Riga-Fede disease: A systematic review and report of two cases.

AIM: The term Riga-Fede disease has been used historically to describe traumatic ulceration that occurs on the ventral surface of tongue, buccal mucosa, gum or floor of the tongue in newborns and infants. It is most often associated with natal and neonatal teeth in newborns. The painful symptoms may be absent or acute, up to the point of preventing the baby from feeding. The aim of this work is to offer a description of the therapeutic solutions for the treatment of this pathological condition, with a review of the literature and the report of two cases. MATERIALS: A systematic review of the

Novel EDAR mutation in tooth agenesis and variable associated features.

Tooth agenesis (TA) is the developmental absence of one or more permanent teeth. We report on 10 members of a Pakistani family afflicted with TA with variable associated features inherited in autosomal dominant fashion with full penetrance. The malformation is bilateral in the majority of cases, and hallmark feature is the absence of lateral and central incisors and canines whereas first and second premolars are involved less often. Affected individuals also have pronounced variable features associated with TA such as diastema between central incisors, overgrown labial frenum, peg-shaped lower

CXCR4 signaling contributes to alveolar bone resorption in Porphyromonas gingivalis-induced periodontitis in mice.

Periodontitis caused by bacterial infection gradually progresses accompanied by periodontal tissue destruction. As a result, teeth lose their supporting structures, and this leads to tooth exfoliation. CXC-chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is known to be expressed in lymphocytes, fibroblasts and osteoclasts in periodontal tissues, suggesting that periodontal CXCR4 signaling contributes to alveolar bone resorption in the milieu of periodontitis. However, the role of CXCR4 signaling in the pathogenesis of periodontitis has remained unknown. We established a mouse model of periodontitis by inoculation

Indirect pulp therapy: an alternative to pulpotomy in primary teeth.

Preservation of the primary teeth until their normal exfoliation is essential for normal oral function and facial growth of the child. To that end, treatment of primary teeth with large carious lesions approximating the pulp should be aimed at preserving the tooth. Currently, the pulpotomy is the most frequently used pulp treatment for cariously involved primary teeth. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the use of an alternative to the pulpotomy, indirect pulp therapy (IPT), for the treatment of vital, primary teeth with carious involvement approaching the pulp. Accurate diagnosis o

An Exploration of Mineral Density, Elemental and Chemical Composition of Primary Teeth in Relation to Cord-Blood Vitamin D, Using Laboratory Analysis Techniques.

Postnatally, severe vitamin D deficiency commonly results in rickets as well as potential defects in tooth mineralization. The effects of milder deficiency on oral health outcomes later in life are still unclear. This study used micro-computed tomography (μCT), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and Raman spectroscopy to investigate mineral density, total density, and elemental composition of enamel and dentine in 63 exfoliated primary incisors from participants with known 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (25-OHD) at birth. No differences in mineralization and chemical composition using μCT and

SHED promote angiogenesis in stem cell-mediated dental pulp regeneration.

Dental pulp, plays an indispensable role in maintaining homeostasis of the tooth. Pulp necrosis always causes tooth nutrition deficiency and abnormal root development, which leads to tooth discoloration, fracture or even loss. Our previous study showed implantation of autologous SHED could regenerate functional dental pulp. However, the detailed mechanism of the implanted SHED participating in dental pulp regeneration remains unknown. In this study, we implanted SHED in a porcine dental pulp regeneration model to evaluate the regenerative effect and identify whether SHED promoted angiogenesis

Axonal Degeneration in Dental Pulp Precedes Human Primary Teeth Exfoliation.

The dental pulp in human primary teeth is densely innervated by a plethora of nerve endings at the coronal pulp-dentin interface. This study analyzed how the physiological root resorption (PRR) process affects dental pulp innervation before exfoliation of primary teeth. Forty-four primary canine teeth, classified into 3 defined PRR stages (early, middle, and advanced) were fixed and demineralized. Longitudinal cryosections of each tooth were stained for immunohistochemical and quantitative analysis of dental pulp nerve fibers and associated components with confocal and electron microscopy. Dur

Mass spectrometry analysis of gingival crevicular fluid in the presence of external root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we used liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to investigate the differences in the composition of gingival crevicular fluid between resorbing deciduous molars and nonresorbing permanent teeth. The main goal was to identify novel biomarkers associated with root resorption. METHODS: Eleven children (4 boys, 7 girls) in the mixed dentition were selected to participate in this split-mouth design study, in which a deciduous second molar with radiographic evidence of root resorption served as the experimental site, and the permanent first molar on the contral

SHED-derived conditioned exosomes enhance the osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs via Wnt and BMP signaling in vitro.

The exosomes from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED-Exos) have exhibited potential therapeutic role in dental and oral disorders. The biological effects of exosomes largely depend on cellular origin and physiological status of donor cell. In the present study, we explored the influence of conditioned exosomes from SHED with osteogenic induction on periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) in vitro. Conditioned SHED-Exos from a 3-day osteogenic supernatant were applied during PDLSCs osteogenic differentiation. We found that conditioned SHED-Exos had no cytotoxicity on PDLSCs viability asses

Development of clinical and radiographic signs associated with dark discolored primary incisors following traumatic injuries: a prospective controlled study.

The purpose was to evaluate late complications of asymptomatic traumatized primary incisors with dark coronal discoloration. The clinical and radiographic signs of 97 teeth of the study group were recorded along a follow-up period that ranged between 12 and 75 months (mean >36 months). Children's age at time of injury ranged between 18 and 72 months (mean 40). The control group consisted of 102 non-discolored maxillary primary central incisors in 51 children older than 54 months with no history of dental trauma. In 50 teeth (52%) the color faded or became yellowish and in 47 (48%) it remained

The prevalence and severity of oral impacts on daily performances in Thai primary school children.

BACKGROUND: Traditional methods of measuring oral health mainly use clinical dental indices and have been complemented by oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) measures. Most OHRQoL studies have been on adults and elderly populations. There are no systematic OHRQoL studies of a population-based sample of children. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence, characteristics and severity of oral impacts in primary school children. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of all 1126 children aged 11-12 years in a municipal area of Suphanburi province, Thailand. An OHRQoL measure, Chi

Dental diagnostic problems of potential genetic significance: the dental practitioner as geneticist in the developmental disabilities clinic.

A high incidence of aberrant dental formation can be anticipated in developmentally disabled children, particularly where the etiologic factors for developmental retardation are presumably of organic origin. The dentist, practicing in the developmental clinic, must frequently determine the developmental significance of such dental variation. In this capacity, his familiarity with the dental features of genetic disease can contribute significantly to more precise diagnosis.

Periodontal status following surgical-orthodontic alignment of impacted central incisors with an open-eruption technique.

Several factors may affect the outcome of the orthodontic/surgical modality for the resolution of impacted central incisors, but particularly the manner in which the impacted tooth is exposed. The present study aimed to evaluate the post-retention clinical appearance and periodontal status of impacted maxillary central incisors which were exposed and aligned with an open-eruption surgical-orthodontic technique. Twelve subjects (four males, eight females), aged 22 years (range 15-38 years), previously treated for a unilateral impacted central incisor (ICI), were examined 10 years (range 3-25 ye

Orthodontic intervention in the early mixed dentition: a prospective, controlled study on the effects of the eruption guidance appliance.

INTRODUCTION: A prospective, controlled cohort study was started in 1998 to investigate the effects of orthodontic treatment in the early mixed dentition with the eruption guidance appliance. METHODS: Occlusal changes were recorded in 167 treated children and 104 controls after they had reached the middle mixed-dentition stage. Treatment began when the first deciduous incisor was exfoliated (T1) and ended when all permanent incisors and first molars were fully erupted (T2). The children's mean ages were 5.1 years (SD 0.5) at T1 and 8.4 years (SD 0.5) at T2. RESULTS: From T1 to T2, overjet in

Use of the passive lower lingual arch in the management of anterior mandibular crowding in the mixed dentition.

Leeway space preservation in the mixed dentition is a well-documented method of space management. In the mandibular arch it may be saved for utilisation in the correction of minor anterior crowding by the placement of a passive lower lingual arch (LLA) during the transition from the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition.

Comparison of mesenchymal-like stem/progenitor cells derived from supernumerary teeth with stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth.

AIMS: Dental tissue has been the focus of attention as an easily accessible postnatal tissue source of high-quality stem cells. Since the first report on the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) from permanent third molar teeth, stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) were identified as a population distinct from DPSCs. In this study, we compared DPSCs from supernumerary teeth and SHED in three age- and sex-matched patients. PATIENTS & METHODS: Dental samples were obtained from the three patients, who were 6 years old and male, with the parental consent of the three donors, and then
