a single tooth is studied. The only developing tooth visible radiographically from initiation to root completion is the third molar or wisdom tooth. AIM: The timing of mandibular third molar formation was documented for two groups of children in England and two in South Africa. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of White and Bangladeshi children from London and Black African and Cape Coloured children from South Africa were examined (age 5-24). Mean age o

Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis With Sequestrum-Like Bone Formation Mimicking Fungal Sinusitis: A Case Report.

Calcified materials in an opacified maxillary sinus often suggest fungal sinusitis, particularly aspergillosis. However, odontogenic maxillary sinusitis may rarely be associated with a bone-like calcified mass, creating diagnostic difficulty. We report a case of chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis with sequestrum-like bone formation that mimicked fungal sinusitis. An 88-year-old man was referred for mobility and occlusal pain of the maxillary left first molar. He had no nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, headache, facial pain, or history of maxillary sinus surgery. Intraoral examination showed

[Esthetic and prosthetic procedures in single-tooth replacement].

Loss of anterior maxillary teeth always results in bone resorption and loss of interdental papillae, and the resorption makes a single tooth replacement by a dental implant very difficult. When infections have been present and the patient's history shows previous surgery at the apex of the root, bone destruction is substantial, which results in an increased resorption defect, thereby further increasing the aesthetic and prosthetic problems. This paper describes the steps necessary for implant surgery and the prosthetics; a brief summary is provided. The quality and quantity of bone, along with

Histologic Findings of a Human Immature Revascularized/Regenerated Tooth with Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis.

INTRODUCTION: Pulp revascularization/regeneration in immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulp and/or apical periodontitis is an effective approach for inducing root maturation. Previous histologic studies showed cementoid/osteoid tissue and/or periodontal ligament-like tissue formed within the root canals. This case report describes the histologic findings of a human symptomatic irreversible pulpitis immature permanent tooth with most of the pulp removed after a revascularization/regeneration procedure. METHODS: A human immature permanent mandibular premolar (tooth #29) was diagnosed as sy

Pulp and Periodontal Regeneration of an Avulsed Permanent Mature Incisor Using Platelet-rich Plasma after Delayed Replantation: A 12-month Clinical Case Study.

Numerous publications have reported revascularization of necrotic immature permanent teeth, but the regenerative potential of pulp in mature teeth has rarely been considered. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) meets many requirements of a scaffold for regenerative endodontics. To the best of our knowledge, no clinical study has evaluated PRP for endodontic regeneration in a mature avulsed tooth. The present case evaluated PRP for pulpal regeneration in an avulsed mature incisor (>8 hours extraoral dry time) of an 11-year-old boy after delayed replantation. The canal was disinfected after extraoral acc
